Since the X factor hit our screens back in 2004, the winner has always had a million pound recording contract but sometimes thats not always best.

Series 1:
Winner: Steve, Completely flopped after his first album and is now seen singing in pizza express.

Runner Up: G4, produced three albums all platinum and even performed at the royal albert hall

Series 2:

Winner: Shayne, Started off great for the first couple of years but then went downhill and no ones heard of him since

Runner Up: Andy, Produced two albums and represented the UK in the eurovision song contest

Series 3:

Winner: Leona, Obviously this is one exception as she has gone on to be a global superstar

Runner up: Ray, did good for himself by landing a top west end role as danny zucco from Grease

Series 4:

Winner: Leon, dropped by his record label a year later
Runner up: Rhydian, Produced two albums which reached the charts and currently performing as warm up acts at the o2 and the barbican

Series 5:

Winner: Alexandra, has also done very well for herself getting a number one album and all of her singles reaching the top 10 in the charts.
Runner Up: JLS, have the slight edge as they are now the biggest boyband in the UK having the biggest fan base all around england.

Series 6:

Winner: Joe, his new single has drifted immensely out of the top 10 even though he performed on the most watched show on Telly.
Runner Up: Olly, has had a number one single and his album is already having more pre-orders than Joe by far.

So what do you think about this?
Should people be disappointed for runner-up? or is it the best thing to happen in the long run?

the good thing about not winning is you don't have to release the winners single. like if olly had won last year he would have to released the climb which didn't suit him at all.

I woulnt say Shayne has done nothing, he's got a new album coming out, still a very string following too.

Diana, Jedward, Same Difference and Danyl are still around despite not reaching the final:).

They do seem to do better than the actual winners in most cases. Plus the runners up don't vanish for an entire year

Series 2 and Series 3 completely an utterly bollocked your theory.

Ray? Who the ****** remembers him? He's more well known now for Dancing On Ice  Leona is sadly a star.

Andy? He vanished.
Shayne is releasing his next album very soon.

Runners up get more freedom and time plus don't have to rush to get their material out like the winner.. also in some cases they are lucky to be free of the Cowell stranglehold unless he signs them up, glad at what JLS have acheived:D.

Being runner up or even firther down now can be a good thing.

I think part of the problem is with the plans of Simon Cowell as to the winner is that it is a mistake to have a single brought out instantly, but then nothing again until X Factor returns to the TV,fans like 'new' stuff out and lots of it,of course all won't make Number one but to wait so long for an album and follow up single is something that few,if any, other acts would want to have to wait to do.
It is vital to keep the act in the publics eye.If you don't, the danger is they move to other stars.

Nobody plays for the runner up spot. They wanna win. Not just for themselves but for the judge, their family, friends and supporters etc

Winning it guarantees you a decent sum of money and a great shot at a career. And also shows that you have a lot of fans.

I think Joe coming out of the closet will lose him many young girl fans, sadly.

rhydian was dire....on one performance he even had a bogey in his nose it really upset me. He was fun on a couple of the x factor performances but who wants to listen to that rather shrill averagely classical opera voice in real life apart from old ladies from Guildford

joe mc eldridge had a good voice but it wobbled too much and the whole gay thing is so 1990's.

the only half decent act out of all those is same difference and that is mostly because i want to have a gay romance with sean
Leona....yawn well actually not yawn, she does some amazing stuff with her voice, but much of her stuff is all a bit packaged and dull

Their aim should be to win. If you don't win and if you are decent enough singer/performer/whatever you will be signed! Simple as!

Just that Simon's label have given Joe the wrong songs......

I like Ambitions.

But I think a ballad may have been a safer first choice.

But I think the real problem is that young male popstars are just not doing it in the charts. Justin Bieber is doing well with the tweeny girls but apart from him there hasnt been any pretty male popstars ruling the charts past few years.

Its the females who are dominating the charts. No surprise that it tends to be female winners who do best both on Xfactor and on American idol even more so.

By the way, Rhydian was dropped by SyCo after two albums and Joe's single's midweek position was no. 4, which is well within the top ten.

JLS have gotten to where they are by flashing their abs while Alexandra has done amazing just by singing, no competition for who has done better in my eyes, sales or no sales, Alexandra is still better.
