Fashion genius, John Galliano, has been sacked by Dior for drunkenly saying he loves Adolf Hitler.

Should Dior have sacked this legend?:wavey:

Thanks for that, em I don't know, I suppose he should really, If you look at it from Diors point of view, not firing him could have been very bad for their business and this comment particularly disgusted me :

It followed the footage posted online allegedly showing Galliano telling a Paris cafe patron: "People like you would be dead today - your mothers, your forefathers would be gassed."

Damning new footage emerged today of John Galliano hurling anti-Semitic abuse at two young women he thought were Jewish. The British fashion designer can be heard saying, "I love Hitler" in the cell-phone film, and ranting, "People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f---ing gassed."

The bombshell video was shot in La Perle -- the same Parisian cafe where the chief designer at Christian Dior was arrested Thursday after allegedly calling another woman "a dirty Jew face" and an "ugly, disgusting *****." He is also alleged to have threatened the woman's boyfriend, saying, "F---ing Asian b-----d, I'll kill you." The couple filed a criminal complaint, accusing the tailor of "causing injury of an anti-Semitic and racist nature""

That ^^ is NOT an opinion, it's a crime

I went to visit there in October and it was the most depressing thing I've ever seen. The man's a dickhead, there's having an opinion and then there's this. If you go up to two women, presume them to be Jewish, and tell them they should be gassed, getting filmed doing so, then it's hardly a surprise when you go and get sacked.

Ahh its cool now, he has apologised, everything in the garden is rosy.

Designer John Galliano, who was sacked by fashion house Dior over alleged racist comments, has broken his silence by saying: "I unreservedly apologise for my behaviour in causing any offence."

....

Galliano said he wanted to "address the personal failure which led to these circumstances and try and earn people's forgiveness". He said he was now "seeking help".

....

In France, making anti-Semitic remarks is punishable by up to six months in prison or a fine of up to 22,500 euro (£19,200).

This tbh.

I'm sure any employer would sack someone for being so gratuitously offensive, especially someone with such a high profile as Galliano. He has brought negative attention onto his employer which could well affect their business. That aside, anyone has a right to their opinion, but they should keep it to themselves if it's going to manifest itself in overt and obnoxious racist remarks deliberately intended to offend and upset another person.

He got exactly what he deserved.

plus if he wants to love Hitler then let him ******ing love Hitler. His mistake was getting drunk and announcing it to the world. And getting sneakily filmed doing so.

I certainly don't love Hitler but he is a fascinating character for sure. And like every other human, far more complex than the simplistic hate labels bestowed on him.

We've all been drunk and said things we've regretted or been slightly embarrassed about, but have you actually read what he said to those women?? That **** isn't drunken banter or a slight slip of the tongue; it's pure, venomous anti-semitism in it's worst form!

well Im sure most famous people hold some view or other that we would find shocking or distasteful. The key is to just keep your gob shut about it. This is where the alcohol plays a part.

and some of the great artists and talents in history were not pleasant people. Some were even well known paedos. But it doesn't stop them being revered or their work being celebrated. His talent is clothes designing and Im not sure his views on jews or Hitler should see that talent tossed to the kerb. It's irrelevent to what he does. Unless he starts incorporating swatsikas into his designs.

and there's no escaping from the fact that people who live in a free country should have free speech. Otherwise it ceases to be a free country. He wasn't inciting hatred just having a drunken rant in an intimate setting that was just between a few people to hear. The fact that it was secretly filmed and now broadcast is not his responsibility. In fact the ones putting the video out there are more guilty of inciting hate because they are the ones spreading his personal views to the masses and giving it greater gravitas.

well he hasn't given his full detailed opinion about Hitler so lets not pretend we know it all based on a drunken rant clip. I doubt he really thinks Hitler is a great guy for ordering mass murders. When drunk you express things in a clumsy often incoherent manner. He basically needs to explain is views in full. And sober.

the point I made was that he said it in a private conversation. Not broadcast to the masses. You think we should all be prosecuted for shocking views we express in private? Or maybe only if we get secretly filmed and its then broadcast on youtube? Or maybe only if we are famous? See, this is where free speech comes into it.

his views belong to him and he's entitled to them. Yes, he now looks an ass(thanks to video). But let the punishment fit the crime and don't sacrifice a great talent.

joeysteele

I think drunk or sober,we should still be held responsible for what we do and say,too many times in law,we get more lenient sentencing and judging becasue the person was intoxicated and supposedly didn't know what they were doing or saying.
Those thoughts are still in their minds though.

There are some subjects that require, especially even more so from professional people in the public eye or not, the fullest sensitivity and avoidance even to bring up on any occassion, Hitler is one of them, the suffering he caused to the World is something to be etched firmly in the annals of history, his further evil acts of mass murder should never be forgotten and any 'greatness' Hitler may have ever had was well and truly destroyed by himself and the atrocious crimes he carried out against other people, on the grounds of race, disability, religion or sexuality too.
This man even drunk clearly has some regard for this madman who got power but while he may be entitled to have his admiration for Hitler he should have kept that firmly to himself and not help bring back the devastating facts that many still have to live with in their lives because of Hitler,by even saying such a thing as he was a man to be loved in any context.

Maybe even some posters on here could have lost a grandparent because of Hitlers craziness, certainly to the wider World many people still bare painful scars and trauma of those times. He should have been sacked,he way overstepped a line of not only right but also decency.

Yep, it's pathetic how many people are dismissing the severity of what he did because he was "drunk". If you can't handle your drink without becoming violent and/or abusive, then perhaps you shouldn't drink. Actions carried out by drunks have the same consequences to their victims as those carried out by sober people, so it can never be an excuse for antisocial behaviour of any kind.

It does, imo, He is entitled to his opinion but his opinion has consequences. His opinion could potentially ruin his employers business for a start unless he got rid of him. I know If I owned that business I wouldn't risk it for John Gallianos freedom of speech. and secondly, his employer is a Jew, If I owned a business and somebody made a comment like that about such a huge tragic period for my people I'd fire him in a heart beat, that's his freedom as the Boss

Its the fact that it was secretly filmed that has made it more powerful than it actually was. Otherwise it would have just been a private incident that a few people knew about.

I can understand him being sacked now the video is out there for all to see. Thats business and damage limitation. But his actual crime IMO doesn't deserve further prosecution. Eh, yeah it is, It's his fault because he is famous, and obviously acts like a tool when drunk, so he should have the common sense not to drink because the likelihood of someone filming him acting like a twat is pretty high when you're a famous person
