View Full Version : Musical selectiveness
I don't know what the reason for this is, but I'm very hard to please when it comes to music. I make my mind up about artists pretty much instantly, mostly on the negative side, to the extent that while I may even enjoy one, two or even more of an artist's songs, I will refuse to admit I like them to myself. For example, I would never say I'm a Ke$ha fan but I have all but one of the singles she's released on my iPod. I say I hate 3OH!3 but I have four songs featuring them on my iPod. I rarely change my mind on artists. I don't have many artists I actively like, I only own the full discography of one artist (two albums and a few B sides) and I hate most music that's out at the moment...
Am I alone in my musical selectiveness? I feel like I'm being extremely picky but I'm convinced that there is music out there that will appeal to me, I've just not really found it yet, the stuff I do like is very niche and I haven't heard much in the way of similar stuff.

Most music I don't mind. I am willing to listen to anything that doesn't have a type of "chipmunk" sound in the backgroud! lol. Some I might not be keen on. Like I might like a few songs from an artist but could not listen to a whole album from that artist.

I hate all new acts and pretty much stick to what I like. Hasn't been any good new music years apart from bands that have been around a good while. Too much urban influence in normal pop :nono:

I hate pretty much over 90% of mainstream music (and not just today's mainstream music either) and don't see any shame in it.
I think my problem is that I stick to what I like and then don't really attempt to listen to new stuff unless I stumble across it myself, so for example somebody could recommend music to me that they think I would like but I probably won't go and then listen to it, but then could come across it myself months/years later and love it. I know I do it and I know it's stupid but I can't seem to help it!

It's important to be open-minded, but I remember a lecturer in my Aesthetics module at uni telling us never to be so open-minded that our brains fall out.
Having said that, I happen to think it is the population at large who consumes any old pop drivel who should endeavour to open their minds. If this weren't the case, the music industry wouldn't regurgitate the same garbage time after time -which always sells without fail- in the way that it does.
