Cheryl Cole's big brother Andrew Tweedy was jailed for 6 years today after admitting his involvement in planning an armed robbery in May last year.

The 30-year-old, who breached a suspended sentence imposed for attacking a man and dousing him in pepper spray, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob and possession of a firearm with intent.

Andrew let his 4 accomplices borrow his imitation handgun for a raid on a post office near his home in Longbenton, Tyneside, which netted the criminals £2,000.

'[Andrew] provided the gun to the robbers and his home was both the meeting point before the robbery and the hide out after it,' Gavin Doig, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court.

Andrew is the half-brother of Cheryl, 27.

Police found the Nissan Primera driven by the gang parked behind Tweedy’s house and within days he was arrested.

He confessed, revealing the names of his co-conspirators and gave a comprehensive description of how the ‘professionally-conceived’ robbery was executed.

Tweedy’s latest conviction – he has 90 others dating back to when he was 13 – is a fresh blow to his superstar sister, Cheryl. The 27-year-old singer and X Factor judge is trying to make it in the U.S..

She has tried repeatedly to help her elder brother and has previously paid for him to undergo rehabilitation for drug addiction.

Paul Caulfield, defending Tweedy, said his client had a ‘deficiency in consequential thinking that led him into this foolish escapade’.

Craig Glendinning, 24, of Walker, and Jamie Percival, 22, of Gosforth, Newcastle, were convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery. Swindle and Finlison were both given six years, Glendinning seven years and Percival six years, five months.

Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy has been found guilty of assaulting a woman nightclub attendant - but the jury decided it was not a race attack.

The20-year-old gasped and covered her face with her hands when the verdict was announced.

The judge at Kingston Crown Court sentenced Tweedy to 120 hours community service.

She was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to victim Sophie Amogbokpa and £3,000 prosecution costs.

The judge described the attack as an "unpleasant piece of drunken violence", adding Tweedy had shown "no remorse whatsoever".

The jury of seven men and five women convicted the pop star of assault occasioning actual bodily harm by a majority of 11 to one.
