Wouldn't be surprised if that meant hers was in the top 5, Adele got top 5 didnt she?

There is of course the possibility that people bought it en masse to remind the public that Shakespear's Sister's version is better .

Since Cher crucified the song, people want to hear the vastly superior original version.

and now, luckily, Novo knows too, his life is now complete!
more like people have been reminded what a good track it is - the original of course - in fact Cher's version didn't sound so bad until you listen to them together and realise just how dire she was. And why is everyone having orgasms because she sang - its a singing contest der!!

Since Cher crucified the song, people want to hear the vastly superior original version.
...but they don't have to buy it to hear it, so that can't be the reason. Whenever songs like this re-enter the chart after they've been performed by a contestant on X Factor - it's usually because people liked the song/performance, listen to the original and then buy it. I very much doubt this song would've charted at #9 today had Cher not performed it on XF, do you?
It'll be interesting to see the sales figures from the iTunes sales of the contestants' performances if they publish them at the end of the series [I hope they do]. Then we'll be able to gauge an idea of which version is more popular, or, in your words 'vastly superior', won't we?

'Hello' is also good with mass appeal, and they do some rather weirder songs that I like but perhaps not everyone would like, 'Black Sky' and 'The Trouble with Andre' for example.

I'm not her biggest fan but you can't deny that performance wasn't a good one. She's not the best singer but she pulled it off well enough and she has that something that the others don't have.

to be fair the original "Stay" was done in the studio
