Get it right, the shapes used to spell out 2012 resemble letters that can be used to spell out the word Zion if you read all arse ways and spin one through 90 degrees.

I suppose that because they are so anti-Israel and consider it a prejudiced country they take offence to anything that could be promoting zionism, which they're saying this logo is. I dont see how anyone can look at it and think it must say zion though. I prefer the theory that it's Lisa Simpson giving head :laugh:

Iran hates Israel is all, refuses to even acknowledge its existence as a country. Has in the past stopped their own athletes from competing in competitions where there was also an Israeli competitor.

Zion is a term they use to describe Jerusalem, so having their athletes competing under "a sign that says Zion" is an insult.

Iranians "would not be missed" if they decided to boycott the London Olympics, David Cameron is reported as saying.

Last week, Iran threatened to stay away over claims the 2012 logo was racist as it resembled the word "Zion", a biblical term for Israel.

The prime minister told London-based paper Jewish News: "It's completely paranoid. If the Iranians don't want to come, don't come - we won't miss you.

"It would be a crazy reason for not coming," he said.

The London logo shows the numbers "2012" in four jagged figures and until now has only been criticised for its design.

Iranian Olympic officals sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) highlighting the perceived link.

But IOC president Jacques Rogge dismissed the claims and said he would "quietly" reply saying the logo "has nothing to do with racism or any political connotation".

In the interview with the newspaper, Mr Cameron also warned that athletes unwilling to compete against Israelis in 2012 would not be welcome.

"They can't come if they're going to behave like that," he said.

"You shouldn't have that approach to sport. If you were going to come to the Olympic Games, you take part against everybody and if you're going to behave like that you're not welcome."

A Downing Street spokesman later said: "Any country participating in the 2012 Games will be welcomed, but it is absolutely essential that they embrace the spirit of the Games."

Iran won a gold and bronze at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing to finish 51st in the medals table.

London Olympics: Iran to compete despite logo complaint

Iran has indicated it will attend the 2012 Olympics in London, despite complaining that the Games logo resembles the word "Zion".

Last month the Iranians complained to the International Olympic Comittee and called for the graphic to be replaced.

They objected on the grounds that its resemblance to the word Zion - a Biblical term for Israel - was racist.

But now the Iranian-backed Press TV has quoted an official as saying Iranians will "participate gloriously".

The report by Press TV quotes the secretary of Iran's Olympic organising committee, Bashram Afsharzadeh, as saying: "Our decision, to partake [in the] Olympic Games, has nothing to do with the UK politicians.

"We will make co-ordination with officials of the International Olympic Comittee and we will participate and play gloriously in London Games."

In its original letter to the IOC, Iran had called for the Games logo to be withdrawn and its designers "confronted".

There was also a suggestion that Iranian athletes would be told not to attend.

At the time, IOC president Jacques Rogge told BBC Sport: "No, it can't be serious. We will quietly reply, telling [Iran] the logo has nothing to do with racism or any political connotation."

The complaint was also dismissed by Prime Minister David Cameron, who said the Iranians would not be missed if they did not attend.

The Olympics isnt really about governments or politics though, that stuff is meant to be set aside and sport is one of the only things that still brings together a lot of countries. Cameron was absolutely correct in stating they won't be missed - it's not his job to motivate or inspire the Iranians to attend. If they're that easily hacked off by such a trivial thing, it's better they stay away rather than attend and cause more trouble for every imagined slight.
