I'll say this much, after a good meal i feel absolutely wonderful!
after a good bit of alcohol, i feel silly for a while and then feel like utter crap for most of the following day.
If I was in that house, I would think a good meal was more important than anything.

They should have spent the whole budget on alcohol. I doubt BB would have let them starve, would prolly be against some sort of health and safety regulation. Plus it would have gave BB an excuse to create extra tasks for them to win food etc.
