Never even heard of bread sauce
Never even heard of bread sauce
Funnily enough, I was talking (for probably longer than is socially acceptable) about bread sauce the other night. My American brother in law had never heard of it when he first came over here and I told him it was a Scottish thing but my Geordie friend says I'm talking pish.. that it's a British thing. I know loads of Brits that have never heard of it though :conf:
Ive never heard of it either.

How I make it is, simmer some milk for 20 minutes with a whole onion in, then tear up some bread and add it until all the milk is soaked up.

Well that sounds a bit better than what I thoughtyou had done..Ithought you had put a bowl of warm milk on the table with some bread flung in it..
It's supposed to be fine bread crumbs you use, not torn up bread, but yeah the onion in milk is right.
Here is a recipe actually..

A bread sauce is a warm or cold sauce thickened with bread. It is a savoury sauce served with a main meal.
Sole survivor of the medieval bread-thickened sauces, the traditional British bread sauce is made with milk, butter or cream, and bread crumbs, flavoured with onion, salt, cloves, pepper and bay leaf, with the fat from roasting often added too. It typically accompanies domestic fowl such as turkey or chicken . The use of slightly stale bread is optimal, making it an economical way of using up leftover bread. The sauce is easy to make and uses readily available ingredients.
It's lush!!

I don't know, my mum has always done it with torn up pieces of bread, it makes it more chunky.
