Absolutely Yes. After all ticket prices are based on how many seats the airline is able to sell to make the flight viable and make a profit. If a fat person takes up more than 1 seat, they can always pay for a second. It's nothing to do with discrimination, just pure and simple commercial economics - the airlines aren't charities.

yes simple logic.
Sign Of The Times.
Most fat people can fit in an aeroplane seat tbh, only the huge ones whose fat is actually bulging onto the other seats should have to pay.

If they take up more than one seat, of course.
We have to pay more for excess baggage, why the hell not for excess flab?
Stacey.
18-10-2010, 04:59 PM
Of course. Fat people should have to pay more for everything in life, then they'd actually try to lose weight, so there'd be less fat people in the world and you wouldn't have to walk up the highstreet thinking ew at every other person you see.
And if they take up two seats definitely, although they should have to anyway.

They should fit wings to the fattest ones and use them as cargo planes for imported food. On landing at local airports they could regurgitate their stomach contents into a Edie Stobart truck.
I think Asda already do this

Fat people shouldn't be allowed on planes full stop, they snore, they smell and worse of all they sweat. I had to sit next to one of them on a fight to Faro and the beast wouldn't stop sweating.
Put them on a freighter or something

I have been unfortunate enough to sit next to someone who was really big.
I guess technically they could fit their ass in the seat, but their flab was actually squashing me. He managed to fasten his seatbelt after puffing and panting for about 5 minutes...and it MUST have hurt the way it was digging in. And yes, he smelt really bad, and also ate the whole time and kept farting. It was on a flight to America too...And I dont think it is very fair to expect someone to sit next to a person like that for like 10 hours or so. I literally had like half a seat and felt sick the whole time.
Vicky.
18-10-2010, 07:02 PM
Then again, I prefer that to sitting next to someone who gets travel sick. I would literally have a breakdown if I had to sit next to someone who was vomiting :(

I normally wouldn't support what I see as any discrimination of any kind be it overweight or anyhting else, age whatever. However with perhaps a bit of hypocrisy I have to admit I am now of the view they should pay extra, for the reason that a year ago, I was flying out for a break with a friend, a last minute decision but where we were going there was only 1 seat left on that particular Plane.
She insisted I go first and she'd follow the next day. However once on the plane I saw there was this very large person occupying 2 seats,it turned out they had only paid for one seat but this meant I and my friend could have travelled together on the same flight at least. Had that person not needed 2 seats.
So from a selfish view I would now say yes, if anyone needs to occupy 2 seats then they should pay for 2 seats.

It depends how tall you are. There are a lot of men that weight 13 stone and over and are not fat at all.
(Women show more weight than men. If a man and woman were the same height and same weight the woman would look a lot more noticeably fatter)

I disagree about paying for an extra seat. Truth is, the planes should be fitted with seats that can accommodate ALL size people. Humans come in all shapes and sizes..hello. Not everybody is fat through pure gluttony and self indulgence. Some have inheritted weight issues and some have medical or psychological issues that cause their weight gain.
But they are still ONE person. They shouldnt be charged double ffs.

Its the airlines fault they don't make seats for real people...who come in all shapes and sizes.
Its discrimination charging extra.

People choose to fly with that airline, the airlines can do what they like, they are providing a service that wouldn't otherwise be available.
If people don't like it, they should find another airline to fly with or use alternate methods of transport (which would probably be more expensive than 2 seats).

Im making a moral decision. Following your logic you could bring in a ton of rules regarding transport that would discriminate against all kinds of people.
Its morally wrong and outright discrimination. Business or not.

Why stop at airlines? Let's fight for "Fat Seats" on buses, tubes, theatres, cinemas etc etc to prevent unnecessary discomfort and inconvenience to the rest of us who are otherwise currently being discriminated against, having paid for a seat on which we are forced to perch precariously as we share it with the overflowing buttocks of a total stranger.
The businesses concerned would, of course, have to increase their prices in order to accommodate their fat customers, which means in effect that the rest of us would be subsidising those people who CHOOSE to be fat, as well as those who have some genetic predisposition to obesity.
Perhaps a fairer method would be to ensure that those who have a medical condition that makes them obese can get help with the cost of an extra seat - a bit like the NHS scheme for mobility aids etc. The rest of the fatties who see it as a lifestyle choice can pay for their own extra seat.
Yep,i am sick to death of BIG fat people bobbing around and getting bigger bigger by the second, they should pay more because there is more of them.

Too bloody right fat people should pay more.
I've said for years that instead of weighting a suitcase - one person and one suitcase should be weighed: and that should be the criteria.
I am approx 58 kilos in weight -roughtly about 8 and half stone.
I see people who weight more than me - my suitcase may be 2 kilos over and I have to pay for that. Their case is bang on - but their body weight is double mine - yet they don't pay for that?
1 passenger + 1 suitcase = 'x' amount of allowed flying weight. That should be the rule.
And if their bodies overflow outwith the seat size on the plane, they should be charged accordingly.

You know, I think you're on to something - if it's all about weight, why don't they take passengers' weights into consideration? If a person is slender, they should be allowed a higher weight allowance in luggage.

The idea is fine in theory, however it was trialled by a couple of airlines and it created more problems than it solved. Admitted the problems were on the airlines side generally. (On most flights they would lose money if a fair weight policy was introduced).
For example would parents bulk up childrens baggage if their own baggage is weighty, if so wouldn't it then be fair for airlines to remove reduced fares for kids etc. after all they take up a seat space the airline could charge adult rates for.
Would people in wheelchairs have to pay for the wieght of their wheelchair?
One or two airlines in the states have introduced a size policy where if you cant sit in a seat with the armrests down you pay for two seats, this extra seat cost is refunded is the flight isnt full.

given the increase in overweight people in this country alone, I think the airlines would make money, rather than lose it.
Wheelchairs as long as the person had good reason for it - excluding fatness, would be excluded. Excess flab is a luxury, not a necessity. There you go. Sorted.
