France’s traditional meal was added to the Unesco world heritage list, in the intangible category, on Tuesday. A committee of Unesco experts decided in Nairobi that French gastronomy, with its presentation and rituals, fulfilled the necessary conditions to be added to the list.
The committee agreed that French cuisine is part of a custom that celebrates the most important moments in the lives of individuals and groups.
"The French like to meet, drink well, eat well and enjoy themselves," said French ambassador to Unesco Catherine Colonna. "It's part of a tradition of living well."
The committee discussed the French case at length, fearing it could be abused for commercial ends. It will keep a close eye the usage of the Unesco logo by French restaurants.
The intangible heritage list was introduced in 2003; 178 cultural practices and traditions have been added to the list so far.
It is not France's first appearance on the list. Last year, the scribing tradition in French timber framing made it in as well as Maloya, a genre of music from La Réunion.

Hell yes !
I love the UK, I've lived there for a bit but I've got to say the food is horrendous. Past the Fish & Chips, the rest is horrible. But then again, UK people have a different idea of what a meal is all about and that is the biggest different between France and most of the countries. I still want to live in the UK tho.

We've evolved in recent years in fairness. God knows the UK TV industry churns out five food programmes on each channel seemingly everyday. But there is still a large section of the public, even those who watch those shows, that are still happy to settle for the most plain, boring food (usually unseasoned, overcooked meat covered in gravy thickened with cornflour :yuk:) and the more exciting ideas we get are often imported. It's only just in the last decade that upmarket British food is carving out its own identity, but obnoxious, self-important (usually male) TV chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver give us a bad image.

UK cuisine is a bit more than just fish & chips! What stereotyped rubbish! Unless you have tried properly cooked Shepherds pie; Lancashire hotpot; traditional roast beef with yorkshire pudding, the full English breakfast; cornish pasties; stew and dumplings; steak & kidney pudding; apple crumble; jam roly poly and custard etc etc you don't know what you're missing. Give me good English cuisine any day over the pretentiousness of French cuisine which has to rely on various fiddly sauces in order to lend any flavour.
And before you ask, YES I have lived in France - and was not impressed with the cuisine at all. Italian, Greek and Spanish cuisines are far superior.
Are the Scots not on that list?!
We too like to meet, drink well, eat well and enjoy ourselves!!

The UK just don't hold food in high regard like other places such as France & Italy do. The rest isn't horrible, its just past fish & chips there isn't much else 'British' apart from pies and stew and stuff. You French also have a weird idea of putting everything out on the table and getting your own like a buffet, its easier just to do everything in the kitchen!
Oh and you can't beat an English Sunday dinner
