Nope its not weird. Although I dont do either, I understand some of the reasoning behind it.
Keeps carpets cleaner, longer and reduces the amounts of pollutants brought into the home on shoes.

I never wear shoes in the house anyway but I people can take their shoes off in our house if they want. It wouldn't bother me. :/

My guests can vomit on the carpet and I couldnt care less. But I have a japanese friend who always insists in taking her shoes off when she comes to my house.
Being aware of how neurtic I am, if someone would ask me to take my shoes off when I go to their houses, I would be asking myself and my closest friends if I am hygienic enough and if I gave people the impression that I'm disgusting, repulsive or repugnant.

I find it's polite to ask the house owner if they want you to remove your shoes

I never ask but no one wears shoes in my house so most people tend to take them off. I always take them off when I go to someone's elses house, well I mean friends and that.

People take their shoes off, why would we want **** and mud all over the house from someones shoes....
I find it weird to take your shoes off. I never think to unless I'm asked. To me, that's like removing your shirt or trousers. Luckily I only know people who couldn't give a **** what their carpet looked like.

Em, I tend to take mine off when I go round to people's houses, avoid muddying their floors; although if I'm just going round for an hour then I'd just keep them on. Not really fussed either way, just a habit I picked up in childhood and have kept up with ever since.

I just copy my mate, if they have or take their shoes off i will too, if they have or keep them on so will i. And if someone comes round to mines it's up to them what they do, i don't tell them to take them off or keep them on.

I like to think people can pretty much suit themselves when they come to my house.
