it gets moths quite badly. there's the occasional daddy-long-legs. sometimes even a snail will manage to find its way in.

however, this is unacceptable. (do not click if you dislike spiders)

it doesn't seem that big. but I saw it crawling across my ceiling with all my lights off. and compare it to the size of my poster :(

Does it play with the model aeroplanes hanging from your ceiling?

Ooooh that one (I just googled) - our series never finished :( we were in there with this girl called Summer who kept threatening to kill herself. Was quite amusing, really. Are any of the old regulars on there? (Sophie, Sam, err...hmm. Those are the two I remember most)

There are two Sams, if you mean Funky Sam which is Sam! on TiBB then he still uses it and if you mean the other Sam then I speak to him all the time and he is very active on there. :D

Edit: Sophie won FSB09 but doesn't come on much any more.

Jesus!! I had one like that living in my living room last summer for a few nights.. it eventually met an untimely death! (thanks to my brother in law) Bloody 10 o clock every night it would appear and I would have to seal up the living room like a crime scene and go to bed early!!
Have you caught it yet SHaun?? I tell you one thinh, I would NEVER be able to sleep if I thought that was in my room.
I'm verging on snailaphobia too! How the eff do snails get in your room! Horrible little feckers!

And I'm not sure about the snails - must be through the windows.

Moths, daddy long legs and spiders are nothing to worry about Shauny. Man up!

That plastering job on your ceiling though.... old school baby. Rarely see them like that. Do you live in a fairly old house or what's the story there?

Is it plastering or wallpaper pasted to the ceiling?

Probably a harmless giant house spider. I'm glad I used wikipedia when I spotted one in my house. I had a bad feeling it might be something nasty like a brown recluse or huntsman. You don't want one of them in your room.

Have no idea. You could be right with the wallpaper though.

Yeah, it's pretty slick in some ways. Love old houses with a bit of character.

You big baby! Without spiders you'd have nasty flies all over the shop. Spiders rule.

I actually don't mind house spiders. Huntsmen can ****** off. Their bites can make your flesh turn colours you never thought possible, plus they don't even make webs which makes them freeloaders. :nono:

They're rare in the UK though so...

That is very true, but one that size is just too much. And the speed of the things!

You're perfectly safe you know shaun, there arent many man eating spiders in the world.

Spider bites are very rare too, interesting poison though, generally two proteins that are poisonous - neurotoxins, and one that is a necrotising agent which breaks down the tissues.

More people die worldwide from Bee and wasp stings than from spider bites.

WTF do you mean RARE??! You mean they do exist here?

I also had to do some t'internet research last year when I had my giant spider problem and came to the conclusion it was a giant house spider but now I'm thinking it could have been deadly! yikes!

None of them are native to the UK as far as I know, but some can get here via banana shipments. Not sure how long they would survive in the Scottish weather. :p

It probably wouldn't bother me if I didn't have a blatant phobia of spiders. Australians learn to live with those terrifying funnel web spiders.

Well they don't harm people at all. And I do get scared of big ones, but I still love them, maybe I should get a pet tarantula instead of a kitten :D

and no! get a kitten!!!!

Most species of spider have two fangs through which they inject venom. Most are non aggressive, they bite in self defence. They will rear up like the photograph (post #33) when threatened and bite only as a last resort.

Kittens will scratch and bite freely. Scratches and bites from kittens are prone to infection.

Tarantula bites are more or less harmless as far as I know. Infections aside.

Pretty much like a bee sting, generally they wont inject venom in a self defence strike. But if they do it stings like a bitch. Very little chance of infection.

Other types of spiders have higher level of necrotysing agents in their venom, so can cause ulceration, which needs debridement( all the dead tissue in the ulcer removing) Brown recluse, huntsman etc.

Again it depends on how much of their venom their inject.

Don't remind me. Have you seen the slideshow on YouTube of a guy's hand, with the wound from a brown recluse bite worsening each day? One of the most gross things I've ever seen. Everybody in the comments told him to stop taking pictures of his hand and get to a hospital. :joker:
