View Full Version : Urban Exploration
Is anybody on these forums into urban exploration? (basically breaking into/photographing derlict buildings and the like)
I used to think I was weird as I used to always want to be left alone in buildings to have a root around after everybody was gone.. then I discovered I wasn't alone. There is a perfect hobby for me; but I have not yet indulged myself.. I want to one day though.
I have spent the past couple of years on this site http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/
Some of the images on there are amazing but some are really depressing (for me anyway) the disused hospitals and mental institutions especially.
Anyway, has anybody done this?
Jessica.

Wow that is very interesting.
Hmm.. yeah it is.
Two images I think are very depressing;

This was taken in an asylum, not a maternity hospital or even a childrens home.. makes me very sad for some reason.
This is an asylum too..

Are you interested in looking around normal buildings or ones that are haunted etc?
You should go on Ghost Haunting not that I think any of it is real. Just a TV show that is made to make people think stuff is going on.

Look at the link in my first post to see the types of buildings..
Nah I have no interest in ghost hunting; partially because I'm a bit of a sceptic, and partly because if I was proved wrong, I would probably s**t myself before dying of fright..
My friend is really into photography; we went into an abandoned factory, it's so fascinating, little bit scary as well but it was an experience and a half!

Yeah, I think it would be the good kind of scary, if you know what I mean?
Mind you, I have heard of people falling through rotten floors and staircases etc.. that wouldn't be so good!
I think a hospital woul creep me out.. I would have to do that with a crowd of people. Just thinking of the amount of people that had died there would give me the pure heebie geebies!!

Yvette does those celebrity ghost hauntings. I remember the one with Paul O'Grady. They went into the really old hospital. You saw dead babies and everything. It was really freaky.

Yeah it was; I'd do it again, although I was so nervous in case we got caught haha. Here's one of the pictures he took, it was fascinating! Oh there was an empty lift shaft in the place we were; I kept well away from it!
Oh yeah a hospital would be too scary for me, and an asylum wouldn't be far off that scary either... baaah. Abandoned places are creepy. There is an abandoned caravan park not far from where I live, so scary!

No offense taken Thomas.. lol
It's not a case of looking for suspicious items!
I can't explain the fascination.. I suppose it's the same as a train spotter.. I don't get that at all, but train spotters think trains are fascinating.

Yeah.. I think abandoned places do hold a certain creepy value actually, that and the fact that there are things that are left exactly as they were.. it just fascinates me! hahaha
^^that photo would probably be really dull to some but I find it really exciting!
*realises I am talking out loud and perhaps sound a bit crazy!.. sharp exit*

Yeah, really creepy eh?
I spent nearly a whole day looking at photos of hospitals and asylums and by night time, my usual sunny disposition was replaced by a much darker sadder one.. it was weird. WOn't look at them for that long again!
It fascinates me too; I like to try and picture why objects were left in the places they were left, it's a bit like a warped version of a murder mystery, I totally get you though happyland, you're not crazy!!

You know what I'd love to do??? Go and see the Titanic. Go down in a submarine. That would be unreal.
The thing about abandoned places is that you don't know what to expect. You could find a dead body or anything. Drug needles etc.

On that 28dayslater forum ,there are pics of an old funeral parlour.. really creepy and the other half of the building was obviously used as a shop.. There's still stuff on some of the shelves. Fascinating.

I would love to Thomas, but when I think of it I get claustrphobic and breathless. Do you know how deep the Titanic lies?? Lol.. I've realised I actually don't know but I used to, and remember thinking that the thought of going that far down on a sub would scare the bejesus out of me..

That is because I am intelligent at some stuff.
I would know stuff you don't know and vica versa.
Why have they started building it now if it isn't until 2012?

It's therapeutic for me in a way: to see that we're just a tiny piece of the great power of life on Earth, you know? That eventually we have to succumb to it's force. Plus I think that buildings in general are monstrocities and would much rather see a field or a wood than something created by man.

But what was it about ancient architecture that made them so beautiful? You don't see ugly castles or tombs or whatever. Have we become lazy or just apathetic towards the beauty of nature, creating rotten looking things all the time?

Some beautiful photos on that site Lee. Think they'd mind if we posted some of our favs on here?
I love anything to do with the Titanic Thomas.. but it's a different feeling of sad when I see photos of it. It's not just surrounded by death, but by tragedy too, unlike a hospital, you know?
I'm planning on going to Poland next year and feel whilst there, I should really visit Auschwitz, but I'm not sure if I could! I'd imagine it must be an overwhelmingly sad and poignant place to visit!

Well, they were trespassing, so by that definition they can't claim copyright on the material they gathered from the place, including any photography.
Ok, that was waffle, but it sounded logical enough, right? lol

I think so D: they are very creepy places
did you see the one of the swimming pool where the guy said he didnt stay long because he kept hearing voices :shocked::shocked:
Lol.. no. Show me the link. That would terrify me..and probably put me off to be honest!
If I was to do this, I would have to continually be with 5 or 6 people, definitely holding onto at least two of them and I would neead my head, ears and neck covered! (don't ask why, but for some reason, when I am scared, I automatically want my ears and head covered) hahahaha

I take it people die in asylums too.. You know, if they're suffereing from severe mentalism and spend their whole life institutionalised?
God that's a really sad thought.. makes the morgue pictures even worse!

I'm not sure, sometimes I think it was used for therapy, in Silent Hill: 0rigins we visited an old Sanitarium and there was an iron lung, I seem to remember there being a flashback of one of them going wrong, it was pretty disturbing (not visually, as SH isnt about visible horror, so there was no blood ect.)

http://lisawallerrogers.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/typhoid-mary-in-quarantine.jpg
As we near the end of the winter of the Swine Flu we are reminded of another time in history, before vaccines and antibiotics, when the rapid spread of disease struck fear in the hearts of the population of New York.
In the summer of 1906, New York banker Charles Henry Warren took his family on vacation to Oyster Bay Long Island. He rented a summer home from George Thompson and his wife and looked forward to rest and relaxation in one of the most beautiful vacation spots in America. Being quite well of the family could afford to hire their own private cook for the trip and Warren and his wife hired Mary Mallon a 37 year old Irish domestic who had emigrated to the States when she was about fifteen.
On August 27, one of the Warren's daughters became ill with typhoid fever. Soon, Mrs. Warren and two maids became ill; followed by the gardener and another Warren daughter. In total, six of the eleven people in the house came down with typhoid.
Since the common way typhoid spread was through water or food sources, the owners of the home feared they would not be able to rent the property again without first discovering the source of the outbreak. The Thompsons first hired investigators to find the cause, but they were unsuccessful.
Then the Thompsons hired George Soper, a civil engineer with experience in typhoid fever outbreaks. It was Soper who believed the recently hired cook, Mary Mallon, was the cause. Mallon had left the Warren's approximately three weeks after the outbreak. Soper began to research her employment history for more clues.
Soper was able to trace Mallon's employment history back to 1900. He found that typhoid outbreaks had followed Mallon from job to job. From 1900 to 1907, Soper found that Mallon had worked at seven jobs in which 22 people had become ill, including one young girl who died, with typhoid fever shortly after Mallon had come to work for them.
Marry Mallon in North Brother Hospital Bed
Wikimedia Commons
Convinced that Mary was the source of these typhoid cases he approached her to see if she would co-operate and allow for the analysis of a stool specimen. Insulted and probably frightened, Mary refused to co-operate, twice threatening Soper with a knife. Eventually, New York Public Health Officials had to "capture" Mary and take her, against her will, to Willard Parker Hospital.
Tests at the hospital revealed Mary to be the first healthy carrier of typhoid fever in the United States. Upon discovering this the health department transferred Mallon to an isolated cottage (part of the Riverside Hospital) on North Brother Island (in the East River near the Bronx).
Mary was taken against her will and essentially imprisoned because she was a carrier of a disease that could kill others who came into contact with the food she was preparing. The incident created a myriad of moral and ethical questions for the health care professionals in the city at the time. There was a charter in place allowing for the quarantine of sick people but to imprison someone who was healthy seemed wrong.
In 1909, after having been isolated for two years on North Brother Island, Mallon sued the health department. But the judge in the case ruled in favor of the health officials and Mallon, now popularly known as "Typhoid Mary," "was remanded to the custody of the Board of Health of the City of New York." Mallon went back to the isolated cottage on North Brother Island with little hope of being released.
In February of 1910, a new health commissioner decided that Mallon could go free as long as she agreed never to work as a cook again. Anxious to regain her freedom, Mallon accepted the conditions. On February 19, 1910, Mary Mallon signed an affidavit stating that she "is prepared to change her occupation (that of cook), and will give assurance that she will upon her release take such hygienic precautions as will protect those with whom she comes in contact, from infection." She was let free.
In early 1915, twenty-five people became ill with typhoid at the Sloane maternity hospital. When workers noticed a resemblance of a cook, Mary Brown, to earlier photos of Typhoid Mary, it was found that Mary had taken a job as a cook at the hospital breaking her agreement with the Public Health Department.
Mallon was again sent to North Brother Island to live in the same isolated cottage that she had inhabited during her last confinement. For twenty-three more years, Mary Mallon remained imprisoned on the island. She would remain at North Brother until her death from complications of a stroke in 1938. An autopsy showed she still was still a carrier at the time of her death.

Some of them sound very dangerous, but some of the places are quite breathtaking. It's a shame more cannot be done to renovate them, such as St Pancras Chambers:

I like the fact that the people on the site that "visit" these places respect them and leave them as they find them more or less, so other people can go on enjoying them too, which is more than can be said of some others who have been in some of these places.

Quite near to where I live is Scotland's old Nuclear Shelter (now a crappy tourist attraction). Whenever one of them comes across, it's always their ambition to be photograhed standing next to the signpost and pointing.........I think at least half a dozen have done it now, it's become, an 'I visited Ian' marker to share the pic on a site we use! :joker:

that bb one is epic
thomas they are not meant to be in any of the places thats the whole point about it but if you read the site they never break & enter nor do they go in and trash the place or take anything
my favourite poster on there is downfallen go check his stuff in the high stuff out (he mostly did high stuff cos he also had (i say had cos he died in december in a base jumping accident) a love of base jumping & sky diving) his pictures of london from high up buildings are just wow he even got on the 02 (speaking of which check his picture of the 02 in fog just amazing)
Some of them sound very dangerous, but some of the places are quite breathtaking. It's a shame more cannot be done to renovate them, such as St Pancras Chambers:
http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=26749
I like the fact that the people on the site that "visit" these places respect them and leave them as they find them more or less, so other people can go on enjoying them too, which is more than can be said of some others who have been in some of these places.
They are great photos of St Pancras chambers.. what a beautiful looking place.
I notice too that they were taken by the forum memeber "Downfallen" who Pinkmichk mentions above..
I'm going to go and have a look at some more of his pics.
I looked at all his pics.. Really tragic that he died doing something he loved :(

i found that one to be interesting if a bit dangerous.
i read the whole thread and it ended up in the newspapers and the company that owned the site expressed how concerned they were at the breach in security and they had to hire a steeplejack to retrieve the flag they left up there :)
well the flag had the forums web address on so the steeplejack joined the forum to thank them for earning him £300 he also returned the flag and told them to keep up the good work he he.

i was away last week and we went to a windmill (it was open to public and all so not really a explore) but i took pics in practice for when i go with my friend in sept i'm norm only really taking people pics or cars so was fun to do something different
Funnily enough, I saw a really old abandoned windmill whilst on holiday last week.. I was itching to break in! hahaha

i am planning on joining the forums over at 28DL as i may be able to wangle access to some victorian spa baths that have only seen the light of day to very few people in the last 30 years i was allowed in there as a contractor to do some work a few years ago and was absolutely staggered by what i saw such a beatiful place hidden from view. It will have to wait until i can buy a decent camera but with a bit of ear bending i think i can talk my way back in to get some photos.
Then i will join the forums and make my first contribution :)

Thats a cool site, will have a good look through that. I dont partake in urban exploration, I am clumsy enough just walking down the street i'd probably break my neck in a derelict building  But I have heard of it and have seen it discussed before on Above Top Secret where there quite a few people who do it. Very interesting.

See this sort of thing facinates me.. Who lived in this beautiful little house? When did they die? Why has the house not been touched at all? I don't just mean by vandals, but by anyone. I mean did the people who owned the house not have any family? Who owns this house? I'm glad it's available for the likes of urban exploration, but it is also sad that such a gorgeous house is being left to rot..
I can understand why I fine abandoned hospitals and asylums creepy but why a theme park?? This gives me the shivers for some reason..

I think I could only do a hospital if there was a lot of people with me.. Christ knows how people do things like that alone!!
Good luck with your next explore anyway.. Look forward to more pics :D
Just thought I'd bump this as I've been doing some serios lurking over on the 28dl forum.. some great new pics!

There was this Polish hospital that became a bit of a local activity really - loads of us, through word of mouth, heard about it and how it'd been abandoned (I think because of asbestos...) so naturally we broke in and explored it a couple of times.
The problem was we did it at night every time. And it was all one level - just loads and loads of wings and corridors and it felt like a maze. Naturally, since we were like 18/19 at the time, we'd dick around in them and try to scare each other senseless and it worked... I don't think I have any photos from it, but I remember some friends of mine made a music video in it -tries to find-
_QQuczG397U
probably best if you mute the music
anyway they tore it all down about 2 years ago because of the constant intrusions and it was a health risk :(

oh it was a settlement camp for WW2 Polish people, not a hospital (but had a small hospital, I remember finding a big room with lots of wheelchairs and gurneys)

I've been to Aldwych, a disused Underground station in London. It was quite creepy but great. It was a level in Tomb Raider 3, which is why I wanted to go... although I didn't have to shoot anyone, sadly.
Never done it but enjoy looking through the pics.
We have a thread about this btw I think Lee might have made it, if I find I will merge.
Ooh.. yeah I made a thread about this!
Still never have done it though
Right I found Lee's thread so merged them.

I love stuff like this
Me too.. I can honestly get caught up for days looking at people's photos.. I don't know why, but the asylum/old hospital ones start making me feel really weird after a while.
There's a few beautiful big photographic books in Waterstones just now.. I think ones called "beauty in Decay" I think I might buy me it :)
