View Full Version : Does this make me Homophobic?

I like to respect all kinds of people, bar a few but let's not go there.
Anyway, I don't mind Gays at all.

Infact, I'll be honest in the past I use to throw the odd 'Queer' or 'Fag' word around kids who were Gay in school.
But then I came here and alot of members on here who are Gay are actually some of my favourite members:

Ross, Niall, Scott etc
And there's a few others but I'm not sure if they're gay or not so I won't say their names.

Anyway the point of the thread,

Does this make me homophobic if I hold views that when I see a Gay couple kissing in public I feel quite repusled or disgusted by it, infact I feel like that when I see a straight couple kissing in public, it makes me sick.

But when I see two girls kissing in public, it's like :amazed: and I start walking slower just to see the kiss in full and stuff.

I mean the same goes for TV as I said in the other thread,
If I see Syed or Christian kissing in EastEnders it's like  but if it's Sophie Webster and her Girlfriend I SkyPlus the episode to rewatch it.

I hate feeling Homophobic, does anyone else have these views?
Maybe even the other way around?

And no that doesn't make you homophobic if you don't like the sight of gay or straight couples kissing in public. Well idk what to call it. Maybe you just don't like the thought of kissing in general?

Nope, you're just not comfortable with 2 guys kissing. It's not like you go out of your way to shout abuse at them for doing it or hate gay guys in general.

it's kinda normal to feel uncomfortable around anyone kissing, whether its a girl/boy girl/girl w.e

but saying those words isn't nice. I hate them. It doesn't necessarily make you homophobic cause you don't mean it in that way, it just makes you a dick.

Nah.. I don't think that's homophobia. If you felt hatred towards gay men, then yes, but a lot of men feel discomfort at seeing two gay men kissing

Just sounds like you hate seeing men :joker:

Well I guess not if you're comfortable with two girls - I'm a bit iffy with the whole "disgusted" by members of the same sex thing because I think there's a fine line between discomfort and intolerance. Being bisexual I guess I can't really understand that.

A lot of homophobes do use the "ugh keep it behind closed doors" remark as a safety net. But I think so long as you're not going "WHAT ARE GAVIN AND PAULO DOING? THAT IS WRONG" and getting OTT and hateful about it, then it's cool.

From your posts here Patrick I've never thought of you as homophobic at all. You've never seemed to care what sexuality people are.

Nah you're just not comfortable with PDA (public displays of affection) - I'm not either, I think it's a bit awkward to see regardless of who's making out with who!

Well if you are not saying they shouldn't do it and are not complaining about it to them or others, no I don't see that as homophobic, you are just uncomfortable with it and don't approve of the public showing of that affection.

If you go around calling people a fag/queer as an insult etc yes. Though I suppose context would come into it. Calling a gay friend "oh yer daft puff" you'd already know wether they minded or not. Calling any old random person it in the street would be another matter

If you just don't like to see something - no. Most people don't like watching something or another

The question you have to ask yourself is, would you be offended if someone called you a homophobe?

If you have feelings of revultion of seeing two individuals kissing - irrespective of their sex - you have a problem with those particular types of individuals.

If I had a problem seeing a straight couple kissing I would too. But I dont, so I don't.

But your use of the words 'queer' and 'fags' clearly indicate homophia anyway, so ... it doesn't take Miss Marple to reach a conclusion on this issue.

I guess feeling uncomfortable with 2 men kissing is slightly homophobic if you dont know them and youre not near them youve just happen to seen them as youve walked past. However I dont think its 'hate' towards it, you simply dont feel comfortable.

Now if it were just if they were kissing right near you then it wouldnt be homophobic, as people can find straight people kissing near them uncomfortable (esp if theyre like eating each other :amazed:)

Nah lol I think I kinda show some camp traits, but I reckon that's because I was brought up by females and there was barely a guy there to like be a Dad figure lol.

Can I just point out, I only really called people that when I was in first year and stuff.
Like that's what I mean, since I came to TiBB and spoke and got along with alot of Gay members, sometimes not even realizing they're gay - it kind of made me stop being so narrow minded and stuff when it came to Gays and now I don't say those words.

Oh right.
Yeah I agree, on the bus and stuff when people do it sitting right infront of you - I think it's really awkward aswell lol.

The question you have to ask yourself is, would you be offended if someone called you a homophobe?

Yes.
That's basically why I made the thread really, because I think being homophobic is quite a bad thing to be really, I got called it once in school by a teacher [well alot of us got called it] and it pissed me off.
