View Full Version : Is the "Drunk" you, the real "You"?

This thread is inspired by the recent Galliano debacle. Do you think you become your true self when you're drunk? We all know how some people are happy drunks, whilst others are aggressive drunks. Which one are you, and do you think that's the real you that only comes out when you've had a few too many?
Personally, I fall into the happy drunk category, you know dancing on the table, telling complete strangers I love them, kissing everyone in sight, and then collapsing in a heap in the corner where I usually just fall asleep!
It is the only time I really open up to my nearest and dearest, but I can also be a right twat, so sometimes yeah and sometimes no.

i'm usually happier when i'm drunk, and i don't get angry or aggressive, which i can do easily when i'm sober, and i'm always the one that looks after other drunk people even when i am myself. for me i think it just lets down a wall that i hide behind, so yeah i become my true self.

I don't know. I've never been an "idiot/stupid drunk", I'm usually the one controlling the stupid drunks, I just get giggly and really happy.

Yeah I think it is. I tend to suppress my deepest thoughts but it all comes out when I get drunk. They why I end up crying a lot. It's the most embarrassing thing ever

Lol, yes that's me - I get embarrassingly affectionate and maudlin to my friends and family, and over familiar with total strangers, whereas in a sober state I'm much more reserved and self conscious.

Some people have told me it depends what they're drinking. My youngest son is a happy drunk when he sticks to beer and lager, but if he starts on the spirits, especially whisky, he can get really argumentative, bordering on aggressive, so maybe it's just as much to do with individual chemical reactions as it is with your inner self?

This is very true
I get happy drunk on cider/lager/wine
Cry on most spirits
Fight on vodka or baileys :/

^That's interesting...
When I've gotten drunk, it's been vodka basically.
I'm sure someone once told me that vodka makes you aggressive and my mum used to say gin makes you depressed

I'm a happy drunk, and I reckon so...although at least the way I'd like to be when sober I guess.

Is that because you don't drink, or because you just know when to stop? I wish I could say the same:laugh:

I'm a happy drunk. I don't usually get totally arseholed because I hate waking up with a hangover and not knowing what happened the night before. I know my limit and usually stick within it. I'd say my personality doesn't really change too much, I just feel happier.

I don't drink much but when I have been drunk or tipsy.. I am usually a happy drunk! I have only been aggressive once or twice because I was around people I didn't like. << It was at my friend's friends party but I didn't like his friends. Thankfully I learnt from that which happened years ago and never hang around with people I don't like!
I am better off sober or a bit tipsy to be honest. Give me good music and a good atmosphere to dance into! Then I am happy. What annoys me is when no can be bothered to dance!! BOOOOOOO!

Same here. To be honest.. the last time I drunk was last month. I drank 5 alcopops at a party. 2 alcopops and I was quite tipsy. I ate a lot of food after that.. drank 3 more and I became sober :S But I hated the next day because I wasn't even drunk and had spots on my stomach and felt sh!t.
From now on.. it's lemonade, J20's all the way I think. Seems like nowadays when I drink alcohol every few months I regret it and feel sh!t even if I wasn't drunk.
I think I will just make myself a space cake now and again! lol
I'm a ridiculously happy drunk, but then I'd say I'm a happy person by nature so I'm no different when I'm drunk really, just more fun loving I think. I tend to drink spirits rather than beer/cider/wine and I'm never aggressive although there've been a couple of times when I've gotten in from a night out and burst into tears in my room for no real reason pmsl.

Yeah same here. The main reason why I drunk alcohol now and again is to "gain confidence" at a party or something. Which is a reason I shouldn't drink. And this is the reason why most drink I think.

Yeah don't mix your drinks.. otherwise more chance of throwing up!! Er...... :yuk:
I'm the same wether drunk or sober, sometimes if I've drank too much I get a little bit louder but thats it, I can't be bothered with people who get pissed and then delibrately try to cause fights n arguments.

Most of the time yes I think so. I think you would have to be seriously, dangerously wrecked (like three litres of vodka) before you can be said to have an incapacity for making decisions. If somebody acts like an arsehole nine out of every ten times they are drunk, then it's not just a drink-related problem, is it?

Well I'll tell people stuff I never would when I'm sober, I'm more sociable when I'm drunk, I'll just strike up a conversation with any random stranger. I think I am a happy drunk. One of my friends is really bad with alcohol, he end up crying literally every time he drinks

Generally I am the same with exaggerated personality traits. Although the drunker I get the less thoughtfull I become, and more likely I am to do stuff I wouldn't normally do. Although I assume everyone is like that :D

I don't think you necessarily become your true self. I think it can free up your defenses. But then again, defenses are part of your true self. Thats the person you have evolved into and you have those walls up for a reason, usually self protection.
so the notion of what your true self is is debatable. The idea that you need a mind altering drug like alcohol to become your true self sounds all wrong to me. You can certainly become a less controlled version of yourself. If you can't even remember what you said or did then it can't be a true representation of you or how you would choose to behave. Choice is the key word because its how we choose to behave that is who we really are.
if that makes any sense...! (Im watching TV whilst writing this)
guess it depends on how much you drink. We could all do with loosening up a bit and relaxing. But there's a line. Ive seen a woman deliberately run into the front of a moving bus when drunk....Ive seen a guy drop down a 40 foot wall when drunk(he actually got up and stumbled away whilst I was calling an ambulance! he was too drunk to feel the injuries I think). So people do very stupid and dangerous things when drunk which you can't say their true self would ever do. They lose judgement in their actions.

Same here - they use the fact that they're hammered to cause all sorts of mayhem and trouble. I feel sorry for the staff in any A&E department on a Friday and Saturday night.
When you're drunk you tend to become disinhibited emotionally. Basically all the emotions surface more easily - so you can get more angry/upset/happy/loving etc. It's no more the real you than the regular sober and more tactful you. It's just more to the other extreme.
The real you is somewhere in between.

yeah, I agree with this which is why I think that being drunk doesn't really bring out your "true self" alcohol alters your mind so I think you're less real when drunk.
I'm not an aggresive person sober or drunk.. I'm a happy frunk I suppose.
However, it can't be the real me when I' drunk as I'm sure I act exactly like the kind of person that annoys me when I'm sober... I'm probably louder (I hate loud people) I swear like a trooper, talk non stop, sing out of tune in people's ears, dance badly and I am always right.
In fact I'm sure if you asked any of my friends they'd say that I am the same person when drunk, just a bit less inhibited.. I think that goes for most people (obviously apart from the rag's that can't handle it, go mental and end up inthe cells)
