View Full Version : Martina Cole The Runaway Sky1 Thursdays 9pm
From Sky 1:
Following the success of Martina Cole's The Take, an impressive British cast lines up for Sky 1 HD's second adaptation of the bestselling author's gritty crime novels.
In his first British television role in 15 years, Emmy nominee and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming (right, The Good Wife, X-Men) takes on the flamboyant role of transvestite Desrae. Cumming is joined by Ken Stott (Messiah), Keith Allen (Robin Hood), Jack O'Connell (Skins) and Joanna Vanderham in her debut role. Set in the twilight world of London's Soho and New York, The Runaway is a compelling drama spanning the 1960s and 1970s, following the story of a runaway girl, an outrageous transvestite and an epic love story between childhood sweethearts.
East London kids Cathy Connor (Vanderham) and Eamonn Docherty (O'Connell) dream of a brighter future. But their hopes are shattered when Cathy is sent into care and then compelled to run away and forced to survive on the streets of Soho. Befriended by colourful transvestite Desrae (Cumming), Cathy grows up in the heart of London's underworld, while Eamonn is drawn into a life of crime and ultimately flees to New York. As London's red light district sinks into the sleaze of the 70s, and the IRA, police corruption and industrial strikes dominate the nation's mood, Cathy and Eamonn are drawn back together, only to discover that their past is not far behind. Burn Gorman (Torchwood), Kierston Wareing
(The Take), Max Irons (Dorian Gray) and Mark Womack (Liverpool 1) also star in this unmissable
six-part drama.

I prefer her books to the dramas to be honest, they are gripping stuff.
I've already read the book about 4 times, I read her books over & over  and I agree Arista The Take was amazing! Tom Hardy was perfect for the role of Freddie.

Well since she has Sky1HD

Saw an advert for this after Saturday's Boardwalk Empire and it looks quite good:
News on the production went very quiet soon after the announcement and there were rumours that Martina Cole may have not been happy with parts of the adaptation.
However I am now pleased to have found out that filming is going ahead. The production will be handled by Company Pictures who previously were responsible for The Take which aired last year.
Filming is taking place in South Africa and Alan Cumming, Burn Gorman, Jack O’Connell, Jo Van Der Ham and Max Irons are some of the cast known at the moment.
The drama will air as a six part mini-series on Sky1 in the Spring 2011.
UPDATE: Martina Cole’s The Runaway starts 31st March Sky1 9pm, excellent news!!
UPDATE: There has been huge interest in who is signing the cover version of Love Will Tear Us Apart on the Sky1 promotion trailer for the upcoming mini-series. The singer of Love Will Tear Us Apart is Charlotte Kelly. Sky will not be releasing it as a single though. The original version of the song was by the excellent Joy Division.
Based on the book, this is its synopsis:
When Cathy Connor and Eamonn Docherty are thrown together as children in the East End their fate is sealed. Cathy’s miserable life as a prostitute’s child changes forever when she’s forced into care. The ordeal that follows leaves her with no choice but to run away to Soho, and she learns to survive in the violent heart of London’s underworld. Meanwhile, Eamonn, who fled to New York, has gained a reputation as a ruthless villain. But when their paths cross again, Cathy’s an equal match for Eamonn - and nothing's going to make her run away this time ...
It looks quite interesting :)

I thought it was pretty good, there was a lack of likable characters outside of Alan Cumming's though so it was hard to want to see the romance between Eamonn and Kathy work because he was such a psychopath and she was pretty much a terrible human being.
