The emotionally-charged row echoed the race storms that erupted during two previous BB shows.
In 2007, there were calls for the programme to be scrapped after Indian actress Shilpa Shetty, 35, was verbally assaulted by the late Jade Goody.
And BB8 also hit the headlines when posh totty Emily Parr, 21, was sensationally kicked out of the house after using the word “n***er” in a conversation with Charley Uchea, 25.
The latest race explosion happened when Michelle was talking to Victor, 29, gay Brian and “Nasty” Nick Bateman, 42.
Michelle, 29, looked them up and down and said: “It’s blacks and all sorts night tonight.”
As an uneasy silence settled over the house, Brian, 32, tried to make a joke and said: “It’s gays, blacks, villains and divas night.”
Not one of Michelle’s rival housemates complained about either her or Brian’s comments, but BB bosses dragged her in for a telling-off.
Michelle stormed out of the diary room and complained to Brian: “I didn’t say any abusive words. I used the correct terminology and I only said it because you said it and Victor said it.”
Brian replied: “Oh my God, that was just us being silly. We were just joking.
“Michelle, you’ve got nothing to worry about. I wasn’t offended by it because I said it, too. I don’t think it’s that bad.”
Brian was later called into the diary room and warned about his language.
The row led to a debate in the house. Ulrika Jonsson, 43, said: “They want to cover their arses. They can’t have anything upsetting the last series.”
A BB spokesman said: “Brian and Michelle were reminded about the rules regarding unacceptable language.”

Before everyone gets on their high horse about what the world is coming too, please remember that black people themselves don't find being called 'black' offensive. This is what BIG BROTHER perceived to be offensive not what the black population does.
How is saying black offensive???
Livia
03-09-2010, 01:05 PM
What colour should she have used when referring to black people, exactly? Are we still allowed to refer to white people as white?
Niamh.

I think most people understand that, they've gone over the top PC and it all goes back to the Shilpa incident imo
“It’s blacks and all sorts night tonight.”
that is infact racist.
What was the context of it?
What was Michelle referring to? What's blacks and allsorts tonight?
Livia
03-09-2010, 01:08 PM
I think we should wait and see if it was actually said, in what context it was said, and if any of the black housemates were insulted. Or we could all just get hysterical about it. You decide.
flamingGalah!
03-09-2010, 01:10 PM
I'd say refering to all the other housemates as "all sorts" was more offensive than refering to Victor as black...

Exactly. Ulrika said it best when she said: 'They are covering their arses' that is exactly what it is. I am glad most people understand the difference between someone being overly PC and the wishes of the black population! To say 'Oh you can't say 'black' now' implies that that black people have given instructions for the word to be banned :wavey:

I didn't hear the actual conversation but i heard michelle and Brian talking about it and Brian then being called to the diary room about it

she's referring to blacks as being of lower social standing as whoever else is usually allowed in the club.
I didn't hear the actual conversation but i heard michelle and Brian talking about it and Brian then being called to the diary room about it
So did I.
But you wouldn't have a clue what it was about.

Thats rubbish and you know it. If she said anything racist, she would have been booted right out there and then.

No she wasn't. She's Victor's and Makosi's bf. Wait to see the context.

She did seem like she had just been told off over something and that Brian had too. She said something about not being racist as well so it would tie in with the story

yep ... if you lump them in with the phrase "all sorts". Like they are freakish or something.
Looking at what was said, she was including herself in the alsorts.
From what was said between Michelle and Brian, she was only paraphrasing and repeating him.

I don't see it as negative. It takes all sorts to make a world, isn't that the old adage? People are too sensitive. When you think about the crap that's going on in the world, to make a massive thing out of this is madness. I could understand if it was meant maliciously, but as much as I'm not a Michelle fan, I don't think she meant it like that.
You have to ask why it was leaked. You couldn't make the jist of it on LF.

I agree and disagree with you on that one, generally speaking when someone uses the phrase "insert word here" and all sorts it usually is negative and implying that "insert word here" is rif raf, having said that I would seriously doubt Michelle was being malicious just having a joke.

Yeah, I get you. So I demand we bloody reclaim the phrase. This forum is made up of all sorts, and actually, I think we'd all agree that's a positive thing. How boring if we were all alike.
Thats the point. It is not that she said "black". It is that blacks was put in the same context as all sorts.

I kinda agree with this. It's not the usage of the word "black", obviously that isnt racist, but I suppose it's the way she classed black people as being part of "all sorts" which could have derogatory connatations if you ask me.

BB are desperate to rekindle the media storm Jade caused. Anything to grab the headlines. Mercenary shower!
Yeah, probably. Although out of that whole Jade affair came something positive, I think. I'm not sure Shilpa would have won if the Great British Public hadn't decided that what had been levelled at her was appalling and unfair, and they voted for Shilpa as a consequence. Although there are plenty of bigots around, I'm happy to say that I think decent people outnumber them greatly.

Do you really think Michelle meant it like that? Really?
I assume they (Brian, Victor, and Michelle) were describing the composition of the house - black, gay, transgender, loopy-loos etc., and it got truncated to blacks and all-sorts.

It all comes down to context and intent.
I don't believe for a second she intended any offense. I suspect it was said in a jokey context too. Another fuss about nothing it seems....
The Jade incident wrt poppadums was only a part of a series of racial abuse. There was the mimicing and the thing about chicken, and there were 2 others at it as well as Jade.

She was trying to imply that there's something stereotypical about all Indians, branding her a "poppadom" is pretty racist and demeaning if you ask me, and was clearly intended as such with her trying to isolate and distinguish Shilpa from herself because of her heritage

In an episode of Cheers once I remember them refer to an English man as fish and chips. I dont think the poppadom remark was any different than that really. Its just a flippant culture reference that quickly identifies where theyre from.
Of course, context is everything.
So YOU know what Jade was thinking ? how arrogant ,and PLEASE find me a race who are from Poppadom ? and while your at it find me a religion that is POPPADOM ,a link would be handy ,awaiting your reply with baited breath
Huh? Obviously "poppadom" is not a religion or a race, but she was using it as a derogatory term against Indians, using something stereotypical of her country to mock her, and using it to distinguish herself from Shilpa purely because of their different cultures.

In an episode of Cheers once I remember them refer to an English man as fish and chips. I dont think the poppadom remark was any different than that really. Its just a flippant culture reference that quickly identifies where theyre from.
Of course, context is everything.
It not even about culture ,a poppadom is a food stuff ,end of .........

Huh? Obviously "poppadom" is not a religion or a race, but she was using it as a derogatory term against Indians, using something stereotypical of her country to mock her, and using it to distinguish herself from Shilpa purely because of their different cultures.
So you know why she was saying it now ? get a grip ffs :rolleyes:
chill you silly people,it's just the sentence that comes across as derogatory. I'm sure michelle was suitably embarrassed about it. which is punishment enough.

Yes, I think it's pretty obvious. If she seriously didnt know her surname and was genuinely guessing she would have used a genuine Indian surname; "Patel" or something like that (although that could still be considered offensive), she wouldn't say "Shilpa Poppadom" or "Shilpa ****awalla", where she is clearly mocking her and trying to be offensive.
And you say you wanted to know what she said that was racist, how about "go back to the slums"? You gonnas defend that eh Chuff?
She should have been utterly ashamed the way she treated Shilpa, and if you can just shrug off and defend her racism, then you should get a grip.

If its not direct and literal you really struggle dont you? wiki says :
Papadum, also known as papad in North India, is a thin, crispy Indian preparation sometimes described as a cracker or flatbread. It is typically served as an accompaniment to a meal in India. It is also eaten as an appetizer or a snack and can be eaten with various toppings such as chopped onions, chutney or other dips and condiments.
In certain parts of India, raw papadums (dried but unroasted) are used in curries and vegetable preparations. Papadums are made in different sizes. Smaller ones can be eaten like a snack chip and the larger ones can be used to make wraps.

Yeah, I think she could easily have been able to use her real name, she did so during her interview. I dont think she was as bad as Jade or Jack (who also got away relatively unscathed) but calling her "The Indian" all the time must have been pretty demeaning for Shilpa

I think malicious is too strong a word. I think they were just being bitchy schoolgirls and grasping at the simplest things that made her different. Like inarticulate people always do. I'd say they were moderately racist but not to extent it was portrayed in the media.

No she probably wouldn't have won then but she didn't ask for them to treat her like that so It's hardly her fault that she won under those circumstances, she had no clue what was going on outside. Plus she was nothing but graceful when asked about it afterwards. I remember watching and feeling so angry at the way she was being treated in there and it was horrible to watch. Did the media go too far after? probably, was that Shilpas fault? absolutely not. Does that change what actually happened in there and make it ok? No.

Yeah, I felt really sorry for her because she simply did not deserve the abuse she was getting. I know the word "bully" is thrown around a lot on BB these days, but thats exactly what those three were.
It's worth mentioning Chuff, that it wasnt simply an isolated case of calling her popadom, it was persistent bullying, and I do think Danielle was possibly the worst, I remember her calling her a "dog" and telling her to "f off home" at one point. Disgraceful.
