To be accountable for something is to be responsible for something.

Who would the person in question get ripped apart by if they ******ed up.

Who does the person account to (hold themselves responsible to) as in who is their boss/supervisor or who are they responible to.

ACCOUNTABLE:
1 (of a person, organization, or institution) required or expected to justify actions or decisions; responsible : government must be accountable to its citizens | parents could be held accountable for their children's actions. See note at responsible .
2 explicable; understandable : the delayed introduction of characters' names is accountable, if we consider that names have a low priority.

Able and willing to account for ones own actions. Telling the truth about your own actions, and your own responsibility for something = be accountable.

When something goes wrong and it was your fault, standing up and saying "my bad" = being accountable.

Owning up to your mistakes.
