Does America have an empire like Britain and Rome did or is it just really powerful? It seems like critics of American foreign policy will casually throw out the word "empire" but is that really justified?

NO. America is just a very large country. It does not, however, colonise other countries, neither does it have sovereignty or governance over other nations, much as it would like to. Nor does it have the right to reserve for itself natural resources from those countries whose affairs it elects to involve itself in, much as it would like to.

The USA is a superpower. It is not an empire. Americans probably think it is because it's likely they wouldn't understand the meaning of the word "empire".

Surely we are intelligent enough to have a debate about USA without comparing it to the UK about size/weight etc? That's in another thread.


But no, I don't believe USA are an empire. They have power, but they don't own many other places or control them. Same as the UK, we are no longer an Empire.
