View Full Version : Ben Ben on Will and Kate

Ben Duncan has been on ITV2 this evening talking about the engagement of Will and Kate as they were all at St Andrews University
With an interesting life and mix of friends which cover the entire spectrum of British society (but all of whom have, as he says, 'something about them') is it any wonder he was so stressed and bored with the company (excluding a couple of noble exceptions) he was trapped with in the BB house?

No wonder at all UV, a little bit ironic really how he got dissed on DS for answering questions on the JJJ relationshi......and yet here he is giving comment on the future King and Queen of our Nation.:dance::elephant::elephant:

The most wonderful illustration of bitter almonds has just gone up - and it sort of proves that there is a God - and also why the almonds are so bitter in the first place - it all makes sense now
Ben's association with William and Catherine is probably going to spark off some more jealousy but I am sure that he will be able to handle it
They certainly have plenty of time for him - which will stand him in good stead over future years - he might turn into the next royal pundit

Ben is scheduled to be on Radio London tonight at 10.00 - probably talking about the Will and Kate story amongst other things - even people far from London can listen in to this by using the BBC i-Player - he is usually very relaxed and fluent and interesting on the radio - in many ways it is a wonderful medium for him (though I always miss seeing his face too)

Are you being deliberately thick or just plain facetious? William and CATHERINE are getting married -that is the name on her birth certificate and will be on her marriage certificate.
Clearly you ARE jealous of the fact that Ben attended St Andrews the same time as William, since you made a point of coming on to this thread to have some sly digs at Ben. The thread is clearly about BEN not the thick, boring pikey and her even thicker aussie sidekick, no doubt still trying to drum up some interest in their PAs in seedy little pubs and clubs.

She is a good chat show style broadcaster - very relaxed and on the ball - I love the way the conversations meander onto all kinds of diverse subjects. She and Ben are an excellent double act - they bounce off each other so well, in a Phil & Fern kind of way (but a tad less of the low brow). A good media "husband and wife" are a rare thing - look at the lack of chemistry with some of the TV show double acts that are rammed down our throats these days. Adrian & Christine's chemistry didn't transfer from the One Show to the utterley appalling Daybreak. And Jason Manford...errr, less said about him the better at the moment !
I'm glad that Ben's connection and regular appearances on the show have introduced me to Jo Goode - I probably wouldn't have found her programme otherwise, I've been away from London so long I lost the habit of following the radio shows.
That's the beauty of the internet though isn't it ? We can listen to pretty much anything from anywhere. Such choice !:elephant:

Whilst the Royal engagement is a source of something good for the Country in my opinion, I might get fed up with hearing too much about it in time. However that aside. Ben commenting on Prince William and Kate's engagement is not something off the back of BB, he was asked to do so by a respected news company, to give his views, so they must have been interested to know what Mr Ben Duncan had to say on the engagement :)
Ben has been sought after for radio and TV, not because of BB, but because he is a natural for it, he gets noticed, he has that something that TV and radio producers want to hear, he has a relaxed and good speaking voice, is intelligent and knows the subject of what he is asked to comment on. That is where Ben's success lies, and why he 'will' do well.
Josie, JJ1, Mario, et el live off the back of their BB success of the win and the final, and in the case of JJ1 hanging onto Josie's coattails for all he's worth. The perfumes, songs, doing fan touring, turning on of Christmas lights, and fitness dvds and the mag deals, are all the success they have at the moment, apart from a few charity stints which to my cynical eyes as good as what they do there is, it is good PR to keep the interest going. They didn't do much before BB after all, so I suppose they need to hang onto what they can whilst they can now, but it will fade.
Yes, Ben has done some asides, he has his own skin products due to be on the market soon hopefully, but there again I believe he was appraoched with a view to them, he has also and he will get approached for other stuff also of which some he may choose to do. But he doesn't use them to stay in the public profile or feed off BB. Ben was already in media before BB and is climbing the media ladder slowly but surely more successfully now :)

I'm not that interested in the royals to know what name was on her birth certificate, but I know the whole world calls her kate, she calls herself kate, her friends and family call her kate so to call her Catherine is just being pretentious.
I'm not jealous of Ben, why should I be? I could think of many things that might make me slightly envious of someone but nodding to prince william and then being asked 10 years later for a quote about his marriage isn't enough motive for me

Catherine is not a royal. :p YET!!It says much that you think that calling a person by their birth name is 'pretentious'. Given that the wording used was in fact, "William and Catherine', that was a huge step for a hint, together with the title of the thread, and the other posts that were put up before you enterd the thread, so no need to be facetious as has already been pointed out.
If this was about Lady Di as she was fondly known pre-marriage, I'd sure if someone referred to Lady Diana - you'd instantly know Diana was in fact 'Di'. You knew exactly who 'Catherine' was, so let's quit with the bullsh£t - all you were doing was being awkward for the sheer hell of it.
It's great that Ben was asked for comments on the Royal engagment. Why? Because whether you like it or not Lauarc, Ben did have connection to William at St. Andrews. It's regrettable that you cannot accept that with good grace, seeing as is indeed fact, and not ideological whimsical thoughts being banded around.
That is why Ben was asked for comment. Not because Ben was on Big Brother, but because Ben was in fact there at the time William and Catherine began romancing. Try to belittle that nugget of factual information all you like, but you can't mess with history and you can't mess with the truth.

Well said Mids, its just sheer jealousy.....otherwise no comment would be needed. The facts speak for themselves.....as you said history cannot be changed, Ben did have a connection with William and Catherine ( or Kate as she was then known) and that is fact, also fact that a well known news broadcaster thought well enough to ask Ben to comment.....not once either but lots of airtime for Ben.:dance::dance::elephant::elephant::elep hant:

Catherine is Catherine, not Kate. Its her given name and the one on her birth certificate, its also the name she will have for any royal honours bestowed upon her after marriage.
Its not pretentious in the slightest to use your birth name in any context......especially for official announcements....and many people will always prefer to call her my her given name and not the shortened version.

As a supporter of Ben I am not dilusional, Jo Goode loves Ben and she is not dilusional, I really think that its you in this instance that is dilusional, never mind though.....Mario will very soon be a distant memory.

There is nothing to swallow it's a none story, that's the point and I haven't commented on ben, my comments before were that that radio presenter was delusional and some of ben's fans are too, ben isn't saying he's better or has done better than the other housemates so I'm not having a go at ben
So you have come onto a thread about Ben, and by your self admission above, have not commented on Ben.
So......what exactly was your point - apart from insulting Ben supporters.?

it would be pretentious if she and all her friends and family reffered to her by her chosen name but others thought that was too common and so gave her another name altogether.
You have lost me, her given real name is Catherine, some people call her Kate for short, she has not been given another name....just the one she was born with.

It's a discussion forum about big brother, If I wanted to post negative comments about ben I could but I didn't I posted that that radio presenter who claimed that ben was the only one after bb that anyone remembered was wrong, I guess if you stopped random people in the street and asked who they remembered from big brother they would say john james and josie because they have had the most news mag coverage after bb.
I also commented that Ben said in the house he had never spoken to william just nodded to him in passing, there is nothing wrong with ben making comments about the wedding or any random person but he doesn't really have an insight into their relashionship because he nodded to him once or twice

Utter nonsense. Most of the population have a given name at birth that is shortened as an affectionate or more casual address.
Susan/Sue, Michael/Mike, David/Dave, Charles/Charlie....I could go on offering perfectly acceptable non pretentious examples for hours if I didn't have better things to do than argue a non issue.
I have a full given name which I use at work, but my friends shorten it. Same as my son, his birthname is neither pretentious or particularly formal and he goes by birth name and an abbreviated version in social circumstances. I specifically chose that name so it would work in all elements of life.
Pretentious ? Poppycock. Normal as bread and butter.

Wouldn't it be hysterical if Ben awoke one morning to find a Royal Wedding Invite on his mat! Now that would be funny as hell.

Excellent example of deflection. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a radio presenter you were nipping at. ;) But we both know that.
One thing is for sure: I know who won't get an invite to the Royal Wedding for her warbling on twitter - Mario's chubby blonde haired girly pal. (You'd have to have seen the twitcam last wkend to understand) ;)
Wonders who will get an invite to the Royal Wedding!
Still thinks it was quite something that Benjamin Duncan was sought out for his opinion, for his comments, having been educated at the same place that William and Catherine found that they had a lifelong bond.

Great stuff, I love it - see this is the difference, I don't care who they invite to their wedding - it is their wedding and they can invite who they want. I'd far rather some of my tax went to that than some scroungers who don't actually work for a living ...... ;)
And....it will give plenty something to moan about then, and it will keep some people very happy. The ones who don't like it can moan all they like and be content that they have something to bleat about, and the ones who want to simply enjoy a Royal Wedding, all guests included, will be content to enjoy an historical event in the Royal calender. What a way to go: everyone wins.

Why don't you get your facts straight before posting such drivel. The Royal Family are footing the bill for the wedding and reception - it was announced today. The taxpayer will foot the bill for security etc of the heads of state etc who will be attending, and any outlay will be recouped ten times over in terms of increased tourism, sales of souvenires worldwide and Royal Mail special edition stamps etc etc.
They don't have to run anything by you or any other member of the public - they contribute more than their fair share to the economy of this country - they can invite who the hell they like to their wedding.

Again, there's nothing like a bit of truth to balance the scales, thanks for the clarification. The money that will be brought into the British Economy on the back of such a Royal Wedding will drown anything paid out for the event itself.
I might be wrong here... but aren't William and Catherine also tax payers and not only by what they spend, by way of PAYE... you know, paying tax on what they earn due to them working for a living!! :spin:
Apart from that, as I mentioned earlier though. It means everyone will be kept happy. Those who want to moan about it, will have something to moan about, those who want to enjoy and celebrate it, will do so. Every one is happy!
Still think there will be a few names on the guest list that will be interesting when the time comes! Yeeehaa !

Eeehhhh? See posts 75, (yours), post 77 (mine) and then post 78 (LauraC's) which brought in the taxes and lead to it going off topic. In fairness: given that threads evolve, an interview with Ben, concerning a Royal engagement would inevitably lead to discussing who may be invited to the wedding - in which Ben,the person being interviewed was also mentioned may have been considered as a guest - which is what posts 75 and 77 were about.
but back strictly on topic. The interview that Ben was asked his opinion of. Makes me wonder why they did choose Ben, and not some other random person who would also have been at St Andrew's university with the Royal Couple. After all, there would have literally have been hundreds of students who would have come into contact with the couple. Does Ben have more than a 'loose' connection to the Royals than we may know about.

You really need to accept it, Ben was asked to comment on this engagement, because he had a connection, whether you like it or not. Rubbish it all you want, but the truth is there for all to see - Ben was deemed important enough to be asked, that's it in a nutshell.

he nodded at him once or twice, it would be like asking my aunty for a quote on how she feels about the death of diana because she shook her hand once.
Kate is Kate not Catherine so it is pretentious to call her Catherine when noone else does. And when william was at univercity ben said he was dating someone else, ben commented on that, try them nuggets!
You do have an interesting turn of phrase - even 'try those nuggets' would be a suggestion I had never actually heard before - it is interesting and extremely unusual - I rather like it - a 'different' turn of phrase - I am all for innovation in the language
But back to the main thrust of the thread - the only reason I referred to William and Catherine in the first place was that it had been mentioned quite a few times at that point that from now on she would be known as Catherine rather than the shorter version, so when the time comes she will be Princess Catherine and ultimately presumably Queen Catherine - there was no more to it than that - and so it is far from pretentious - just factual as they are going to use her full given name officially from now on - it won't take all that much getting used to - it is not really all that unexpected - and it makes sense to most people, I think
