View Full Version : The Book Group [Starting up again]

Benjamin

I had an idea and I believe somebody else mentioned it also, that we could start our own little book group.

The idea is that 6 or 7 of us get to choose a book one at a time, once a week, that we all read and discuss on here?

Don't know if this would work, but could be fun?

In the group:

Benjamin
Mokka
Eoin
Jessica
Tom
Natalie
GypsyGoth

Do we get to burn books? :amazed:

Benjamin

Do we get to burn books? :amazed:

Not literally ;). We can discuss/disect them and share our opinions on the book chosen by the person that particular week. :)

It'd be cool to get 7 very different members who all read very different things and discuss a weird and wide variety of stuff, be it Mills and Boon *shudders* or something more challenging to read.

Hmm... it depends on the book I guess.

Benjamin

Hmm... it depends on the book I guess.

Well we'd all get to choose one book at some point that we all have to read and discuss, that way we all get to vary our reading and extend it and get our choice of what the group reads.

Benjamin
18-02-2011, 01:56 AM
*hopes whoever joins the book group doesn't pick Mills and Boon*

Cool. Obviously we only have a week to read the book, so we can't choose anything massive like 'War and Peace'.

Hopefully we'll get 6 or 7 of us interested in this. :)

Lee.
18-02-2011, 02:01 AM
Actually, I've just been thinking.. I'm all like "oh I'll read anything". That's actually bull****! I'll read anything that interests me by page 1.. if I'm bored or disinterested by then, then it's over!
I like autobiographies, historical fiction and crime/thrillers. I don't mind the odd trashy novel.. but make me read arty farty **** and Ima going to cut you.. (missingyou Scott) :D

Niamh.
18-02-2011, 10:34 AM
I'd be interested but I've only just started a new book now, unless you all want to start reading that lol

Can't we all just read Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy over and over?

Anyway this is a nice idea but I simply can't handle reading other peoples choices. I'm not someone who will read through any old book just to discuss it with some strangers.

I'll take part in the sense that if I spot a book I may like I'll read and discuss it (if it's available to me at the time) but I couldn't guarantee I'd read everything nor nominate a book

Started it again last night. Very strange re-reading a book after just a few weeks but it's already proving quite interesting to do so. Not sure how long I'll be as I'm reading an autobiog too. Are we discussing once everyones finished or speaking in spoilers about it as we read?

Benjamin
10-03-2011, 11:54 PM
Speak in spoilers would be ok I reckon if you state which chapter it is. How does everyone else feel about that?

GypsyGoth

ok, I've read the first 3 chapters now

hhhmmmm, so far the fact that every second line is describing how good looking everyone is("my husband is dead but look how shiny my hair is", is annoying. and yes Claudia I too would like to kill Laura!

I'm on to chapter 21 now

I'm getting into it now, like Kerry said it is a bit far fetched, like for example Stan attacking and almost raping Laura, what does she do? ..........nothing, call the police? No. Tell her sister who is dating him? No. I don't see the logic there at all, I mean she thinks it's better to let her fragile sister, who has previously been the victim of violence and rape with a violent man and a potential rapists, rather than hurt her feelings??? I don't get it. Also, Laura isn't annoying me that much anymore, Serita her best friend really annoys me now instead, I'd love to punch her. And that line they keep saying through the book really annoys me, "You're a good friend" "The Best" lol. right, I sound like I hate the book, but I actually don't, yeah, it's a tad far fetched and the whole storyline is a bit obvious (I think) but at the same time I'm still curious to know whether or not my suspicions are correct. So, I'm just going with it and enjoying the ride!

Lee.

Ok, I've finished it (is anyone else even reading it???)

ok, well, I'll steal Kerrys phrase one more time - very, very far fetched sums it all up really, especially the bit about James aborting the baby and making Mary pregnant again and her having the baby 2 months late without her realising lmao. Also, that surgeon who changed Davids face hahaha they need to employ him asap for people who really need it like burn victims etc! anyway, It was still enjoyable, I did believe it was Mary all along so it had a bit of a surprise element after all! Over all I'd rate it 5/10

I'd stretch to 6/10 at best. It's quite a silly book though keeps you wondering I suppose

oh also :

The bit about Stan witnessing his fathers murder, he was 10 years old but he used to sneak into his fathers office to play..........at the college.............how did he get there?..........shouldn't he have been at school?........and if not wouldn't his mother be wondering where he was? and after his father was shot, how did he sneak away without anyone noticing?

 thoughts so far?

I find it too unbelievable, the fantasy books I usually read are far more likely to happen than this, anyway having said that I'm sorta enjoying it, it's like watching a badly acted movie.

The idea that someone can change their face and play for the same team is preposterous, I mean wouldn't he have the exact same body, wouldn't someone just be able to compare a picture of him now to one before he died, and don't those guys all shower in the nude with each other after they play.

And that part where the bank manager realised that David was supposedly dead when he carried out the money transaction. Surely the bank guy would have called the police straight away. I mean it became a criminal fraud once he realize he gave out money from someone's account when they were supposedly dead.

Also not only do I hate Laura, I now hate her whole bloody family.

And the way TC has all this info about Stan (the scumbag brother) and he doesn't tell Laura until after he has wormed his way into their lives, what type of friend would do such a thing.

There are other things that have been bugging me, but my fingers are getting tired typing.

And I'm just at chapter 16, Laura is about to head back to Australia. I'm going to read more tonight :amazed:

my thoughts exactly.............I would get into it with you but I'm not quite sure what exactly has happened yet where you are in the book. but yeah, fantasy books are one thing but when it's supposed to be a book about real life people unbelievable stuff like you just mentioned becomes more unacceptable!

Finished reading it last night.

On the plus side I didn't hate it all. However some of it was insanely far fetched, it was like the author didn't do any research. And the you're brother and sister and then you're not brother was ridiculous.

I just wish a better editor read the book before it was published, as it could have been improved a lot.

It was completely ridiculous, but I found it easy reading and I suppose it did keep me intrigued. :)

His other books are way better though!

I would, I was one of the only ones who read the book last time though :fist:

I'm off on holiday on Thursday though and have a few books already lined up, if you decide on one before before Thursday I'll try to pick that up

I'm pretty sure I read the book last time, if it was about some basketball player who changes his dna, or something like that, and it was a love story, then I did. If there was one after that, then I didn't

No :idc:

:D  I'm going to be pretty busy next week and I'm not sure how long it's gonna last. But I will find the time if possible.
