Just started reading 'All the Light We Cannot See' by Anthony Doerr... loving it, rarely steam through books (I have an annoying tendency to drag them out over a month or more) but am already halfway through after 2 days  Great settings and characters.

2 years later I've finally gotten around to reading it in full, just finished earlier this evening. Brilliant book, looking forward to starting The Subtle Knife. The final few chapters especially were addictive. I do wish I didn't already know how it ended but that didn't dampen the enjoyment of reading it for the first time.

Just finished The Subtle Knife (God I'm becoming a slow reader). Brilliant once again and some great plot twists that genuinely caught me off guard which made up for my prior knowledge of the twists in Northern Lights

I got it for Christmas as a gift from my grandma so I'm really looking forward to being able to jump right in once I've read The Amber Spyglass. Heard only good things.

Just started reading 'All the Light We Cannot See' by Anthony Doerr... loving it, rarely steam through books (I have an annoying tendency to drag them out over a month or more) but am already halfway through after 2 days  Great settings and characters.

Since this (probably my favourite book of all time, if not a close 2nd/3rd) I've read:

- "About Grace" by the same author (Anthony Doerr). Found the protagonist extremely irritating and one of the least relatable/human ARSEHOLES I've ever read but at the same time the story was pretty rich and odd.
- "The Sympathizer" by Viet Thanh Nguyen. I've been trying to steam through the books that've won Pulitzer prizes because the couple I'd already read were terrific - this wasn't any different. A novel about espionage, the Vietnamese revolution, dual citizenship and never quite belonging, it's pretty explosive and moving.
- "Days Without End" by Sebastian Barry. A very sweet and strange gay love story set in the American civil war, with many deeply loveable characters.
- "Giovanni's Room" by James Baldwin. Very short and tragic story, quite full of histrionics and dark characters, but enjoyed it a lot.

And am now making a headstart on:
- "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. Well it's about time really given me and this forum  Never knew anything about the case it portrays but it's just written so fascinatingly and whilst I can see why it received such notoriety and scandal upon publishing, it's interesting how much it's noticeably changed fiction and journalism alike since it just seems so matter-of-fact to the modern reader.
- "The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye" by David Lagercrantz - enjoyed his first take on the Millenium trilogy continuation, hopefully I enjoy his second.

Did you watch the TV show?

I just finished John Grisham's The Reckoning, I'd give it a 5/10

It was well written but the story was pretty thin, the whole middle section of the book, the war story was totally unnecessary to the main story I thought, I'm not sure if it was there to somehow explain Pete Bannings mindset or to somehow justify what he did but it didn't work for me. Basically he murdered "the wrong guy", I have that in quotes because even if he was the right guy it doesn't in anyway justify him being murdered. pete murdered a guy who had an affair with his wife, which technically wasn't even an affair for her because pete's was presumed dead at the time, not only that he made her go crazy and had her committed.

The book was depressing as **** as well with no light at all in it

I've read two books lately, Ring by Koji Suzuki and Penpal by Dathan Auerbach.

It was interesting to read the original Ring, which felt a lot more science fiction-esque than the ghost stories of the films, but I did have a massive issue with it that really prevented me from enjoying it. in the original book, instead of a reporter and her ex-husband investigating the tape, it's a reporter and a friend from school and his friend, it turns out, is a serial rapist that gloats about his crimes to the main character and the main character does nothing about it, in fact at one point, he invites the bastard into the home he shares with his wife and daughter and it's just repugnant. THEN, when the rapist dies, we get forcefed a redemption arc where we get told he lied about raping women because he was a virgin and he ends up saving the day and I'm just nonplussed by the whole thing. It's annoying because it completely ruined the book for me when the core story and it's differences to the story we all know are quite fascinating. Like, there's no ghosts coming out of the TV this time, Sadako/Samara doesn't actually appear at all, and everything that happens has nothing to do with ghosts but her psychic powers going out of control in death.

Penpal was better and had some straight up eerie moments that have stuck with me, but the writing is so formal, stiff and long winded that the author somehow made a 200 page book feel too long, which is a real shame because the story itself is excellent, but the writing is just.... frigid.

Though I bought it a few weeks back, I'm just now starting up on The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis, about a group of nihilistic teens who get caught up in the sinister machinations of a brutal serial killer who's menacing the streets of '80s LA. That's a very broad and basic summary that probably doesn't do justice to the full scope of the story, but it's a serviceable one all the same. Thus far it's your basic Ellis fare, i.e., a group of physically perfect, bisexually promiscuous teenagers who lead the sort of carefree and materially rich but emotionally soulless lives that many of us probably half-wish we could have lived when we were teenagers lol. But that's not a slight against it. I'm enjoying it immensely with its almost obscene litany of '80s pop culture references.

Imagine losing the most important ten years of your life …

Alice is twenty-nine. She adores sleep, chocolate, and her ramshackle new house. She’s newly married to the wonderful Nick and is pregnant with her first baby.

There’s just one problem.
All that was ten years ago …

Alice has slipped in a step aerobics class, hit her head and lost a decade. Now she’s a grown-up, bossy mother of three in the middle of a nasty divorce and her beloved sister Elisabeth isn’t speaking to her. This is her life but not as she knows it.

Clearly Alice has made some terrible mistakes.
Just how much can happen in a decade?

Can she ever get back to the woman she used to be?

The one on Netflix? Yeah I did which is why I had higher expectations for the book. It’s not the same story as the series and the only thing that is the same are the main characters names and Hill House itself.

Ammi I think you might like this one I just started, it's a kind of a sliding doors type idea

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81EGR9SbmdL._UF350,350_QL80_.jpg

The extraordinary novel that asks: Can a name change the course of a life?

In the wake of a catastrophic storm, Cora sets off with her nine-year-old daughter, Maia, to register her son's birth. Her husband, Gordon, a local doctor, respected in the community but a terrifying and controlling presence at home, intends for her to name the infant after him. But when the registrar asks what she'd like to call the child, Cora hesitates...

Spanning thirty-five years, what follows are three alternate and alternating versions of Cora's and her young son's lives, shaped by her choice of name. In richly layered prose, The Names explores the painful ripple effects of domestic abuse, the messy ties of family, and the possibilities of autonomy and healing.

With exceptional sensitivity and depth, Knapp draws us into the story of one family, told through a prism of what-ifs, causing us to consider the "one . . . precious life" we are given. The book’s brilliantly imaginative structure, propulsive storytelling, and emotional, gut-wrenching power are certain to make The Names a modern classic.

When a word in Irish starts with S it depends which vowel comes afterwards as to whether it makes a ss sound or a sh sound, generally speaking E & I, the narrow vowels get the sh sound like in Silbhe and the Broad vowels A, O & U get the ss sound like Saoirse(Seersha which actually has the sh sound at the end lol)

Hiding her own dark past in plain sight, a TV reporter is determined to uncover the truth behind a gruesome murder decades after the investigation was abandoned. But TWENTY YEARS LATER, to understand the present, you need to listen to the past…

Avery Mason, host of American Events, knows the subjects that grab a TV audience’s attention. Her latest story—a murder mystery laced with kinky sex, tragedy, and betrayal—is guaranteed to be ratings gold. New DNA technology has allowed the New York medical examiner’s office to make its first successful identification of a 9/11 victim in years. The twist: the victim, Victoria Ford, had been accused of the gruesome murder of her married lover. In a chilling last phone call to her sister, Victoria begged her to prove her innocence.

Emma Kind has waited twenty years to put her sister to rest, but closure won’t be complete until she can clear Victoria’s name. Alone she’s had no luck, but she’s convinced that Avery’s connections and fame will help. Avery, hoping to negotiate a more lucrative network contract, goes into investigative overdrive. Victoria had been having an affair with a successful novelist, found hanging from the balcony of his Catskills mansion. The rope, the bedroom, and the entire crime scene was covered in Victoria’s DNA.

But the twisted puzzle of Victoria’s private life is just the beginning. And what Avery doesn't realize is that there are other players in the game who are interested in Avery’s own secret past—one she has kept hidden from both the network executives and her television audience. A secret she thought was dead and buried . . .

Accused of a brutal murder, Victoria Ford made a final chilling call from the North Tower on the morning of 9/11. Twenty years ago, no one listened. Today, you will.
