Furthermore, he checks train timetables to make sure a reason someone gave him for being late is true.

I'm telling you, I had a friend just like this guy. Same thing.. .. used to record things. Not just calls but using his mobile in his pocket would record conversations.
Same thing too - analyzing them for those 'lies'. Then (like JJ) he'd get himself into mini-wraths trying to reconcile or catch out lies. Because they both have a 'cognitive dissonance' problem (aka definitely not clever) they would become more angry at 'contradictions' (actually their own mind unable to process/reconcile).
Anyways.. yeah its a real bad news thing and its sometimes called 'Schizo-Affective Disorder'.
Basically, its 'schizophrenia lite'. or 'jr' if you wish.

These people are often manageable with meds and therapy and the good news is that sometimes they will phase out of it as they get older and move on with life.
This also reminds me of BB9 Dale who had something like this going on.

Anyways, BB Psych really needs to be keeping an eye on JJ (im sure they are) because the guy is not normal.

It all makes sense of his outbursts at the beginning of the series, he believed everyone had a "game plan" and was lying to him, but he had lost all control over recording and confronting them, therefore he was constantly in a state of almost uncontrollable rage.

Yeah, poor poor jj; beacause he refuses to respect people enough to trust what they say to him might actually be true, they have to constantly walk on eggshells and try and anticipate how he'll react to anything they do or say that he finds in any way odd, or slightly contradicts anything they may have already said or done in order to hold on to his valuable friendship, or in the case of famliy members, keep his horrific mood swings to a managable level.
