View Full Version : Would you accept a cancerous organ?
I was watching local news yesterday and it got me thinking. There was a report about an organ donor who died and two people received his kidneys. But unknown at the time of the transplant, he had kidney cancer and now the two people are going through chemotherapy.
It got me thinking, would you knowingly accept an organ that was cancerous, if it was the choice between that and continuing with alternative treatment and having an uncertain future anyway?

well, If it was either that or nothing I suppose some chance is better than no chance :/ I've never heard of that happening before though and I doubt it's a regular occurrence

The alternative treatment sounds like a better option tbh. D:

I'd rather have no kidney and try the alternative options.

Even though your life would be drastically cut short and you'd have no quality of life? Same could be said if you accept it, but at least you've got a chance. I'd take it depending on how far progressed it was

Is one of the alternatives stem cell research that could enable doctors to grow you a new kidney?! :amazed:

Well there would be no point in accepting a cancerous organ as it would not likely be able to be treated and would either possibly rapidly or more slowly cause secondary deposits of cancer in other organs,so definately on that one,no I wouldn't.

The people who I mention in the opening post are being treated for it and are responding well.

The awful thing with cancer is they do treat it and if the treatment is successful then they can have some life but inevitably the cancer comes back and with a vengeance too.
Once you have multi organ cancer there is no hope and so the risks with a cancerous organ are just too high to take.

No, cancer is a more emotionally draining process.
