ITV has announced plans to air the longest ever edition of The X Factor on October 9.

The live show, which will see the 12 finalists perform for a place in the next round, will run for two and a half hours.

An ITV spokesman confirmed to The Mirror that the episode will be the longest in the history of the series.

The length of the programme is said to be due to a "surprise" for viewers.

However, despite its increased length, The X Factor will not clash with BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing.

I think it's either gonna be a special guest performance, a wildcard or generally a new act for each category.

Hope it's a Wildcard :D

I remember they used the "Wildcard" in Pop Idol.

Sam Nixon and I think Rosie Ribbons? was chosen from the "Wildcard" which was great because I loved them both! and Sam got all the way to 3rd place! :)

Spoiler cause its a contestant that didnt get through to the finals

What if its a wildcard and Gamu gets it? Or they just bring Gamu back?

Well if it's true that Katie got put through and her existing record deal conflicts with the rules of the X Factor; then it could be a wildcard round for the girls who didn't get through to try and earn her spot on the live shows?!

Is it a wildcard for each category?

It will be an extra act for each category. Simon mentioned earlier in tonights show that he had already decided on 2 people to put through, but was undecided between 2 others for who to get the final spot (Simon said he was going to sleep on it), and Cheryl and Will.i.am had 4 people in consideration (Cheryl also said she was going to sleep on it).

If it's an extra act will it finish later than planned then or will there be a double elimination one week or something? :conf:

A wildcat (somebody from the girls) or a new act per category would be good.

If all the rumours of the final 12 are true then I hope to God that it is a wildcard thing and that ____ gets in!! (I don't know how to do a spoiler button!!)

If it's a wild card thing then they should take 3 acts that didn't make it to final 12 and put them in their own category without a judge and see how they fare with no judge mentoring them and just doing their own thing.

And Harry, Madonna can't sing either so don't think that's a problem.

They fail epicly at trying to be Big Brother with twists and turns.

Just st.fu and stick with singing.

Agree Patrick, I'm a Celeb started doing it with secret camps and stuff and double eliminations. Pretty soon we'll end up with Dermot revealing the Secret Studio Next Door. lol

And Harry, maybe it was an unfair comment. Madonna can sing albeit not very strongly.

We decide the category for the wildcard to be chosen, and then the judge choose who it will be.

Twists in Talent shows aren't unheard of, especially if it's a Wildcard.

Madonna is no Celine Dion but she can sing very well, take Evita for example.

It sounds silly but I hope it's not a wildcard, I hate the thought of one category having one more act than the others, particularly if it's Cheryl (although I'd struggle to pick 3 from hers).

I'd rather they make it 16 finalists and shove in a couple of double elim's.

What he's saying is she's not the a strong singer, she's more a performer
