Was having this debate with a freind of mine 2dai and just wanted to know what you guys thought.
IMO Prime Keane is the better player although Stevie G is a great player he did not have that aura around him that a Prime Keane had. I will always remember Keane for that chap league semi final vs Juventes where he destroyed Zidane and got United through to the final.
Also he is the hardest footballer i have ever seen

I really like them both, Roy Keane may have the edge for me,I love his no nonsense determination and no whingeing either.Brilliant player.
I have massive regard for Steven Gerrard too as a Captain though.

Gerrard.
Less dirty.
Just as committed.
Shows as much heart.
But has more flair and more natural talent.
Amazing player as much as i dont like saying it..
Going forward, Gerrard slightly, defending Keane by a mile. Overall Keane by far.

Gerrard.
Would have hated having Keane play for the team I supported.
Keane should have been done for GBH for that foul on Alfie Haaland.

As Nate says they're different kind of players. Keane is the complete box to box midfielder where as Gerrard is best suited playing in an attacking midfield player.

True, but I'd still have Keane on my team ahead of Gerrard. In his prime there was nobody who could equal him in the middle. Sure he kept Gerrard quiet anytime United played Liverpool.

I've said this every single time it's been brought up - that tackle didn't finish the guys career.

I'd rather have Keane too.

He didn't hit his standing leg. Yeah, it was nasty, but nah, didn't end his career. People use it too often to highlight Keane's ferocity, but sure there's a fair few other players who have taken the law into their own hands on occasion. It's terrible, but it happens.

Yes thats true, but the way he went about it was just pathetic and immature he went into that game with the mentality im going to injure this player..
Its pretty bad.

I'm no condoning it here, just think that he was out for so long after a particular tackle and the fact that this guy told him to get up and stop play acting got him so angry that he had his number from that day on. Silly, but if Keane lost that competitive and fighting spirit he wouldn't have been the player he became.

Yes its all well and good giving him a hard time going in on rough tackles tc rough him up a bit because he pissed you off fair play well done.
But you dont go into a match with the mentality im going to go and injure this guy, then directly target his knee with your studs.. thats just wrong.

He wanted to hurt him, that's all. It was stupid, but it didn't lead to the end of his career. That's a myth.

Yes i know that but i just find that mentality wrong, im going out to injure another professional sportsman over next to nothing..
He was frankly a bit of a dick, in my opinion at least.

It's what made him the player he was. Don't agree with it myself, but for a guy like him it must have driven him mad to see a guy telling him he was a faker while he rolled around in agony.

28-09-2010, 11:53 PM
Yeah it would piss you off but to still have that going round in your mind 3 years later? he must have had some problems lol.
It was wrong of him anyway and should have got a longer ban.
You can be aggressive, and you can be a wanker. in that match he was the latter.

I'd still have him over Gerrard though. Have him over most midfielders to be honest with you. He's a warrior.

Just is just class though.
works as hard.
is box to box despite what people have said.
Yet is a consistant finisher too.

He's not in the same league as Keane Ben. Really. Look, Gerrard can be great, but nah, Keane was incredible on a pitch in his prime.

Keane has become overated.
Not in the same league?? what are you talking about, Gerrard is one of the best players in the world right now..

No he's not. What's he won? Keane was the best in the business in his prime.

Whats Torres won? yet still considered the best striker in the world at times...
Whats fabregas won ? yet is also considered one of the best in the world.
Keane was never the best player in the world...

I never said he was, but if you ask any of the greatest players of his era who would they have first on their team it would be Keane.
Locke.

If Gerrard played for Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid, he would be considered the best player in the world. Because he plays for a team that don't win a trophy every year he is overlooked.

Would have, could have, should have. He didn't, Keane did. I'm sorry, that's very important, plus Gerrard has never won a league title. That's a huge thing.

I disagree a lot of people wouldnt have wanted to play with him because of his aggressive nasty nature.
Underating Gerrard 100%.
Like i said Torres hasnt won the league either, and start of last season i think it was last season, people were saying he was the best striker in the world.. so..
Keane didnt tackle he went in to foul.
Without just kicking their legs.. he would be tormented by pacey skillful players like messi villa torres...

It would have been a mistake moving abroad, rarely works out for English players. I can see why he stuck with us a few years ago when he was linked with Chelsea, but that was probably the wrong choice career wise for him (although i'm obviously glad that he stayed).

And you don't think Gerrard goes in to foul sometimes or Torres? When Gerrard was playing in the centre rather than attacking midfield he was just as physical. Sure look what's happened since he was put back in that position - should have been sent off last weekend.
I don't subscribe to this theory that he was a thug, and as I said before, you ask the players of his era who they would have on their team and he'd be top of their lists.

lol yes maybe so but nothing like keane!
I just watched a video.. someone slide tackled him, so he decided to stamp on their balls and their stomach twice with some fury..
took a swing at shearer.. pushed a ref and attempted to headbutt one..
And as i said before a lot of players wouldnt want to play with him just down to his aggressive nature.

Yes this is true Haaland had to retire soon afterwards but it was down to injury on his other leg
