View Full Version : Adele vs Gaga?

who will have the bigger selling album this year?
Adele is setting a huge target at the moment. Her album 21 is currently number one in over a dozen countries itunes charts after 3 months. Just the UK & US sales alone are already around 3.3 million so she must be set for 10 million total worldwide at least by the end of the year.
Gaga will get off to a flying start probably but I think her appeal is definitely on the wane judging by the poor sales of Judas.
but which album will sell more in 2011?

I disagree. Many artists who have had huge selling albums then have a (relative)flop.
And Adeles album is showing no signs of weakening. And Set fire to the rain hasn't even been released yet!

I think Gaga will get it in the long run. Some of the tracks from the new album sound massive and I think they'll have a huge appeal. Marry The Night and Edge of Glory will probably be huge singles.
Americano will probably go far too, I remember reading somewhere that its gonna finish the Paparazzi/Telephone video story. So that'll probably get loads of attention.

Adele will sell more, after the initial release of GaGa's album the hype will die down, whereas Adele's is still selling very strongly worldwide.
The one that's not based on gimmickery.

yeah we keep hearing about how, like, AMAZING certain tracks are. Then they come out and we're like is that it?Really? Sorry but I think that Gaga sound has exhausted itself. If you're gonna proclaim yourself to be the future then you can't keep sh!tting out the same sound.

Gaga seems to be going a bit downhill, while Adele is getting more popular.
While Gaga still has her diehard fans (who, lets be honest...if she took a **** and recorded it they would still say it was amazing) Adele will have more 'casual' listeners...

Gaga won't come close to 2m this year. Maybe in a couple of years when it's on sale in HMV.

 This, Gaga fans should wait until the songs are actually released instead of presuming them to be amazing and already proclaiming that they'll be massive

I don't think she's exhausted herself really. Her new stuff isn't really the same as her old stuff. Judas (bar the chorus perhaps) has a pretty different sound in comparison to her past singles. She is altering her style. :/
And I know what you mean about the whole hype of the music and then the singles being seen as let downs but (and I know this is gonna sound silly) I think she's saving the best music from the album until after its released.
(I still wish she'd change the album's horrid cover though :bawling:)

I'm sorry but I refuse to believe that Lady Gaga's releasing crap tracks and saving the good ones for the album, Niall. Lady Gaga has a lot of die hard fans, so I imagine it'll still sell shed loads of copies, but casual listeners aren't going to be persuaded to go buy it based on the two weak singles she's put out so far.
Adele - Here's hoping anyway.

Adele's singles from the album aren't exactly charting better than Gaga she is only really doing well here with them in the UK. I don't think because Gaga's recent single aren't doing well that means her Album wont.
She isn't helping herself in the UK by releasing her singles on a friday afternoon because all her fans rush to get it, then it dies off because she isn't promoting it or releasing a video for weeks after so she pretty much goes under the radar to everyone else who might buy the song. Most number ones these days are whatever is getting played every five minutes on the music channels.

Adele, Gaga's new album won't have the chart lifespan of The Fame and the material she's released for it so far has been inconsistant. She'll crush herself under her own hype will Adele will chug on with the sales I think.
Gaga's too gimmicky and her numbers beyond original instant hype sales haven't been great for this album so far. Adele's got a wide demographic and the honest simplicity to appeal to the masses more I think.

erm you may wanna check how big Rolling in the deep has been worldwide. Her biggest hit ever. Its even just moved to number one on US itunes.
anyways, she's not even a singles artist. And RITD is really the only track thats been widely released worldwide(although Set fire has already been number one in Holland due to public demand). I fully expect more global hits to come from the album.

Unless you're Beyoncé, artists tend to release around 4 singles from any given album before moving onto a new project because it's not commercially worthwhile throwing cash at producing music videos etc for a song that everyone who already wants it, has. When's her album being released? Is she likely to release a third single before the album comes out? If so then I could envisage up to six singles being released off it, but if it's coming out soon then it'll surely only be a maximum of four, potentially five? It makes little sense to release a weaker song off the album as the first two singles though, so I can't imagine the rest of the songs will be great if this is the standard of the 'best' songs.

Is this globally or in the UK?
Because in the UK it'll be Adele, she's at 2 million sales and it's not even half way through the year
I think globally GaGa will, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if she got 1 million in it's debut week in the US alone

For her debut single it'd didn't do that well when compared to BTW, it got a few number #1's, BTW went number #1 worldwide (apart from the few places where it still manged top 10) and sold god knows how much. *is sure Smithy will come later and tell us*
I've listened to Adele's album and she has definetely put her best songs out first. From what i've heard from Gaga's album she still has some strong songs left which will definetely be top 10 material.

It sold 1 million globally after 5 days and 1 million in the US alone after 10 days making it the fastest selling song in iTunes history, it's sold over 350,000 copies in the UK and is currently the 7th best selling single of the year http://oi54.tinypic.com/rm5w6q.jpg

Longevity is what matters and the problem with Gaga is that her sales have been a flash in the pan with this album, BTW only really did well in the US but everywhere else it just made a strong debut and then dropped off the charts.
Strong debut sales doesn't make a successful artist, consistent sales over a length of time is better then a record breaking debut that disappears quickly.

Well thats subjective. Looking around it seems that Set fire to the rain is most fans fave track. Plus Turning tables. My current fave, Ill be waiting. So there's no shortage of strong tracks there to release. Truth is, if youre not a proper Adele fan then you probably havent listened to the non singles much. They grow on you.

Not saying much considering Poker Face was the biggest selling song of the year in the UK in 2009. BTW peaked at 3 and didn't even make #1 over here, SLY was huge over here then but still Gaga's Bad Romance would have been able to get at least a week at #1 if it had been released in 2011 at the same time. The UK public didn't warm to it like all of her previous hits. Looks like it will be the same with Judas too. Obviously I can't say for sure because the video's not out, she's not done promo etc. but if anything I can see the video turning people against her.

That is so true, When people see that this music video will be another rip off of Madonna's videos (From the basic plot line it is way to similar to Like A Prayer) then more people will be fed up and see what a con artist she is. Plus as it will use Religious Imagery (How origonal :bored:) then it would of corse offend the religious groups. The only people who wont will be mindless teens who think she is original and have not seen how much Gaga has ripped people off.

Well at some point Mary Magdalene tries to help a black 'figure' who was recently framed for a crime that he didn't commit. Which is one of the core plotlines in Like A Prayer. Madonna (at first hesitates) tries to help the black Jesus who was framed for assulting a woman.

What the **** are you talking about, the video has nothing to do with a black figure (unless Judas was black, which I don't think he was, and even if he is he's being played by Norman Reedus (http://goremaster.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Norman-Reedus.jpg)) It's about her being inlove with Judas O__O

Because it is a religiously aimed video and it could provoke religious groups who assotiate the man with being white.

Not always it doesn't. Just look at LoveGame, that had a video out before it's release and it only scraped the top 20. Born This Way has had plenty of airplay, it's on the radio a lot and I always see the video on TV. She may not have promoted it over here apart from radio interviews, but the song has been easily accessible through radio and TV. It's been hard to miss it. Some may have warmed to it but a large majority haven't, the general feeling was that it wasn't as good as her previous singles. Die hard fans love it of course but the general buying public didn't warm to it like they did Poker Face, Bad Romance, Paparazzi and Bad Romance. She's already lost a load of fans with this era alone, she'll still have a big fanbase yes, but from the sound of this Judas video, it's likely she'll lose a lot more. She's pushing the boundaries with her religious fans. Singing about loving Judas, the man who betrayed Jesus Christ, is already appalling enough but portraying the Bible in the music video and giving religion more bad publicity is a bit much even for Gaga.

Singing about loving Judas, the man who betrayed Jesus Christ, is already appalling enough but portraying the Bible in the music video and giving religion more bad publicity is a bit much even for Gaga.
LoveGame....the 4th single (in the UK) from an album which had sold over a million copies, yeah Im soooo shocked it didn't get any higher.
I still don't see your point, if people haven't warmed to it why has is sold so well, it's had steady sales since it's release and it's likely the song will sell another 50/100k by the end of the year. I don't see how she's lost fans, either, just because she's released a song some people aren't too keen on doesn't mean they dislike her as an artist, it just means that they dislike a song she's released :conf2: And tbh, "religious" fans should be more bothered about whats actually happening within the church, GaGa's released a new single and a belgian bishops just admitted to molesting his nephews, which do you think people are more pissed about?
And I don't see how people can complain about the video when they haven't seen it, 90% of the time rumors floating around about vidoes are wrong

But people HAVE heard it and given rave reviews, whereas people HAVEN'T seen the video, but are complaining
She's not singing about loving the man that betrayed Jesus Christ. Only thick Christian douchebags who don't understand metaphors think that. She's just using the namesake and Christian iconography to tell a seperate story about loving another man entirely.
People who cannot deduct metaphor shouldn't be let outside their front doors, nevermind be allowed access to mainstream entertainment.

And also there is love in the LAP music video as well.
Harry nearly every music video involves some sort of story with two lovers you cannot say she's ripping Madge off with that alone.
Jesus Christ it really irks me how Madonna fans just hate Gaga for what they assume to be her ripping off Madonna's work. Even in cases where its blatantly obvious that she's paying homage all the Madge fans are like "slghaskjhkjsdh COPYCAT! LETS KILL HER!" :bored:

But it is the fact that Lady Gaga openenly does it and too often which is bugging them the most. She surely has other idols that she can plagurise , why is it always Madonna? (If you say Madonna is Lady Gaga's biggest idol I will simply ignore the post - She has other idols and rarely uses them...) And it annoys me when Gaga's fans treat her like she is the next best thing when she simply isnt is so annoying. The 'Little Monster's/Mother Monster' clique makes me cringe. Not to add to the fact it is no longer the Fame Monster era of which she is still clinging onto.. It is so downgrading and dam right patronising.

She does have other idols you are correct in that. She has stated that BTW has many Bruce Springsteen-ish songs and that some of them have an Iron Maiden or Kiss vibe to them. But the thing is Harry you and I both know that she has grown up with Madonna and has been heavily influenced by her. In that sense, anywhere where she appears to be 'copying' Madonna I think is actually ridiculous, she is simply paying homage imo to one of her biggest idols.
And many artists refer to their fans by the names of their albums or singles or whatever. Nicki Minaj for example calls her fans Barbies and Ken Barbies because she calls herself Harajuku Barbie. I think its gonna be here to stay so like deal with it. :|

I hope there are many Bruce Springsteen rock infulenced songs on the album, That would be different compared to her plagurisum of Madonna and other pop artists. She could be a bit more modest when she is playing so called 'homage' to Madonna. Some of M's best work was simple and did not rely on the shock factor. Her album Ray Of Light showed that. It is quite patronising and degrading using ''fan terms''.

Managed to go top 10 in lots of other countries though where the album sold well.
Because it's by Gaga. She can sell songs regardless of the quality, because it's a new song by Lady Gaga people will buy it. Yeah in America and other countries for sure, because it got a much better response over there. It won't sell that much in the UK though, it's already peaked and I can't see it ever going near the top 10 again unless she does promo on BGT or XF. She has lost fans, you just have to read the reviews on iTunes to realise that. I'm not on about millions here but she has lost a lot because they miss her old sound from The Fame. They loved her old stuff but not her new songs. Yes but it's hard not to notice Gaga. She's everywhere. This video is going to go viral like all of her other videos and it'll be hard to miss it. It's just a bit disrespectful to tactfully recreate the Bible in a music video and exploit it in that way.
Oh and Stu, I am aware of her intention with the song and that she's not directly referring to Judas Iscariot but a lot of Christians and Catholics don't know that. She hasn't emphasized that to the public.

The world total so far for 21 is...
4.28 million.
It seems to be even gaining stronger momentum worldwide. Especially in the US where her song just being covered rocketed it to #1 on itunes. She's rumoured to be making an appearance on the show herself soon which could really see sales soar.
Can't see Gaga competing with this album when it could have a 6-7 mill lead. I see 21 selling strong throughout the year and then even being re-packaged for christmas.

Adele has sold an amazing 5.7 million of 21 so far and is selling over 300k weekly worldwide!
In US she spends 9th week at no1 and has been certified dbl platinum(2mill). Longest stint at no1 since George Michaels Faith for UK artist in US. And RITD is still no1 having sold a whopping 2.7 mill singles. Its also still just the first single from the album! This album just has no ceiling and is already 3mill sales ahead of its nearest rival(Rihanna) this year. Worldwide its actually gaining in momentum.
And she's announced on stage that she has just received a complimentary email from the woman herself...Lady Gaga.

And if you actually bothered to watch Gaga last Sunday on Radio 1's Big Weekend, you'd of seen when she sung at the piano, her outfit wasn't the most eye catching. It was pretty simple by her standards. And when Gaga sings live its perfectly easy to sing along.

I don't hate her guts and actually agree that she could keep it simple like Adele if she wanted.
I was just making the point that all that extra stuff isnt necessary to make an amazing live show. Fans just want to enjoy the music and sing along. Those big costume, choreographed shows can lack intimacy and waiting for the costume/stage changes can be very tedious and ruin momentum.
Adele actually has a great personality and interacts with her fans in a way an aloof artist like Gaga never could. Its a question of relating. Who the hell relates to Gaga?

I don't really think the costume changes ruin momentum. I went to the Monster Ball and whenever she went to change clothes there was always an interlude to keep you entertained and they never really lasted much longer than 2 minutes.
Gaga can interact with her fans though. :joker: She loves talking to her fans and stuff.

Those are the type of shows she puts on though. It's such a weak argument. I understand personal preference with regards to what you spend your own ticket money on but you cannot dismiss acts who put on big stage shows because 'they don't need them' or 'it gets tedious' as if they were somehow lesser than the latest act you have latched onto to do the L above the head sign to the GaGa posse with.
That's the business artists like GaGa are into and there is a demand for it. Bowie didn't need to slap on platform boots to improve his music but that's exactly what he did because that's the type of show he wanted to put on.
Funny that you are speaking for the fans who just want to sing along. Do you honestly think if you were to quiz most people going in the doors to arenas that they would agree with you? The vast majority came to see a bloody good show. Sure plenty would be happy with GaGa unplugged in a nice black dress or something like that but I'm betting the audience I'm arguing on behalf of it bigger.
So all that stuff is necessary to the type of show she wants to put on, yeah. And I would rather see that type of show than hear Adele singing live with a nice white curtain behind her.

I'd agree with you but I take it your a Madonna fan? And she is far from talented. After watching a video on youtube of Lady Gaga playing piano and singing with no auto tune etc Gaga gets kudos for being able to hold a note.
The fact the other chose the name "Madonna" speaks volumes about how high her self importance is. Ego bigger than her talent range.

well she was always very obvious with her tributes to her icons
but this thread is not about Madonna. She has an album out later in the year(hopefully) so Im sure there'll be plenty of chances for her haters to slag her off then if they choose. Each to their own, I don't care about others not liking her tbh.

I don't hate her just making a point.
And I'm sure the Gaga fans don't care that you hate her. But you've already hijacked the thread comparing Gaga to all sorts of things when the thread calls for comparison between her and Adele. Which is like comparing apples and oranges as it is.
