Depeche Mode are obviously massively underrated in their homeland. That's a fact of life rather than any bias on my part. They had a non stop battle with the British press for the first twenty years of their career who found it difficult to place them into a niche alongside other more trite synth acts of the 80's and the dreaded emergence of hair metal.

Now they have gained a lot more respect but continually get pigeonholed as an '80's band' by British music journalists despite still having a consistent, well lauded output. Things were different in central Europe and America who embraced the band on a stadium level by the late 80's.

jgyZ2yIwYlo

Another one that comes to mind is The Wonderstuff, a great bout of goofy Uni rock from the black country. They pretty much killed their own legacy stone dead by doing 'Dizzy' with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer but they had some great tunes.

PHohSL4WXJQ

Apart from that Goldfrapp I find to be continually underrated. Most of Gary Numan's work is underrated. Hurts, Marina & The Diamonds and Bat For Lashes would be more modern examples.

The Calling. Most will disagree...but some of their songs are my favourite ever. And they are only really known for 'Wherever you will go' which I think is actually one of their worst :/

Stigmatized has been my favourite song for about 4 years or so now, such a beautiful song :')

Words cannot describe how unfair I find it that she's fought tooth and nail to release two albums that have been critically acclaimed but sold a pittance; I love her music and really, really hope she releases a 3rd album some day.. :(

I only know of Opeth and Dreamtheatre but aren't they virtually worshipped by fans and the people reviewing their albums? Sure they are not known on a mainstream level but then it's not commercial music. That's hardly being underrated.

Good bands though.

Dead Or Alive - Overshaddowed greatly by Boy George and Culture Cub. They have releaed far better songs then You Spin Me Round.

Aqua - Also if not one of the best europop bands of all time. Written so clever lyrics from some of the best Danish songwriters ever.

Janet was MASSIVE in the late 80s/early 90s. :conf2:
can't see why though. The only track I remember liking by her was "All For You".

Very little popular music is underrated if truth be told. Rock critics tend to be very undiscriminating and will only write a poor review once in a blue moon.

If not underrated, then Kitchens of Distinction slipped under the radar to say the very least. Their albums and singles sold appallingly. Maybe it was because the shoegaze scene died down a little bit when they started recording, but they are easily in the same league as the more celebrated Cocteau Twins, Echo & the Bunnymen and the Smiths.

Good bands though.

I wouldn't say worshipped at all.
People just respect their skill and creativity.
Plus they hardly have any fans in comparison to other metal bands.
Some people probably won't even listen to DT anymore, as their drummer (One of the best drummers ever) left them. A huge loss to their music, their replacement has big shoes to fill in.
