OK, I've been writing this for two days, and it's meant to be in small bits. I'll post what I have done so far in one big post here:
Part 1
Laura sat up. And then she screamed. And she didn't stop.
Ryan's eyes flickered open, and in his drowsy state, he detected screaming. He dragged himself to his feet, trying to locate the source of the yelling. He called out "Who's there?" But nobody answered him. Of course they didn't. There was only screaming. But then there was silence. And now the panic rose in him.
Laura darted forwards, and wiped the tears from her eyes. She scrambled over the tarmac, and tripped on a crack. She fell into the bushes next to her. She sat there, breathing heavily, and finally stopped screaming. She took in her surroundings. She was in, what appeared to be, a maze. She scrutinised the ground. There was no mistaking it. It was definitely a maze. Why was she here?
Ryan could tell immediately he was in a maze. But why? He closed his eyes, and felt himself being pulled back in time...
..."Mom, I'm gonna go meet Jade, alright?"
"Whatever, I'm going out with Vince. Get yourself something to eat."
"Glad you care, Mom."
"Don't sass me, child!"
"Whatever."
...Ryan heard a distinct crunching noise. Somebody was in the next row of hedges. Was it the screamer? Or was it something else...
Part 2
Ryan's heart hammered in his mouth. He lurched forwards and turned round the corner, and...
"Dead end?!" Ryan gasped in disbelief.
"Who's there?" A female voice called out, sounding like a hunted animal.
"I'm Ryan... Were you screaming?" He asked to the disembodied voice.
"No. Ryan, where are we?"
"In a maze. Duh." He groaned, almost finding the situation funny. He had probably gotten drunk and entered this maze, got lost and passed out. Yeah, that explained it. He got drunk all the time. Even though he wasn't supposed to. He was only 15. But he didn't really seem 15. It wasn't that he looked older, he was just mature.
"Yes, and how do we get out?" The voice called out impatiently, calmer now.
"We find the exit, fool." Ryan retorted.
"Well, expert, tell me, if you're so good in mazes, how come you can't see me?"
"Because there's a hedge in the way." Ryan said in a flatline sort of way.
"No, there isn't." The girl said, sounding puzzled.
"But you just asked how come I couldn't see you?"
"Well you've not said come here or walked towards me..." The girl called out, frowning.
"What are you saying?!" Ryan called out, his voice raised.
But she didn't get the chance to reply, the floor rumbled, and Ryan was sent sprawling. He called out.
"Are you alright..?" Ryan began, and then realised he didn't know the girl's name. But there was no reply. She was gone.
But where?
Part 3
Laura struggled to pull herself from the bushes. She finally stood, and decided to turn left. She followed the path for a while, when there was a rumbling noise. She was sent flying, into another bush, and she swore under her breath. What had happened? She heard two voices, male, whispering to each other.
"Who's there?" She asked, scared.
"Nathan." One voice replied.
"Karl." The other followed.
"Um, hi..." Laura tried to be courteous but was too bashful. They were probably enjoying a stroll round the maze. Yeah, that made sense.
"So, who're you?" The one that sounded like Karl asked her.
"Laura. How old are you guys?"
"I'm 17."
"I'm 19."
"Who's 17? Is that Nathan or Karl?"
"Nathan is 17."
"Who said that? Nathan?"
"No, this is Karl."
"Karl, are you lying to me?"
"Why would I lie to someone who's first name I only know and I've never seen?"
Laura laughed at that.
Nathan or Karl laughed with her. The other man remained silent.
"Hey, will you guys stay there? Could you keep talking quite loudly, so that I can follow the sounds of your voices. That way we can stick together."
"Sure thing Laura. That way we can lead a potential psychopath to us in a place where no-one can find us."
"What?" Laura asked, in a puzzled voice.
"Never mind. Get going, I'm finding this creepy."
"What about Nathan?"
"I just told you, I find this creepy."
And with that Laura got going...
Part 4
Ryan called out for the mystery girl. Who was she? No reply. He cursed to himself, and started walking. A chilly wind was blowing, kicking up the leaves. It was then that Ryan heard the crunch. The scraping noise that only metal against metal can make. And he looked up. He screamed, and he started running.
Charlotte Wells was what you might call a "smart blonde." She seemed to have a way about her that nobody would dare mess with. She wasn't exactly destined for brilliant things, but she was definitely going to be up there. So it came as a shock when she woke up inside a maze. She immediately felt a sense of panic, and stood up. She tiptoed forwards, peeked round the corner, and heard the metallic crunch. She looked up and didn't see anything. Whatever it was happened some distance away. Little did she know, but she was the final person to wake up and enter the maze. Charlotte kept walking down the narrow aisle of hedges, and heard a rustling. She snapped her head round to the right, and calculated that the rustling was about 2 hedge rows away. She darted round to the right. Now it was only 1. She came to the end of the hedge row, turned left and... It was a dead end...
Part 5
Nathan and Karl kept talking loudly. They heard a movement, and immediately sighed in relief. Here was Laura. Or not.
A brunette woman walked round.
"Laura!" Nathan reached out for a hug. The woman grabbed his arm, twisted it round behind his back and held a knife to his throat.
"See Nathan! I told you! She was a psycho!" Karl laughed nervously.
The brunette woman remained silent.
"You. Who are you?" She asked Karl.
"Karl, don't you remember, Laura?"
"I'm not Laura. Whoever Laura is, I'm definitely not her. Why are you looking for Laura? Is she a relative?"
"No, she was in the hedge next to us." Nathan finally spoke.
The brunette woman looked at Karl's pleading expression, and let Nathan go.
"Why are we here?" She demanded of them.
"I don't know!" They said in unison.
"Are you related?" She asked them, suspiciously.
"Yes, we're brothers." Nathan answered.
"Alright then. How do we get out of here?"
"I don't know!" Karl exclaimed.
"Then you're of no use to me." The brunette woman sighed, and with that, grabbed their heads, knocked them together, and left.
Nathan and Karl were out for the count.
Laura panicked. Why had Nathan and Karl stopped talking? Where were they?
Now Laura was lost and by herself. It was then, that she heard it. The metallic crunching. And Laura looked up, screamed, and started running...
Part 6
Charlotte tried to scramble over the hedge, and ended up falling through it. She looked up and was staring into the sky. So what was here? She trembled, and pulled herself to her feet, eyes tightly shut. She opened her eyes, and was staring into nothing. It was simply another path. But she had definitely heard something.
"Who's there?" She asked uncertainly.
A rasping noise could be heard, just metres away from her. She spun round, and all she saw was a dark shape lunge at her...
Ryan kept running as fast as he could. He gasped for air, and stopped, panting. He turned around, and knew that he had escaped. He turned the corner, and saw a girl, wrestling with something. She was gasping for air. Ryan ran across, and to his surprise saw she was wrestling with nothing. She was rolling about gasping. He grabbed her, and pulled her up. She turned to look at him, and started to throttle him.
"WHO ARE YOU?!" Charlotte screamed at the dark shape.
"Easy! Help!! HELP!" The shape shouted.
It was then that Charlotte realised that this might not be the dark shape. She quickly detached herself from him.
"I'm sorry! I thought you were.. who are you?"
"I'm Ryan." Ryan confirmed that he wasn't the 'thing'. But what was the thing? And why could Charlotte see it but he couldn't?
He didn't know yet, but he was about to find out...
Part 7
Karl was the first to regain consciousness. He stirred, and pulled himself up, mouth gaping open.
"Wuuhh?" He uttered, incoherently. His brother, Nathan, showed no signs of moving in a while.
Karl heard a voice behind him. He couldn't even be sure if he'd heard it. He spun round, and saw a dark shadow pass behind the hedge next to him. He turned, and fled.
Laura ducked and covered her eyes. The thing had gone. She let out a sigh of relief, and stood up. She was immediately sent back down again, by a woman with dark hair. Brunette. Laura squealed as the woman grabbed her hair, and held a knife to her throat.
"So you must be Laura?" The brunette woman snarled.
"How do you know my name?!" Laura quivered as the woman dragged her back further into the shadows.
"I met your friends, Nathan and Karl."
Laura closed her eyes, and started praying. This woman was going to kill her.
"Are they your friends? Or were they lying to me?"
"I..I talked to them.. over the hedge!" Laura added, trying to please the woman.
"Why are we here?" The woman demanded of her.
"How the hell should I know?!" Laura shouted at the woman whom she only recognised by her hair colour.
"Because you were the first to wake. You were screaming, were you not?" Brunette asked her.
"I was screaming. Yes."
"So, you've been in here the longest."
"Well if you knew I was screaming, doesn't that mean you were here the longe-"
Brunette took her knife away.
Brunette then kicked Laura forward, hit her in the temple with the knife's handle, and rendered Laura unconscious.
But why?
Part 8
Nathan woke, and found himself alone. Where was Karl? Had the woman taken him? He began to fear the darkness. She had taken his older brother away from him, and now he was by himself. His breathing became more erratic. Then he heard the footsteps. At least two pairs of them. He snuck round the corner, and the footsteps got closer. He was hyperventilating. He was going to die. He had to run.. escape..
"KARL!" He screamed out, crying now. A grown man, crying. He slumped to the ground, feeling giddy.
The footsteps stopped. Then came in front of him.
"Jesus, Mary and Joseph!" A female voice gasped.
The male ducked down, and put Nathan onto his side, and calmed him down.
"Charli, you gotta help me here. We need to get him breathing properly. We just triggered heart palpatations."
"Ryan, nobody else is here. He's going to die."
"DON'T SAY THAT! YOU'LL CAUSE HIM TO PANIC!"
"WELL SHOUTING AIN'T GONNA HELP EITHER!"
"LOOK WHO'S TALKING!"
"I need Karl!" Nathan managed to tell them, and then... flatline.
Charlotte and Ryan looked gravely at each other. Ryan began CPR...
