View Full Version : Why are vampires so popular at the moment?

I've kinda been fascinated by vampires in stories, TV and movies since I was a kid. Not obsessively so, but I appreciated the odd entertainment and understood the mythology, fear and sexual connotations of them. From Nosferatu to the 1930s Bela Lugosi film to Hammer horror and even the lesbian vampire films of the 1970s, vampires have been a recurring feature in horror movies and TV shows with the 1990s seeming like the last peak in my memory with Buffy (movie and TV show), Angel, Bram Stoker's Dracula (Coppola), Dracula: Dead and Loving It, From Dusk Til Dawn, Blade etc.

Then vampires appeared sporadically in Van Helsing, Supernatural, Underworld, Night Watch.

So why in the last few years have vampires become increasingly popular again? And why do they appear to be aimed more at teenagers or women atm? I've never read the Twilight books nor seen the movies. I don't watch either True Blood or The Vampire Diaries. I haven't yet watched the Lost Boys sequel, Lost Boys: The Tribe, but am aware the third film is released this year. And even my beloved Nip/Tuck had an episode involving a vampire fettish.

So what is the big deal with vampires in film and TV atm? Is it at its peak or will it twindle once the Twilight movies are over? What exactly am I missing from vampire orientated media in the late 2000s/early 2010?

See that looks dark, sadistic and gothic! That's the sort of vampire image I'm used to. Whereas Robert Pattinson doesn't seem to evoke fear or lust, just school girl crushes

Hope that vampire $hit is over soon, bores me to death, especially the unbearable Twilight hype

My first thoughts would be that it's a phase we're going through, but then if I take into account how long vampire stories have dominated the entertainment world, I can hardly say it's a phase.

Maybe watching some True Blood or Vampire Diaries, might give you some indication as to why they are so popular with the general public.

Saw a Vampire film advertised at the cinema as well. About a girl who is like 12 who is one. Don't think it's aimed at teens that much though, looks kinda gorey

There was a mini vampire phase when I was younger too, it'll die down in a bit and then the next generation will think that they discovered vampires etc etc.

Showing older style vampires - that can not move fast
and new vampires that move super fast.

Preview was on Lorraine ITV1 show.

Vampires are sexy and dangerous, I think that is why they are popular.

I think that might be the remake of Let The Right One In, it stars Hit Girl from Kick Ass.

It's a remake of a film called 'Let the Right One In' great film, I'd recommend it. The remake.....I don't know it looks a bit iffy but who knows it might not be awful.

The recent boom of Vampire films/TV series ETC is largely down to Twilight but Vampires are always quite a popular subject in entertainment regardless. After Twilight wraps up it might not be as omnipresent but I imagine series like True Blood and Vampire Diaries will keep the train moving.

It seems like there's always a vampire film, TV series or book series out there but after Buffy and Angel ended it was less so. And now they're everywhere again so much so there's a vampire spoof movie coming out titled 'Vampires Suck'.

I'm tempted to give either show a go but am apprehensive as to whether they're actually good or just part of a hype like Lost or Heroes were or Glee currently is.

Yeah but why are they popular again atm lol? Are the vampires in Twilight, True Blood and Vampire Diaries a different kind of 'sexy' to the ones in Buffy or The Lost Boys? More watered down? Less menacing?

I find people who like like their dead and tormented strangely attractive

Lol, fair enough. Vampires are supposed to be dark, dangerous and seductive rather than floppy haired Robert Pattinsons

It's the perfect vehicle for teen angst, that's why, and I fecking hate it, especially when it's diluted to the extent where it becomes just a terribly transparent medium for teeny boppers to swoon with.

Let's get back to what vampires were all about: sex, power, blood and conquest. Nothing about romance crap.
