Geek boy Sammy certainly does seem to have a mental age far below his age as counted in years. I'm certain he is somewhat backwards/retarded. It often seems most apparent in his speech difficulties.

The HMs do seem to have to make allowances for him akin to a Special Needs Child.

I think you have the wrong one - JJ is the one with mental health problems - something people have been pointing out for a long time now! Sam just felt ganged up on and the stress got to him!
