The 10 Downing Street cat Humphrey has died, a spokesman for the prime minister has confirmed.

Humphrey was a Cabinet Office cat, and if you look at the papers released under the Freedom Of Information Act, you will see the Humphry was classed as a civil servant. He came to Downing Street in 1989 under Mrs T, served under Major and retired when Blair came to power (according to the conspiracy theories booted out by Cherie Blair - but officially because he had a kidney infection.

I hope this clears things up.
