I think I've got a virus on my laptop, and I really cba deleting it manually. I can remember when I got one on my old computer I just sent my computers memory back in time a few weeks, but I've forgot how I done that now. So does anyone know how to do it? Or know what it's called?

System Restore?
If you're on Vista or Windows 7 type it in on the search bar it should find it.
System restore.. Go into control panel

I used system restore once to get rid of some trojan I had a while back and it didnt work...doesnt work for everything.
Depending on what the virus is, it might be safer to mess around and do it properly :/

But system restore is so much easier :(
Don't even know where I have got this virus from, I've only been on about 3 sites in the last few days. And loads of others keep tryna get me aswell, keep getting notifications off my firewall every 15 mins or so.

It might work, probably will...
Its only happened once that sstem restore didnt work, but that was for a really horrible trojan. I ended up having to actually take my computer to get fixed from that...it shut my computer down whenever I opened my anti virus D:

System restore will only remove the symptoms of a virus if the file(s) that have been infected has been altered according to the restore records. It doesnt remove viruses so the virus could still be on the computer waiting to be reactivated.
When using system restore it can also remove other programs settings and installations you have installed or changed since the restore you use
You are better off using either malwarebytes or Trend housecall to remotely remove it.

Right.
I put system restore on, went to bed, 3 hours later it was still running so I just cancelled it. The virus thing is Antimalware Doctor, which tried to trick me a few times into thinking it was trying to stop a virus. Luckily I am very smart.
Anyway, I searched on Google and all the recommended ways on there haven't worked, so I've downloaded some Stopzilla thing.

you mean the hard drive? If you have inserted a memory card(SD) in a slot it should be easily removed.

Depends, as I said before I had one months ago that turned my computer off whenever I tried to do anything about it. Sometimes they can be quite clever :/

I haven't put one in myself I need the original that every laptop just has installed in it when you get it

If you have the windows startup/install disc, stick it in and switch the laptop on, press F8 as it switches up then reinstall windows.
Chances are it wont over write saved data, it overwrites windows on itself.
You will need to reinstall most of the other programs you use on it, then when you get back on the net either instal a decent anti virus program, or use an online virus scanner regularly.
Vicky.

I had norton antivirus then...before my trial ran out.
Everytime I tried to put the virus scan on, it came up with an error message then shut the whole thing down. Tried downloading other antiviruses too and that didnt work either. Luckily it was my PC though and not my laptop

Go to a PC help forum and theyll talk you through the process of fixing the problem.
I had an infection recently that was a serious one. Could have been stealing all my info and email contents. It was highly recommended by an expert that I did a complete re-install of windows 7. He said he could help me clear up the infection but I could not be certain it had gone totally.
So I did a clean re-install which totally wipes your hard drive clean(killing any viruses) then re-installs win7 as new. If you still have your windows re-install disc you should do this. Or borrow one from elsewhere...or get a pirate copy.

any files you have on your laptop are stored on the hard drive...not a memory card.

Is the windows install disk one that you get with your laptop or is it one of them ones that you have to copy to disks yourself when you first start your laptop up for the first time?

sometimes they give you a re-install disc. Othertimes you have to create your own with a program on the laptop using blank dvd discs.
Locke.
08-12-2010, 09:58 PM
I know I created my own on my PC when I first got that, but don't think I did with my laptop. Would the PC ones work for my laptop?
Think the PC is a XP and Laptop is a vista

Try the ones you make yourself first, they are a re set of recovery discs. If it doesnt work after using those you can use the original windows disc to rei

I would also suggest you change all passwords to your emails and other important places where you store personal info. They may have stolen your passwords especially if you have them stored automatically on your laptop. Which means they will have access to all your accounts.
But don't change them until you're on a cleaned up computer.

Have you tried C Cleaner? Dowload and run it. It'll find crap

Reminds me, I need to run mine....
Only thing is you'll need to relog into sites you use again (if you have them to stay logged in that is)

That cleans up all excess files that clog up your computer and slow it down. But its not really effective at finding viruses. Especially sophisticated ones.
and nobody should keep their important passwords stored in firefox etc. Never choose to keep your email passwords permanently logged in. Forum passwords are ok but not any that lead to personal info.

I leave most of it to my OH. He knows his stuff so I get him to check all the gubbins every so often :joker: But no, I don't leave my stuff logged in.
