This always makes interesting discussion - what would you do to lower the deficit (the gap between what we spend each year, and the money we raise through taxes, VAT etc) and get rid of some of this countries debt (the money we owe over countries)
Currently -
Britains Debt - £889.1 billion
Current Deficit - £78.3 billion (money we need to equal what we spend each year)
So our job is to argue what we would cut, or do, to get rid of these debts. If you don't like someones ideas, argue against it!

In an ideal world...
Areas of Excellence
Yes it may sound like some ****ted up education policy by New Labour but I would try to recreate 'areas of excellence' across England.
South West - Leisure
I would invest money into tourism for the very south west - Cornwall area of Britain, marketing it strongly as an idylic area and lifestyle for those who live in western Europe who are over 50. Hopefully, this will create some kind of property boom - many of the current properties owned by those living in outer city areas of cornwall sell their 'holiday homes' to western europeans. Of course, this is going to raise money through small taxes on property selling, and will give those who have sold the homes on average £300,00 to invest elsewhere. The money from those buying the homes is coming from western Europe - adding money to our economy.
South East - Business
I would basically keep a similar plan here, working on the existing infrustructure in overseas trade.
Midlands - Educational Excellence
I would try and invest in some of education excellence centres - basically Universities, which are ran by the private sector (not the government). These will be heavily trade based, and will be open simply on merit, rather than on the poorness/richness of your background. Alot of emphasis here is put on Engineering, with alot of work alongside leading companies already existing. A huge amount of emphasis is placed on students from Europe coming here to study - again encouraging a short term system of money coming in. However, as the Universities will be ran by the private sector overseas students will be charged treble the average amount of fees to study here, hopefully investing more overseas money into our research.
North England - Manufacture
Again, hardly original but this area will again have extra emphasis placed on the manufacture industry. Heavier tarrifs will be introduced on any products - Cars, TV's, Furniture - that come from outside Europe, hopefully encouraging an increase in manufacturing in England itself. Close ties will be made with the 'Educationally Excellent' Midlands to invest found research into British work.
Energy
My plan, and by far, biggest expenditure is green energy for Britain. The policy of 'not on my back door' will have to go. The seven barrage will be introduced, from England to Wales, getting green energy direct from the tides. Wind farms will be introduced in Northern Areas of England and tidal barages along the South and North seas. Existing ideas (which I'm not to sure of) will be implemented, with the plan of a creating a 75% sufficient britain in just 9 years time. Britain will be 90% self sufficient by 2025, and by 2030 we aim to have a energy surplus - making England the leading nation for green technologies, using our energy surplus to fuel our own cars.
This will hopefully save millions, as all new green energy systems will be ran by the government, putting money back into the 'public purse'
Aswell as this, all new public buildings (such as councill houses, offices etc) will have a new heavy emphasis on green technolgy. 'Green Terraces' will be built using the technologies you see on property shows such as Grand Designs - and with more being built, the cost to do so will ultimately be reduced. This will create properties that effectively provide their own energy - but the residents will still have to pay for it.
More to come soon.

I agree with all of these...
also
- Prosecute illegal tax evaders like Vodafone and Topshop
- As for those evading taxes legally, draft legislation to stop them
- Raise corporation tax and not just capital gains tax
- Shut down Trident
- Withdraw from Afghanistan
- Scrap the sanctions on ESA and Incapacity Benefit claimants, which is bound to cost more in appeals fees and medical examinations than any bogus scroungewrs would have.

I guess the game part was where you use your imagination to think of garbage that would be good ideally. But everyone obviously want's to stick to idylistic stuff. And the title hopefully would 'sell out' the topic, and everyone would say stuff. But obviously not :bawling:
Anyway; here is a game of it where you choose what you get rid of -

Just a couple or three.
South West.
What makes you think an artifically created property boom will produce demand from consumers in Western Europe? Think Ireland.
Midlands.
Increasing fees for overseas students too much may reduce the amount of overseas students willing to pay.
North England
Increasing tariffs on non EU imports will break certain trade agreements and you have nothing to stop the countries involved reciprocating by imposing tariffs on our exports. Thereby further reducing what little exports we already have to those areas.
Also increased tariffs will have a knock on effect to the consumer, items from those places will be more expensive as will components imported from those areas we use in production of our own consumables.
Why regionalise the various sectors? Does it mean universities in Scotland, the North and South of England etc will be disadvantaged etc?
Quite like the energy propositions unfortunately I dont think people who follow the NIMBY trend will just lie down and not fight any development they dont like, think middle class trendies becoming tree hugging protestors.

I see your argument, my idea however is rather than build extensively (some new builds will be made) I plan to use the already existing infrastructure. Instead of these properties being mainly owned and occupied by British holiday makers who live in the south east, and infrequently used throughout the year, I want the existing properties to be used by western europeans mainly. Either through rent or ownership. The idea is that this will pool in alot of external money into this area, rather than money that comes from internal sources.
Midlands.

I see your arguments, but I suppose a equal amount will have to be made - slightly more than the existing costs, but not to an extent that it is non profitable.

I understand the flaws in this ideology, and again research will have to be carried out on how this will be carried out, ensuring strong foreign relations and trade agreements remain, that do benefit us.
I also see your arguments amount an increased cost to the consumer - and the fact with that is going to be 'tough'. The idea is that we manufacture products that aren't 100% neccesary for survival, such as televisions, cars and furniture. Again, the idea behind this is that the manufacturing is mainly for consumption in England, and less emphasis on exports abroad. This way it should invest more into our economy without overly impacting the global system.
The idea behind regionalising the sectors is to create, as I said 'Areas of Excellence' that hopefully will improve the future of Britain, leading in core areas of certain industry. Funding for state run universities will still exist, however, the idea behind a few specialised, no governmental run Universities is that general Universities will have to up their standars of simply fail.
And I can see the environmental opposistion, unfortunately I suppose it is a real life challenge that ruins ideas on paper.

I probably shouldn't comment as I'm Irish  but, I think you may have a problem with the manufacturing centre of excellence. Outside of specialisation, manufacturing has pretty much debunked to the developing world. The tariffs wouldn't be allowed under EU and WTO restrictions. You can't really have it both ways and expect to benefit from a global economy but put a wall up in front of the elements of it that you don't like.
I'm very much in favour of greater harnessing of wind and tidal power - here as well - and cannot understand why there's not a greater push for it. And I'm not coming from an environmental standpoint here, much more from the point of trying to establish some self-sufficiency.

I watched that Sunday Night Show. Tom Felton appeared on it and he came up with something that could get the country out of debt. By introducing "The Robin Hood Tax". In which banks who transfer large amounts of money to other bank firms should be charged a small percentage on that one transaction. Like if they transfers like 20 million or something to another bank.. then like 0.5% of that should be taken and go towards getting this country out of debt!!
Sounds a good plan to me. It's mainly the banks fault who got us into this mess in the first place!
