View Full Version : Do you like Brussels Sprouts?

Jessica.

The festive season is upon us and many people have these on Christmas day, I know lots of people dislike Brussels Sprouts, I don't understand why, I think many people say they don't like them just to follow the crowd because the vegetables are notorious for being disliked. I love them, I think they have magnificent flavour and texture, they're healthy too.

I hate them.. I even gag at the sight of them. SOme people have more taste buds than others and can taste the bitter chemical in them.. If you are one of these people, you won't like broccolli or cabbage either. ( I don't!)

:bored:
You don't have "more tastebuds".
Whatever cooking method is employed, overcooking is to be avoided. Overcooking releases the glucosinolate sinigrin, which has a sulfurous odor. The odor is the reason many people profess to dislike Brussels sprouts, if they've only tried them overcooked with the accompanying sulfurous taste and smell. Generally 6–7 minutes boiled or steamed is enough to cook them thoroughly, without overcooking and releasing the sinigrin.

Erm,yes you do have "more tastebuds"

"Although most of us are born with 10,000 taste buds, some
of us --around 25%--are born with more. These so-called
"supertasters" can have as many as 20,000 to 25,000 taste
buds.

For supertasters, taste is more vivid. Salt is saltier, sweet is
sweeter, bitter is more bitter, spicy is spicer."

"The scientists say that we can be divided into non-tasters, medium-tasters and super-tasters, and that the latter appear to have a higher density of taste buds than the other two groups. It is the super-tasters among us who steadfastly protest their dislike of sprouts, and quite often do not enjoy green tea, coffee, grapefruit juice and other cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli, all of which share bitter-tasting undertones. The medium-tasters are those who do not like sprouts much, but manage to tolerate them on their one and only annual exposure at Christmas lunch. Non-tasters tuck in with gay abandon."

Official? What are you talking about? It's a scientifically proven fact!

And incidentally.. those quotes weren't t from a "silly blog", one was taken from an article in the Sunday Times

http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/diet_and_fitness/article5370265.ece

The other from a health and nutrition website

I hate them. They always taste of chemicals. I can only bear to eat them when they are doused in some kind of sauce like gravy and even thats a stretch.

I'm just happy that when I have Christmas dinner my Aunt leaves the putrid things as an option instead of dumping them on my plate so I have to eat them. :bored:

You speak my language. The smell of any of those three things makes me gag, I can eat broccoli and cabbage if I'm eating them with something that can mask the taste (potatoes, meat, sauces) but brussel sprouts I just can't do at all...

:amazed: Bizarre flashback! I think my mum used to mash mine too! She used to also include them in her veg soup (which she used to have to liquidise for me as I refused to eat any veg pieces) and tell me that there was no sprouts in it, but I could taste them a mile off! Oh it's all coming back to me now!

Lol.. I never really eat any either. The only thing I will eat is parsnips roasted in honey. I do however put veg on my own plate every night but althoug I don't often make faces out of it any more, I do just move it about a bit then hide some under something else so my plate looks a bit better :D

As soon as I saw them on my plate that Christmas I was like "NO WAY am I eating those!!" then she was like "One sec you might like them mashed with some butter :)". I tried 'em like that and was like "-.- they are still disgusting Mum."

My Dad tried to put broccoli in shepherds pie once, thinking I wouldn't notice. It turned all the mash green :bored:
