Am I likely to die if I buy a pair of running shoes and just mindlessly try and run as far as I can?

Niamh.

oh, I just started running on Tuesday. Gav has been running for months now and finally convinced me to start. His advice was to take it easy for the first while or else you won't keep it up. So, I picked a spot, not too far jogged, walked for a little bit then turned around walked bak to my spot and jogged back to the car again.

not very far, I suppose I ran for maybe 10minutes altogether (maybe not even that) around 5 minutes each direction But I'm going from doing no exercise at all to running so like I said Gavs best advise was to ease yourself into it! Also, i smoke so it was the breathing that was my biggest problem, I've managed to cut way back on the ciggies though

Yip.. me too. I've almost convinced myself to stop. OH has managed 8 weeks now, but he has much more willpower than me!

We've just joined a gym too and if we're going to get fit, I don't really see the point in staying on the fags :bored:

I know it's scary:shocked: but I definitely found after I went for my run on Tuesday I didn't actually want a cigarette for ages afterwards. I've managed to cut back from between 15/20 a day to 7/8. I think if I keep up the running, it will be easier to quit altogether. I'm going to make a really big effort to keep the running up, I'm so useless at sticking to stuff like that though:bawling: I'm going for a run today after work actually, I'm going to try to do 3 days a week

If you're just starting just do something like run for 6minutes walk for 2. Repeat 5 times and see how you feel then carry on if you think you can.

Good on you!! At least you have Gav to encourage you!..

I told my OH I was thinking of going running and asked if he wanted to come.. He laughed hysterically and said he would follow me in the car, film my hilarious running style and put it on Youtube! :bawling:

Yeah, that was just an example, just adjust it to your level of fitness. You quickly build stamina and fitness up though. Good luck!

Yeah, thats true actually.. I started walking last year and went from 2 miles a day to 6 miles a day within a couple of weeks.

I'm terrified of blistersagain though! :nono:

yeah, that's too much to start with, like I said I ran for about 4/5 minutes walked for another 4/5 minutes then ran back for 4/5 minutes. I was so out of breath I couldn't even talk for about 20 minutes after:joker:

yeah, he's been great tbh, he's running between 5 and 7 miles eachtime he runs now but he still comes with me and my miserable little run anyway!

I think you should ignore your OH and just do it, he won't be laughing when you're fit as a fiddle and running miles!

I do about half hour worth of walking/jogging/sprinting a night to try some shift some weight, I wait until about 7:30 so its slightly dark and few people drive by.

When you are jogging try to maintain a pace where you can still talk, if you find your breathing too hard to do that slow down a little. You will find over a little time you can go a little faster and a little bit further.

If you are wearing the same well fitting shoes blisters are unlikely to form in the same places, the underlying skin grows a little thicker. Unless of course the shoes dont fit properly.

that's been so hard for me so far, I really need to try and knock the cigarettes on the head.

My feet might still be ok from when I was walking as they really toughened up eventually.. But those first few are agony. A friend told me to thread a needle and pull a bit thread through the blister and leave it there.. Probably one of the best tips I've ever been given. Ih and wearing a thick pair of socks over a thin pair..

Maintaining a pace whereI can still talk?? That'll be walking then!

Yeah you are better off slow draining a blister like that, to help toughen up the feet soak your feet in your own pee for about 10 minutes every few days, (anyones pee will do it doesnt have to be your own but most people are grossed out by the thought) that works as well ;) It also helps to combat athletes foot etc.

definitely, in fact they recommend exercise to people suffering from depression as it makes you feel good. I don't even want to lose that much weight (half a stone would be nice though:laugh: ) it's more to tone up a bit and to get fit because I'm very unfit!

No, I will not be doing that!

Does vinegar not do the same thing?

We dont have lakes up here we have lochs, will they do?

Loch Ness is quite close, but if you think I am running round that you need your head examined.

Stacey.
14-04-2011, 04:31 PM
LOL at Boothy just giving his expert advice

And it wouldn't be good to do that, you should start off by doing a bit at a time, and build up to it. Start off by doing like walking aswell, it'll help you with the strength, speed and stamina things.

Lee.

Lol! Don't be a wuss! It woudn't take you that long!!

Actually I do have a small loch near here with a walkway right round it.. I've walked it before but saidI would never go back because of the amount of inconsiderate/mental dog owners!

Just a couple of days non stop.

Wonder when I should up the number of laps for that one

I don't like running at all. Prefer cycling.

I run on my mates treadmill occasionally whilst watching tv. Theyre actually good fun. I'd get one if I had the space for it.
