Actually....it makes me dislike him more.
It was a big sympathy act....a man of his age would surely take himself off for some personal space and get upset... I found it fake and embarressing.Its not that I dont believe he misses his wife and children....but he was crying out for attention and sympathy by the way he did it.

I'm a big scary-looking 6'2" Scotsman who doesn't show that sort of emotion readily and I know I'd shed tear if I'd been separated from my family for that length of time and got a letter from my daughter who I love more than you can imagine. I felt for Dave last night.
