Anne Hathaway cast as Catwoman in the new Batman film AND Tom Hardy's playing Bane

Anne Hathaway has won the role of Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman, in The Dark Knight Rises.

It was reported last week that the forthcoming movie was screen testing a number of actresses for two lead parts. Keira Knightley and Jessica Biel were also apparently in the running.

Director Christopher Nolan said: "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story."

Studio Warner Bros further confirmed that Inception actor Tom Hardy will play Bane in Nolan's next Batman movie.

The helmer added of Hardy: "I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies."

The Dark Knight Rises is scheduled to arrive in US cinemas on July 20, 2012.

Michelle Pfeiffer played Catwoman in 1992's Batman Returns. Halle Berry portrayed the role in the 2004 film Catwoman.

Nobody can beat Michelle Pfeiffer's version. But I think anyone could pretty much do a better job than Halle Berry. She proved that you might look good in a catsuit but it doesn't mean your forgiven for bad acting.

Catwoman's not the main villain, it's apparently a comic book villain called Hugo Strange.

I think she'll surprise people, everyone thought Heath Ledger was a terrible choice when he was announced as the Joker and look how well that turned out.

I just read that Tom Hardy's been confirmed to play Bane, which is quite intriguing given that the character's 'Hulk'ness doesn't really mesh well with a more realistic Batman film.

she's a bit weak looking to be a strong superhero villain. Pale and fragile. She certainly needs to ramp up her sexy factor for the role.
