2010, The year we finally find a cure for the common cold?

In a dramatic breakthrough that re-writes the medical textbooks, scientists have discovered a new immune defence that could cure the common cold.

The new discovery by scientists could lead to a cure for the common cold
Researchers in Cambridge found that viruses can be destroyed by the immune system even after they have invaded human cells.

Previously it had been thought that antibodies could only kill viruses outside the cell.

The discovery raises the possibility of highly effective drugs against the common cold, the winter vomiting virus and rotavirus, which causes severe diarrhoea.

Scientists funded by the Medical Research Council found that antibodies are able to cling on to viruses as they invade human cells. A virus would then normally take over the cell's machinery to make more copies of itself.

But the presence of the antibody inside the cell triggers a mechanism that kills the virus within two hours - long before the virus is able to do any damage.
The scientists now hope to find drugs that could enhance the virus-destroying mechanism inside the cell.

They say a nasal spray or an asthma-style inhaler could deliver the drug directly to the cells that are attacked by respiratory viruses.
The drug could be taken at the first sign of a cold and prevent it getting worse.

Just said on ITV1 News there now,

Apparently it's not just the cold, it's things like the flu and other viruses, if you take a drug that should be available by 2015, then it will stop you from ever getting it again.

So like almost 4 years of a wait =/

waiting a possible 4 years isnt really that bad if it means that your never going t get a cold again.

I thought that the common cold mutates making it impossible to find a cure?

But yeah they should be researching a cure for aids, cancer etc instead of a cure for a cold :/

Colds are pretty harmless, flu's a different thing altogether obviously, especially for older people and those with poor immune systems. Don't really think they need to be fannying about finding a cure for the common cold, it actually helps build up your immune system to get the odd bug, why do we need to take pills for every little thing these days? Agree more money should be put into more important illnesses rather than this.

The cure hasnt been found yet.

A way for antibodies to attack viruses after infection has using research involving the common cold and other related retroviruses.

If this method proves possible and effective then the same research could also be used to create cures for other viruses including HIV/AIDS.

And of course the drug companies will love it, it means they can overcharge us for the drugs that will be used.
