New 'Tomb Raider' to be revealed soon
The next Tomb Raider game will be shown in a UK magazine early next year.
GamesMaster will be printing information and screenshots of the unannounced project in an issue released January 4, according to CVG.
The first details of the project emerged in June, stating that Lara Croft would be stranded on a mysterious island off the coast of Japan.
Earlier this month it was reported that Game Informer will reveal the game on December 6.
I remember reading the reports about it earlier this year, It's apparently going to be more survival based rather then the looking-for-artefacts type of deal. I think it's got massive potential, Tomb Raider is in need of another big shake up.

Looks like a massive disappointment for me. :) TR has been sh!t since the original developers were fired back in 2003 and the series was handed over to an American developer (Crystal Dynamics).
I'll get it, but I won't hold out hope for it actually being good seeing as the last 3 games have been bitter disappointments for me.

And OMG I'd hate it if they tried to "remake" TR2. The one with TR1 was beyond abysmal. Half the original game wasn't there, stuff was changed beyond recognition, the storyline was changed, Lara was made into a pussy. A remake of TR2 would be good, but NOT in the way they did it for TR1.

I thought the legend Trilogy (particularly Legend and Anniversary) had some of the best TR games. Legend brought the engine upto date and the trilogy's storyline was actually really good compared to the usual tosh. If Underworld wasn't so buggy it'd have been one of my favourite TR games.
I like her characterisation in the newer games, she was a bit more then a big boobed action heroine in them.

I didn't like the newer games as I generally fell out of interest with the series but they were needed. Tomb Raider had been sucking since Revelation which while it's a fan favourite as a classic old school TR title really should have been where the series turned instead of sticking with that same absoloutely horrible control scheme that has dated the games so bad. Heck even III was a bit pretentious. As well as being, IMO, riddiculously hard in parts and lacking the same variety of levels II had [II was easily the series peak IMO].
Then you had the borefest expansion pack that was Chronicles and the half finished Angel. No wonder the series was taken away from Core.

I completely disagree with everything. :p The stories in the first 3 TRs were pretty basic, but then they got pretty interesting. Legend's storyline needed for Lara's biography to be re-written, which SERIOUSLY angered me.

The game is completely different on the Wii. Get the next gen version, even though it's still a massive pile of w@nk.

You serious? TR3 had the most variety in levels out of the series. The Indian jungle, South Pacific, Nevada Desert, High Security Compound, the London rooftops & abandoned Aldwych and Antarctica.
I find Chronicles to be pretty underrated. I love the atmosphere in the Ireland levels. <3
Angel of Darkness was a massive controversy. Eidos (the publishing parent company) hadn't given Core Design enough time. Core originally had 3 years to make the game, but the deadline was then shortened by a year, then it was delayed after numerous complications and forced out before it was really ready. AoD has a lot more to offer for the same amount of development time than Legend, IMO.
I just rather the TR2 levels. Venice had a great atmosphere, then you had the industrial offshore locations, the Maria Doria stuff, the monastery and so on.
Temple Of Xian was about as epic as a level gets.

I disagree, I think the pre legend games had very little story or character in them, It was the locations that was meant to shine instead of the story and characters. Lara didn't have much of a personality in the earlier games, She only got any depth in the Legend games when they gave her a motive and an actual character. They also provided a cast of characters I quite liked too, Amanda was a good character and I liked the changes to Natla.
The generic thugs in the early games were fantastic. The character design was so bad but in a good way.

You obviously haven't played Angel of Darkness. That has the deepest story to it, and lots of interesting characters. TR4 also has quite a deep story.
Lara did have personality, it's just that the games didn't revolve around HER. She was just the avatar for the game and what she always said would be short, sharp and to the point. At least she was a strong character back then - now that her biography, personality and looks have been altered COMPLETELY, making her unrecognisable to me, she just isn't the same character.

I've played Revelations and part of AOD, the Legend games were better storywise though (and gameplay wise, time is not kind to the older Tomb Raider games). It fleshed out her character more, gave her a motive and a goal for what she does ETC.

Square Enix has lifted the lid on its new vision for one of its biggest franchises, announcing Tomb Raider, an origins tale that goes back to the roots of Lara Croft.
A piece of artwork reveals a Lara that's markedly different to the one that's fronted the Tomb Raider games since 1995, looking much younger and much more ragged – thanks, no doubt, to the premise of the new game.
http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/image/article/113/1138626/crystal-dynamics-project-untitled-20101206055332936.jpg
Promising to tell the story of Lara's very first adventure, Tomb Raider takes the heroine and strands her on a beach where she is 'on her own but not alone', with the emphasis said to be on survival.
"Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider," said developer Crystal Dynamic's Studio Head Darrell Gallagher. "This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."
Lara's last big console outing was in Tomb Raider Underworld, though she's had a more diminutive outing in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which was well received when it launched this year.
There's no word on platforms or release dates, but expect more details to filter through as Game Informer's first look begins to get properly dissected.
I'll be interested to see more about the gameplay. Sounds good though.

AoD was extremely ambitions. Eidos royally ****ed with Core Design by forcing the game out before it was even done so that it would coincide with the film. AoD tried tonnes of new stuff without changing the core (no pun intended) elements of the series and Lara Croft, and it would have been an incredible game if Eidos gave them enough time.
Change is only good if the change is good.

I think the changes have been good, the level design is miles better and although Underworld was buggy most of the legend trilogy had great upto date gameplay. There's been very few changes that haven't worked well I believe.

The gameplay in the trilogy is less good, IMO. She has tiny jumps, can ONLY grab edges that the developers want you to and the free climbing was less open-ended, unlike AoD where it was open-ended. In the first 6 TRs you could grab ANY ledge that looked grabbable etc.
I don't think it's too early. This TR is gonna be survival horror, rated 18+ so there's probably gonna be swearing. It's said that Lara's bio is gonna be re-written AGAIN, Lara looks completely different.

I liked that she had more realistic limits in the newer games, it was fairly ridiculous in AOD when she could do that silly Matrix jump. Also you could only grab certain ledges in the old games, the only difference with the newer ones is that there's signifiers on the grab-able ledges now.
It is too early as we haven't seen any gameplay. It's like throwing out a book because you don't like what's on the cover.
The game is going to be based around SURVIVAL, there's nothing about horror mentioned anywhere except for the enemy pictures. I took it to mean that it's more about finding resources and surviving the natural perils of island life with some supernatural enemies in the mix rather then out and out survival horror. Also I remember in the earlier games that they mentioned that she was in a plane crash as a young adult where she was the only survivor. It sounds to me that's what they're focusing on instead of completely rewriting her. As for the look, I quite like it.
EDIT: I don't think I've seen it mentioned anywhere that it's going to be rated 18 and the rating of games only occurs when it's finished so nobody knows what it'll be rated in the end as we've seen very little that shines no light on anything gameplay wise.

Nope, you could grab any ledge that looked like you could grip onto it. In the newer games you can only grab those which the developer decides you can.
True.
Yeah Lara was in a plane crash, but they're now changing that to her research vessel being crashed. She's also not rich anymore. She has been re-written again. There's more info at http://www.tombraiderforums.com.

No, you could only grab hold of ledges that the designers wanted you to grab hold of. They weren't free plan at all since you still had to follow a path through the level. In the first level of Tomb Raider 2 you still had to make your way up the cliff in the path dictated to you by the game. The only difference with the new game is that some ledges lead nowhere and are just there for decoration.
I've read a few topics and they say she's 'ordinary' not anything about her not being rich. and so what if they've changed her? Why be so close minded about a project you know so little about? There's been plenty of times in other franchises when fans have thrown their toys out the pram because of a re-invention only to admit when they've actually played the game (shocking concept I know) that the fuss was for nothing.
It's not like they're gonna abandon the old style it's probably a deviation for the sake of versatility. Like that one off Prince of Persia they did.

In the first 6 TRs, you 100% could grab any ledge you wanted. And there were dead ends. The levels were proper complicated. In Legend onwards they've been pretty straight forward, and you could only hold onto specifically scripted edges.
What do you mean so what if they changed her? They redid her biography yet again. She was my ****ing icon for years and they've destroyed the original character I idolised. :(
I am still being open minded about this. I just need to mentally accept that the original style of TR and the original Lara Croft will never return, then I'll be able to enjoy the game.

It's a different interpretation that's all. I imagine this will be a one off game and that they'll take elements of it and apply them to the normal style TR's in future. I love the fact that they're doing something so different and risky, when a series becomes safe it becomes boring.
Details of the recently-announced Tomb Raider reboot have appeared online.
Performance capture will be provided for the 21-year-old Lara Croft and her fellow humans stranded on the island, according to Game Informer (via NeoGAF).
The open-world title will see Lara's abilities improve over time, providing her with new tools, gear and athletic prowess to access new areas of the island.
Base camps act as places to combine items and initiate fast travel, and Lara will require food and water to survive.
Deaths are to be brutal, with one case describing a man stabbing Lara in the chest before leaning over to close her eyes, and another where Lara is pinned down by boulders before another falls and crushes her head.
Tomb Raider is likely to be released on multiple platforms next year.
I'm liking this the more I hear, I can't wait to see some gameplay footage.
