It doesn't surprise me - the subjugation of women is normal and acceptable in such countries, particularly in rural areas. The problem is that if and when they emigrate to the West they bring their medieval and reactionary attitudes and prejudices with them.

I agree.. It's horrific that people do not have the right to get married to someone that they chose to be married to. Surely there are human rights against the whole arranged marriage idea. Every person is an individual who, I personally think, has the right to make a decision about what they want to do and what they don't want to do; age or sex isn't a factor. I guess that the tradition will die out in the coming decades, I agree though that it's strange how some parts of the world have no idea about how 'modern' people live their lives. I guess that every individual group/cult of people is different though. I personally couldn't stand living in a lifestyle that is so restricted.

Yeah there are still huge areas of the world who refuse to accept the need to modernise and move on from outdated traditions

True but there is a need in some areas for the retention of some traditions. A few years time and a much higher than normal rate of birth defects due to inbreeding, recessive genes, a much higher rate of so called honour killings etc in remote areas like this one and people will be debating the reasons behind that.

What do you Expect?

Yeah, I know I just heard the story on the radio this morning and had to share, i know this stuff goes on but I still get shocked by these things when I hear them. It makes me realise how lucky I am and my daughter is, that we happened to be born on this side of the world.

Yeah, I just think these kind of stories need to be highlighted even if people don't find them surprising, so that something may eventually be done about it. Womens rights are so out dated in some of these places, they can't be happy with the way they're treated. I see Eastenders is touching on it too at the moment which is something also.
