A South Korean couple who were addicted to the internet let their three-month-old baby starve to death while raising a virtual daughter online, police said.

The pair fed their own premature baby just once a day in between 12-hour stretches at an internet cafe, the official Yonhap news agency reported.

Police officer Chung Jin-won told Yonhap they "lost their will to live a normal life" after losing their jobs.

He said they "indulged themselves online" to escape from reality.

The 41-year-old father and his 25-year-old wife were arrested in the city of Suweon, south of Seoul, earlier this week, five months after they reported the death of their baby.

An autopsy showed her death was caused by a long period of malnutrition.

The couple had become obsessed with nurturing a virtual girl called Anima in the popular role-playing game Prius Online, police said on Friday.

The game enables players to interact with Anima and as they do so, help her to recover her lost memory and develop emotions.

This is quite an old story, but I got sent it through facebook today :S

Is the internet too addictive for some? So addictive that they would actually neglect their own children? Or is it just an excuse?

There was a story a few weeks ago about a woman who got addicted to an online game and let her dogs die and made her children live off cold beans out of the tin for about a month.

I think her kids got put into care and she's banned from the internet and keeping pets.

I'll try and find the story/

EDIT: Here it is

I didnt realise it was so common. I mean...what people would prefer to be on the internet rather than looking after their kids/pets. I know I am online a lot now, but I dont have kids or a pet. And its a bit different :S

If I did i would make damn sure that they got the majority of my attention, if not my full attention. I dont understand people like this. Its sick :(

Yeah, I remember reading about that, it's scary how obsessed people get with those games. I read about a year back about a couple who got married after meeting each other in a game called "Second Life" and the woman was looking for a divorce because she caught her husband cheating on her... in the game!

This story almost beats the one about the woman in America who locked her five small children aged 7 and under, in a cupboard 6ft x 18" deep for 10 hours and jammed a bed against the door while she went out with a friend. When she got back two of the kids were dead. Needless to say, the remaining three have been taken into care. It's quite scary how many terrible parents there are out there.

Oh, do you know what it's called? Sounds like a film I'd watch.

O/T, it's disgusting what people are capable of. Seriously, how could you do that to your own child?

Most who play these games are people who've messed up their real life.
