You hear people going on about 'leaks' on this site all the time lol How do they get leaked? Is it corruption in the music industry or what?

Some person somewhere down the line of production will get a copy, then upload it to the internet

Does this kill the music industry?

Ask smithy...he somehow manages to have songs *before* they are leaked...though that makes no sense to me at all

It kills newer acts, but if they're a newer act they probably wont be leaked, where as with big acts like Eminem, their fanbase is big enough for people to buy it even if it has been leaked

What do people gain by leaking the songs though?

Sometimes the record company leaks stuff as a means of promotion though but generally someone gets their hands on it and just uploads it.

What do people gain by leaking the songs though?

Just being first to hear them before they are actually released or first shown.

Nothing, except hearing it before everyone else lol

If you get your hands on an unleaked song it can be used for trading around the net, for other unleaked songs. There's a huge trading scene, and as a result there are many unleaked songs that are circulating all the time and being traded around for more music. Every now and then they end up in the wrong hands and end up leaking.

But how do you get your hands on an unleaked song. Surely if you manage to get it, its leaked :conf:

No because if the song is leaked, then you can no longer use it to get more music. So traders rarely leak their stuff because it means they have less to negotiate with. Plus if they leak a song then they'll get a reputation for leaking and people will refuse to trade with them in future because they'll be afraid that person will leak whatever they get.

a leak = a song that is widely available across the net.

these songs haven't leaked, the only way to get them if to trade around for them so not very many people have them.

- Songs hacked from email accounts. (There are groups out there that hack producers accounts)
- Labels leaking songs to get some buzz for their artist
- Stores get albums before the release date and someone that handles them, leaks the songs.

90% of the time though, It's hackers, who sell the songs then once they've made a profit release them :/
