View Full Version : MTV Rocks!?
Simone.

None of this music is rock.
It really irritates me, they've had Vampire Weekend, Plan B & Florence and the Machine on, it's seriously just not rock.
Just thought I'd mention it.

Sonic Youth and other alternative rock bands used to be a bit of a fixture on MTV in the 80's. That would be unthinkable now.

Vh2 used to be the best chan for me. But of course they replaced it with silly stuff like this chan. Even Scuzz and Kerrang have lost their touch.

Scuzz is the worst music channel around D: it's all that awful screaming sh*t, it has a cheap look about it as well. Kerrang is quality though.
It's good when they do the alternative 80's stuff on the odd night, but apart from that it sucks like all music channels suck. YouTube makes music video channels totally redundant.
Kerrang also used to be pretty reliable, but it's turned into the emo/scene channel. All Time Low and their ilk don't belong on rock channels. It's now effectively a pop rock channel.
Scuzz is Kerrang's unwashed cousin.

Lmfao...Kerrang is a load of crap.
It plays the same stuff over and over again...Paramore...Fall Out Boy...All Time Low.
If I hear them stupid Weightless and Misery Business songs again I'll have to nuke them.
Scuzz is certainly not screaming anymore, it has normal metal/hard rock, such as Avenged Sevenfold.
Though it's losing its touch now, playing soft stuff like Lost Prophets and 30STM (I like them, but Scuzz is supposed to be Metal-type stuff)

Nope cant remember lyrics, Ive only heard it the once a while back. The video had a lead singer whos quite a fat guy, and the screen sorts of flips into the really metal parts of the song.
What colour was his skin?
If you mean flips as in a book, try My Curse by Killswitch Engage.
They're in a book which the pages are flicking in, and Howard (their singer) is kinda chubby I guess.

Black and hes fatter than the guy in that video, and in the video it kinda fizzles into the metal parts, like switches into it, I cant remember the name of the band but it wasnt one I had heard of before (maybe not popular). And I dont really know the difference Twi.

Each to their own I guess.
BTW I thought post-hardcore referred to music by bands like Fugazi, who actually emerged from the hardcore punk scene and were quite closely associated with acts like Minor Threat.
nVCMLWtVN5E
The stuff you're referring to (presumably Fall Out Boy or the Lostprophets) sounds nothing like it. Hence the phrase post-grunge, which is really a form of pop.

Fall Out Boy are like pop rock, and Lost Prophets are just plain rock I think.
Post-hardcore is bands like August Burns Red, Asking Alexandria, Emmure, The Devil Wears Prada etc.
Or they're metalcore, idk the difference between metalcore and post-hardcore.

I love when metal fans get anal about subgenres. It's way too subjective. Who gives a toss ... I mean really.
Dark ambient trip hop beats them all.

I wasn't getting "anal" about it...
I simply explained to the person, it's not like I was like "LIEK OMG LOST PROPHETS AREN'T METAL Y00 IDIOT THEY'RE LIEK PROGRESSIVE ALTERNATIVE TRANCE ROCK"
Lostprophets are pop rock too, really, if you want to go into genres like that. Very, very hook centric hard rock songs, clean cut image, lyrics that recycle words like 'hope', 'mountains' and 'heartbreak' ...
... the lot.

I think you may take things a little too seriously.
The world aint out to get ya.
The point being genres can be silly given how subjective they are with something like metal. Metal is metal. Most of it sounds like something else and we really don't need the amount of genres that we do, IMHO.
It's a way for elitists to sound elite. And that's only really fun with electronic music. There's only so many ways you can tune a guitar.

The difference is as big as Rap and Death metal.
I wasn't even talking about metalcore. More making a general statement directed at nobody in particular.
What on earth is 'normal rock'?

Idk, it's just the bands that pop up in my head when I think of rock, for example Foo Fighters.
I suppose. 'Normal rock' to me conjures up images of The Pidgeon Detectives, Scouting For Girls, those ones that done sung 'Chelsea Dagger' and any other 'insert your band here', 3PM festival slotting, personality devoid douchebags.

I'd say they were more Indie, or 'Indie Disco'
I'd say they are more steaming bags of piss. That kind of indie is a bizarre oxymoron. As soon as it becomes indie it stops becoming indie.

My bf's brother is ALWAYS correcting me when I describe music, because I label my music like "pop", "indie", "rock", "electro", "R&B", "soul", "jazz", "blues" etc. & generally don't bother with going into subgenres.

Is it that hard to answer a question?
I can't help it if I rarely listen to Jazz and stuff.
It's got nothing to do with that, really. I don't listen to Opera but I know it's not the same as Dubstep, which I also don't listen to.
I can't really answer the question. It's almost too obvious. I suggest wikipedia. I mean ... Jazz is Jazz and Blues is Blues. And Soul is Soul. They cross paths but don't they all?
Rock, and in turn everything that came from rock, came from the blues FFS. Rock was just really angry, swaggering, teen blues about nicking a Silk Cut off yer mum and stuff.
Is it that hard to answer a question?
I can't help it if I rarely listen to Jazz and stuff.

Jazz is much more instrumental than both blues or soul.
Blues is probably a lot more 'white' than the other two in that its influenced mainstream rock a lot more: Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, etc. It's essentially singing about one's troubles, and comes from the deep south's black community.
Soul...more vocal, Aretha, Otis etc. Think gospel meets blues.
[i'm not saying these are precise definitions but they're what I think separates the 3]
And if you want to learn more about the origins of all those genres I suggest you go here: http://www.thisisbigbrother.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92234

Well both Jazz and Soul evolved out of blues in different ways. Jazz more directly, Soul from rhythm & blues and gospel. But I just find it ironic that you could listen to Miles Davis' back catalogue and probably find more musical diversity than in the entire heavy metal genre.
Miles Davis' Backwash is a great name for a heavy metal band.
