this happened in Tenerife. Apparently a witness saw the suspect running down the street holding her head by its hair! A Bulgarian homeless man is being questioned.

A British woman has been stabbed and decapitated in Tenerife, according to reports.

The woman was reportedly attacked in a supermarket in the town of Los Cristianos on the island.

A Bulgarian man, believed to be homeless, has been detained by Spanish police.

Spanish media reported that witnesses saw the man enter a Chinese supermarket at the Valdes Shopping Centre and, without saying a word, attacked the woman with a knife, cutting her head off.

A regional government spokeswoman said the killer is understood to have obtained a knife from inside the store to launch his attack.

Colin Kirby, of tenerifemagazine.com witnessed the event. He told Sky News: "It was all a bit surreal I was heading past the commercial centre and saw a group of people by the entrance and a medical guy going in form the health centre.

"I assumed someone had fainted, walked on, and then I could hear screaming and shouting.

"I glanced behind me and a guy was ambling down the street holding what I assumed to be a joke head, by the hair."

He said security guards gave chase to him, eventually managing to bring him down and restrain him.

"The guy did not seem completely right to me, he was a bit dishevelled, not particularly smart and as he was walking with the head he was muttering.

"It was a bizarre scene."

Manuel Reveron, a local a councillor for citizen security said: "Apparently this gentleman without any motive or any reason, although for this there is no reasoning, entered the shop and then cut this woman's neck and took the head in his hand outside up to the sidewalk.

"Then the security guard was able to throw him on the ground and we covered the macabre (site)."

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of reports of the death of a British national in Tenerife and are urgently investigating."

That's horrific! The man must have a very disturbed mind, He'll probably and hopefully get a life sentence for this.

It does make me wonder about the supermarket though, the knife was from there but you can't decapitate someone with just an ordinary knife, at least not quickly. It must have been something machete-esque. I hope that this shakes them into being more careful with how they keep knives and such.

I just have no words, that poor, poor woman. What the hell is this earth coming to?! You couldn't even begin to imagine that happening this day in age or ever. It's like something out of a horror film. I honestly thought when I saw a link to it on Facebook that it was those fake scam sites that try and draw you in until I saw the news.

The British woman beheaded in a supermarket on the Spanish island of Tenerife was named as it emerged that she had complained of being harassed moments before she was attacked. Jennifer Mills-Westley, 60, from Norwich, was killed on Friday in a frenzied and unprovoked knife attack in the town of Arona, part of the Los Cristianos beach resort.

Her daughter Sarah said: "Mum retired a number of years ago and was fully enjoying her retirement travelling between Tenerife and France where she spent time visiting her daughter and grandchildren, and her other daughter in Norfolk. She was full of life, generous of heart, would do anything for anyone. We now have to find a way of living without her love and light and we would ask at this difficult time for some privacy as we try to come to terms with our loss."

Spanish police identified the alleged killer as Deyan Valentinov Deyanov, 28, an unemployed Bulgarian.

The attack began in a supermarket. Witnesses say the assailant grabbed a knife from inside a shop and stabbed the dead woman at least 14 times. He then decapitated her, carrying the severed head out into the street claiming to be "a prophet from God".

Local media reported that he left the supermarket shouting: "I am God's avenger and I come to mete out justice."

It was initially believed the murder was a random incident. But a report on a British expat website said that Mills-Westley had reported Deyanov to a guard at the town's social security office for threatening behaviour.

Deyanov ranted at the security guard and was moved on. Several minutes later Mills-Westley left the office and entered the supermarket, which was next door. Minutes later the attack took place and the same security guard, named locally as Juan Antonio Hernandez Delgado, heard the commotion and chased the killer down the street before wrestling him to the ground.

Further reports gave an impression of a disturbed individual. Locals said Deyanov had been known for threatening and often violent behaviour, once having punched a local shipowner who refused to tell him the time, smashing his teeth. Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, mayor of Arona, said video footage "showed the man became enraged" inside the store.

Christina Perez, a legal representative at a nearby court, said a group of lawyers had seen the man leave the shop. "They saw the man running out of the supermarket with the head in his hands. A security man from the complex ran after him and jumped on to him so he fell, and then he threw the head on to the road."

Mills-Westley's former employer, Norfolk county council, offered its condolences, praising her work teaching road safety to youngsters.

"Our deepest sympathies go to Jenny's family and friends following this terrible news," the authority said in a statement. "Jenny was a popular and well respected member of staff, who during her time with Norfolk county council worked as a road safety officer working with many schools and children to teach cycling safety training."

The Foreign Office has confirmed that consular officials are liaising with the authorities in Los Cristianos, which is home to a large British expat community.

Deyan Valentinov was reportedly released from a psychiatric hospital in February and had a history of violent behaviour before brutally killing the 62-year-old Briton in a shopping centre in Los Cristianos yesterday.
He was reportedly admitted to the psychiatric unit after knocking a stranger's teeth out on the street.

As Mayor Reverón said the incident was 'the most horrific crime to hit the resort in recent years', questions were raised about why Spanish authorities had allowed the attacker to wander the streets.

Attacking a random stranger and knocking TEETH (plural) out - is not the action of a man who is sane or harmless.

His latest action was nothing more than a step up for him, I'd bet my last £1 that if he'd not beheaded this poor woman, he'd have done something far worse than what he'd previously did.

If I was a member of that poor woman's family or a friend, I would have nothing but loathing for that man who carried out that crime. But looking at it from the perspective of a reader of that awful news item, the man was mentally ill and in need of strict supervision, not to be allowed on the streets where he was known to be a pest, a ticking timebomb waiting for that fuse to be lit, he was probably not even taking any prescribed meds for all we know. He wasn't an evil calculating killer as far as we know, he is mentally ill, the blame for what happened should for the most part lay with the authorities that saw fit to release him into society again and the laws themselves which need tightening up. The tragedy should never have happened in the first place :(
