View Full Version : What do you think changed with The Simpsons?

I think we all agree it's not a touch on what it used to be. Watched the ep where Homer saves the plant today, it soooo different (and better). The old ones always seem to have some moral undertone to them, which is always quite good, and better less obvious jokes. Seems the new ones try to be as wacky and random as possible, and don't really go anywhere. Guess it could be time and all that, but seems they lacked in effort too, just seems something is missing from them.

I grew up
i think the main thing is when you get a bit older you start watching family guy, which the simpsons is no match for.
A new generation of writers came in who grew up with the original episodes. Hence most of their current output is heavily self indulgent and touching on self parody. Before when Snake done a crime, or Otto done some drugs, or Chief Wigum was a dumbass it was because those characters were being developed and it was done every now and then and done smart. Nowdays they will put Snake in a scene abruptly just to have him there and do his Snake crime bit. That's the difference. Look at the new title sequence. They are trying to put too much in and it comes off as garish.
They are also exchanging genuine emotion and point making for Family Guy style randomized trash writing. Futurama is doing the same thing right now. It's just jokes being fired at rapid pace missing most of their targets because you eventually get tired of holding up the bullseye.
It's still a good show, but compare it to any of the season 4 - 10 stuff. Last Exit To Springfield is probably the funniest half hour ever broadcast on telly.

Futurama > Simpsons > Family Guy imo, although all the new epiosdes of the three shows are worse than the older ones for the most part

He's had some classic quotes
Leela: You know, Zapp, someone ought to teach you a lesson.
Captain Zapp Brannigan: If it's a lesson in love, watch out. I suffer from a very sexy learning disability. What did I call it, Kiff?
Kif Kroker: Ugh... sexlexia

I still like it.
Yeah, it's not a patch on the earlier series but I still find it fairly funny. Probably prefer it to Family Guy tbh.

It was great in the 90s cos it was fresher and the stories weren't so thin. Seasons 5-9 were the best but it just kind of went downhill after that. There came a time when I could only really enjoy the Halloween eps but now I can't even bare them either. :(

It began to borrow from the Family Guy idea of obvious pop culture references. Plus...I genuinely think it's exhausted. How many plot lines can you draw from a family?

They try too hard now, the 'jokes' aren't funny and natural like they used to be. I hate watching new episodes.

I still watch it, although I agree it isn't as good as it was.
I don't get why people say family guy is funnier, I watch it, but I don't really find it funny :/ the only time i properly laughed at it, was when stewie said "We're not sinking, we're crashiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing"

It's been on for over twenty years. Not only have they probably done every plot possible without ageing the characters, but the TV industry has changed over two decades so The Simpsons does with it.
Although I like the movie. It's better if you don't compare it with the original series, just take it as a one off movie.
