Inspired by a debate on this morning's Wright Stuff!

So which would you rather be? Talented or Popular?

And why?

Mmm well I am neither of these 2 things but I clicked Talented. People can be fickle and like you one day but hate you the next. With most talents you will probably always have that talent? Unless you are a good singer but then one day you can't sing anymore

I mean with talent you will be remember mainly for your talent. Rather than a forced character of yourself to make yourself more likeable. Take Oasis for example. I love Oasis, the first thing that pops into my head about them is their music. However some people don't like Noel or Liam Gallagher because they could appear "arrogant".

To be fair.. Simon Cowell is not even talented. He's just popular.

Only snobs could class Noel and Liam as arrogant :bored:

Hmm.. I actually don't know! I'm fairly untalented.. no scrap that, I'm completely untalented and have always been envious of skilled artists and fantabulous dancers..

Popularity?.. hmmm.. hmmm.. I've always always been the type who genuinely doesn't give a flying feck what people think of me; I am who I am and if you like me great, if you don't then that's great too! However, I do think it''s important to have friends and witout bigging myself up too much, I do in general seem to be likeable...

So after all that, I still don't know what I'd rather be :conf:

I think maybe popular as popularity is going to encourage relationships/friendships whereas being able to dance my ass off and people think I'm a right twat could mean a pretty lonely existense!

SO yeahh.. popularity!

I don't. I find them funny. Especially the one who had a go at the Brit Awards. I was thinking of an example Joe Joe. I was trying to think of the majority of the public. I could be wrong though!

I know you don't  People who like them often don't

The Gallaghers know they are talented and brought about the best ever group in the UK,its not arrogance to boast of success and people confuse pride in their achievements with arrogance which are 2 different things.

I chose I would rather be talented or have a talent than just be popular but what inevitably happens is to be talented brings popularity of varying degrees as well.
I think though overall, I would just rather be likeable and be liked for being me,that's hard enough to achieve.

Well being liked and having a great personality is a talent. Probably the best talent you could ever have. Tons of people are not gonna show up at your funeral because you can play the flute brilliantly or run 100 metres in 10 secs.

talented earns respect

popular earns enemies

I's rather be popular and unpopular, to blindly believe I'm genuinely talented and make the most money i could possibly make by launching autobiographies, releasing singles and having my own reality show.

Talented... because generally I dislike people so couldn't give a stuff about popularity.

Talented. Invariably most artists have to prositute their priciples for popularity which just would not sit well with me. All the acclaim and praise would mean nothing cuz I'd know what I had to do to get it.

Shouldnt you be more specific about what you are talented at?

Some talents are useless. Popularity will always get you far in life.

Talented, couldnt give a toss about popularity, infact the general bunch of 'popular' kids are a bunch of twats and Id hate to be 1 of them!

Like me own bunch of mates, and a talent to show off would be cool. :)

If almost anyone else acted in the manner that Noel and Liam do, Liam inparticular, i'd say they are arrogant but cause it's Noel and Liam i just think they're cool as ****!

I'd rather be popular. If I was super-rich and successful - and hopefully stupid - I wouldn't care about being talented.

If I was talented and unappreciated I might become bitter.

I vote: Popular and die happy.

Talented. Despise being the centre of attention and like my own space too much to have people by all the time or suchlike

Talented.

I couldn't give a flying **** what people think of me to be honest and I'd get far more enjoyment writing songs and playing guitar, for example, on my own than I would not being able to do anything in particular with a bunch of people who liked me.

Also, to be popular to the masses chances are you're gonna have to change who you are to appeal to different people. I couldn't do that. Either people like me for who I am or don't like me at all.

lostalex

Popular obviously.

Because if yur talented but not popular, you'll go no where. But if yur popular, it doesn't really matter how talented you are, yu'll still go far.

There are a lot of very talented lonely people in this world.

Zippy

why is popular a dirty word here?

most people are popular because they are a likeable person and probably sociable. I don't see why being able to play an instrument or jump 8 metres is better than that.

happiness comes from how you relate to people ultimately.

Popularity can come from talent too, though. I hate threads like these because it's a narrow question that causes people to have narrow views.

Best case scenario is to be talented which then translates into popularity, IMO. Jordan is popular but who gives a ****, like.

Also, plenty of popular people are utter *****. Plenty just appeal to a large base of lowest common denominator. I hate this idea that they must posess some amazing 'talent' of being naturally likeable.

well yeah thats what I thought.

depends what youre talented at or why you're popular. They're not mutually exclusive.

plus I think good social skills are a huge talent. Not everybody has them.

Not everyone has three testicles either. Having that other freeloader isin't a talent though.

I'm definately not agreeing with that one. Good social skills is about as much of a 'talent' as being able to stay awake for a long time.
