England pays more for the upkeep of Scotland, N.Ireland and Wales. For now anyway... I think England is getting sick of being the one footing the bill. And considering there are more than five times as many people in England as there are in the other three countries, eventually votes will count.

Sorry to contradict you, (and I'm not talking personally here) but the English are pretty much disliked everywhere.
Asa Scot I can tell you that foreigners change instantly towards you when they find out you are Scottis and not English.
It's maybe not right, and again, I personally have yet to meet an Englishperson whom I have disliked, but it is the truth I'm afraid

And yet... I've travelled quite extensively, worked in several countries and I have made lifelong friends all over the world. Funny isn't it, people's perceptions. As a Scot, you perceive that everyone in the world dislikes the English (except you, obviously...) and yet my findings have been very different. The one place in the world where I felt threatened was Glasgow, funnily enough.

Yeah I agree, the vast majority of people I've come across have never held any bad feeling towards someone for being English

your truth. your perception.
Ive travelled abroad many times and have never felt any hate. Certainly not in English speaking nations like US, Australia etc English people seem to be well liked.
I think in certain holiday resorts where the union jack wearing English go on mass there can be some negativity from the locals. But generally there is no open animosity when just travelling more low key.
I live surrounded by foreigners here and two of my best mates are from Brazil and Belgium. They love English people.
No, they are not conclusive proof of anything but neither are the foreigners youve encountered who apparently hate the English. And I doubt youve been everywhere either so you're certainly generalising.

I'm not saying every individual Englishperson is disliked.. but in general,as a nation, England isn't exacly the most popular country in the world.
My OH is English (he insists our children are half English, which I go along with for a qiet life, but insecret I tell them that they are only Scottish! :D)
Most of his immediate family and exrtended family are down south and I find them to be the warmest, friendliest and welcoming people I know, so Ido realise that it's not a dislike of individuals but of a nation..
They can all hate us but they all know deep down we are the greatest country that is why so many of them want to live here.

The only reason there isnt any historical resentment towards countries like Scotland is because you are a small non threatening country that has never had the power to piss off other countries. Or build an empire by colonising a third of the world.
you are the small embattled underdog country. Everybody likes underdogs.

We have never been a "United Kingdom"; the Scots, Welsh and Irish have always hated us, and the English have not cared one jot. Even now, with most of the world despising us and laughing at us, the English rise above it, secure in the honour and privilege of just being English - the bulldog spirit is still alive and well:wink:

Which part? I'd say it's true that we have never invaded and colonized a third of the world..but I don't really see how that's something to be proud of to be honest and I think zippys apparent pride in this part of Englands history is what pisses people e off.
I'd also say that yes it is true that we are a small country but I disagree that we are umderdogs. Just because we are smaller, does not mean we are in any way inferior to England. I find zippys suggestion that we are umderdogs very typical and basically a fine example of the type of **** that puts people's backs up!

It's not an uncommon thing to happen. The Irish and Scots in particular are very well liked in most countries as being the alcoholic bastard cousins of the English pricks.

Oh come on that's ridiculous, you did colonise a quarter of the world because Scotland is part of the UK. Dont know why you think that you're free from responsibility for British Imperialism because your constituent country isnt the biggest. It was not England that had the largest Empire in the world, it was Britain; England, Scotland, Wales and, at that time, Ireland. Plenty of Scots would have fought for the Empire and for colonial forces, it's stupid to pin the whole thing on England

If you go to Australia they hate both the English and the Irish. Many landlords refuse to let houses to both nationalities because we are the heaviest and loudest drinkers who cause the most distruction. ;)
Braveheart is a load of crap, if you want a real impressive victory look at the Battle of Agincourt, 6000 Englishmen against 36,000 Frenchmen and the English came out on top :spin:

That's faulty logic I would say. I can't speak for Wales because I don't know their history, but the majority of Scottish and Irish people resented England and being a part of the British empire back in the day. Why would they be considered part of Englands ills just because that's what it said on paper? England created the British empire. It was Englands empire. Are you telling me Ireland - being that it was a part of Britain - had the biggest empire in the world? Not a chance. Are you telling me they should be part of the blame for the atrocities of the British empire even though they fell to those atrocities themselves? That if England beats you you then get considered part of the problem and should shoulder some of the blame?
It's like saying the Polish were part of the grave threat the axis posed in World War II because Germany overran the place.
So how is it you Class it as an Anti Celtic song? it's got nothing to do with them at all.
I'm bored. I don't really like football. I really have no interest in Celtic or Rangers.. I quite fancy Neil Lennon but that's about it!
I'm going to start a thread about shopping, make up and shagging
Hell yeah. I love make up and shagging!

It's not a 'thing'. It's not anything. Some people hate the English, some hate the Irish, some hate everyone. It was just one example of a few times I was treated by a few people on a planet that has six billion other people.
Means nothing. Nobody will know for sure who hates who the most until the results of that survey that was never done that interviews those six billion comes in.
Everything is just examples.

That's faulty logic I would say. There might have been a greater enthusiasm for Imperialism in England but that doesnt just rid the other constituent countries of any responisiblity, and engaging in finger pointing and pinning the blame fully on England seems a bit petty to me. There were still the same Scottish regiments in the Army fighting for the Empire and furthering Imperialism. I'm not saying it was Ireland's Empire, not at all, but it was Britain's and Shasown made an interesting post recently detailing the importance of Irish forces in the British Army during the Colonial days. To say that "we didnt do it" and "it was England" doesnt really stand up in my eyes, and you cant really fully rid yourself (that's a general you btw, not directed at you personally) of any responsibility, even if it was mainly driven by England. There were several Scottish Prime Ministers during this time after all, couple of Welshman as well

A tiny minority of Irishmen fought for England in the colonial days. Many of them were treated as lepers by the Irish for treason and betrayal. A sizeable number of Irishmen fought in the first World War but then that was on another scale altogether. To say Ireland should shoulder some responsibility for the British Empire's atrocities I feel is both ignorant and insulting. By becoming victim to these atrocities we became unwitting participants in the British Empire ... to then have to shoulder some of the responsibility?
Nah. Not buying it. Not in this lifetime, sorry.

You know, I think the Nolans are bigger in Britain than in Ireland, we were watching Family fortunes last week, and the question was name an Irish band and the Nolans were up there, Gav was like, who the ****** are they? I had heard of them but only from british programmes and I couldn't name one of their songs!
Father Ted is the best thing to come out of this country. And RTE were too stupid to buy it.

You've kind of taken me away from the main point of my argument, I can kind of understand Ireland's case and was reluctant to include them in my first post but I dont think you can say the same for Scotland. Scots were hardly hostile to Britain's actions, the Scramble for Africa encouraged a wave of Popular Imperialism in Scotland just as much as it did in England and there were several prominent Scottish missionaries which encouraged expansion, most notably David Livingstone. And when this was, at times, done by Scottish Prime Ministers with the full support of plenty of Scottish Regiments then nah, you're not blameless and above being held responsible.
Ireland I'll give you, Scotland I wont.
Fair dues. I need to brush up on my Scottish history.

I'm not really an expert at all but I've looked at British Imperialism in the 19th century in quite a bit of detail, I'm not sure about Scottish involvement in the earlier days of Colonialism though tbh
As a scot living in england I can safely say england is a cesspot.
