Don't think there is a thread on this

There have been adverts on C4 for a couple weeks now. I really hope this doesnt spoil the film. The way it ended is one of the best things about, even though I wanted to know what happened to Milky.

On 26 August 2009, Channel 4 said it would fund a four-part television drama, This Is England 1986, to be written by Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne. It will pick up the story of several characters, four years on. Meadows said:

When I finished This Is England, I had a wealth of material and unused ideas that I felt very keen to take further – audiences seemed to really respond to the characters we created and out of my longstanding relationship with Film4 and Channel 4 the idea for a television serial developed. Not only did I want to take the story of the gang broader and deeper, I also saw in the experiences of the young in 1986 many resonances to now – recession, lack of jobs, sense of the world at a turning point. Whereas the film told part of the story, the TV serial will tell the rest.[14]

It will be set when the 1986 World Cup was in Mexico, Chris de Burgh was number one in the music charts and 3.4 million people were unemployed in Britain. As Shaun (still played by Thomas Turgoose) writes his last school exam, he realises he will have to find his way in the world. His friends — including Woody, Lol, Smell, Gadget and Meggie — are still around, looking for love, entertainment and employment.[15] Meadows said that Combo (again played by Stephen Graham) would return, that the fate of Milky would be revealed, and that part of the story would be based on a wedding between Woody and Lol that would be called off. He said if the series succeeded, he would follow it with another series.[16]

On 6 January 2010, Meadows said on his website that the project would be called This is England 86. He said Milky was alive, Combo would return and that Woody has a factory job and is about to marry Lol. The scripts are complete and filming is due to begin at the end of March.[17] He later added that scooters including Vespa and Lambretta will be used in the series - reflecting the Scooterboy movement in the mid-late 80's - and that it is currently scheduled to air in September 2010. This is the first time that he has had a female-lead story, with Lol playing the central role.

Much of the series was filmed around Gleadless Valley area of Sheffield. As of June 5, 2010, filming has now been completed and the series is in post-production. The first official images have been released as well as amusing news about an escaped parrot on set. A special promo video for the series is also available to watch on the official C4 microsite

I'm a bit unsure of this film. This is England was quite iconic, in my opinion, in it's portrayal of racism, and seemed to be making a statement politically

This just looks like a load of lager louts watching football. All the racism and hatred that was embedded in them has vanished, just like that

The trailier during the BB adverts made it look great, but at the same time I really don't want it to turn into a drama that runs and runs, but yeah, it still looks great

I am probably one of the few Americans to see the original film. I loved it. I am very excited for this, I had no clue they were related initially when I saw the adverts because This Is England doesn't seem like the type of film to have a follow up.

It's great they got the entire cast back together for this, it wouldn't have been the same otherwise. I see This is England more like a novel, you can have a follow up to a novel without it being utter crap. '86 isn't being made with intention of major profit, so I think it'll be of value.

It was never ever confirmed so they could do what they wanted if they ever made a sequel. He was beat up, even I thought he was dead, but it was a cliffhanger really, to let people make up their own mind (a bit like italian job but thats an awful comparison lol)

The show is going to be sheer class. Nothing even near the quality of last nights episode has been on TV for years.

Kell, Smell and Lol make me wish I was in my twenties in 1986.

Although it doesnt suprise me that some people are slagging it off, some I think were expecting a laugh a minute comedy type thing and would have gotten bored. Like some were expecting the film to be a comedy after the way it opened and who then ended up scared ****less halfway thru

Channel 4's new Shane Meadows drama, This is England '86, made a promising debut with just over 2.5 million viewers last night, Tuesday 7 September.

This is England '86 revisits the lives of the main characters from Meadows's Bafta-winning film This is England three years later and launched last night on the back of significant critical and promotional buzz.

The first instalment of the four-parter averaged 2.542 million viewers and a 14.6% audience share on Channel 4 from 10pm. A further 310,000 (3.5%) watched an hour later on Channel 4 +1.

Channel 4's new drama also encouraging built on the audience inherited from Ultimate Big Brother, which averaged 2.152 million (9.3%, C4+1 473,000/2.7%) from 9pm.

If the C4+1 figure is included, the launch of This is England '86 bettered the debut episodes of Queer As Folk (2.3 million), Teachers (2.5 million), No Angels (2.6 million) and Shameless (2.6 million). All these came before Channel 4 +1 launched.

The drama was 38% up on the average Channel 4 audience for the slot and drew a 31% share of viewing among 16-34 year olds.

Competition last night came from BBC1's 10pm news bulletin (4.455 million/22.2%), Mercury Prize Live on BBC2 (455,000/2.3%), ITV1/ITV1 HD's News at Ten (1.755 million/8.8%) and Channel 5's CSI: NY repeat (1.311 million/7.4%).

Loadsa people I know judged it on the first 5 minutes, where it was fairly comedic. Didn't stick around to see the plot thicken and it being a bit more serious. It's like an 80's version of Skins but I kind of like that

The actings not blatent either so in the actual film it could of passed as a documentary

Woke up about 2 hours ago and couldn't get back to sleep so decided to watch one episode. Well, 3 episodes later and what amazed me about the series was how it's remained so faithful to the film and yet it's a real depature in another way, seeing as the film was more of a mood piece which concentrated on tone and atmosphere, while this one has really explored the characters of the original piece in far more detail, developing their relationships and changing attitudes as they emerge, as we all do, from our nostalgic, hazy and rebellious youth to the harsh realities of adult life.

There's more emphasis on every single character because the scene has already been beautifully set, allowing Meadow's to breathe real individual life into each and every person we see on screen. There's more important and cutting dialogue in the series, but that doesn't mean that Meadow's has lost his ability to tell so much with the camera: every shot seems to be laced with meaning and beauty. This is a director who is very aware of how much can be said with just the lens.

Beautifully shot, humouress, evocative and hugely affecting, this really shows what can be achieved on the small screen with the right kind of care given to the source material and, of course, a good dose of creativity. The transition from big screen to small screen seemed effortless; like it was just meant to be.

And the story of domestic abuse, and the scars it leaves on family members was so painfully illustrated in last night's episode that I'm not sure if I'd be able to sit through it again. Hopefully Combo will open a can of whoop ass on him but, then again, the way Meadow's refuses to give us a completely easy watch, throwing curveballs and shocks at will, I'd be very surprised if a nice tidy ending is on the cards.

King Gizzard
26-09-2010, 12:08 AM
The fact they kept showing it was the awkward/awful part. We don't need to see it all just that we know its happening. Probably should of just had the sound and not the image.

Oh, there'll defo be a death or two. Trying to think of how I'd write it myself. You know, there's a part of me that thinks Lol -that's her name, right - might end up killing whoever attacks her Dad, just to emphasize the harrowing nature of abuse within the family and how it destroys people.

I haven't paid a massive interest in it, except for the first thing that was one which was like film length.

Then you've had the 1 hour episodes. I don't know what the difference is. Did the rape happen in the film or the 1 hour sequels?

Not sure but I reckon he could be out within 5 years if he behaves himself, which he promised to do.

Tonights episode was brilliant. Presumably Lol told Woody and thats why the 5 of them were sitting around together at the end there? Would have liked to see some of the other stories tied up quickly though - Gadget & Kel, Megy and his son etc.

One thing though, surely Lol could easily claim self-defence, there was evidence that he had tried to rape her and that he had injured her, and then there's the fact that he raped Trev. Would she have still gone to jail?

InOne

Im not sure about the self defence, what was forensics like back then, we cant think of what would happen now....we really need someone who was a cop from the 80's!!

Also the stories you mentioned are all ways for it to comeback :D

I honestly doubt that anything was said about his rape of Trev because Lol swore she wouldn't reveal anything of it, which is odd because surely the evidence of Trev's rape would have helped in Combo's defense? Yeah, so there's a few loose ends that hopefully they can sort out in the next series. And come on, after the quality of this one there's bound to be others, right?

Hmm yeah I'm a bit confused at that part. The fact that it was those 5 - Lol, Milky, Woody, Kel and Trev - sitting together kind of made me think that those were the 5 people who knew about her dad. Although I'm not sure if that was intentional on their part, as in they'd all agreed to meet, because otherwise it would have to be explained why Trev was there and how Milky knew. :conf:

Yeah she is. If thats true then it seems strange that those five were sitting together listening to the radio very solemnly, with Kel crying on Lol's shoulder, while everyone else was getting pissed down the pub. Seemed to make me think that she'd disclosed her secret to all of them but maybe not.
