Warning:
The following is a list of 100 albums compiled in a highly erratic and inconsistent fashion. All albums featured have been because I happen to be rather fond of them. I would not say these are the 100 greatest albums of all time, because that would be foolish.

Those of a nervous pop disposition should look away, since the poppiest this gets is a Madonna album around the #80 mark.

Compiling your own list will be incredibly painful, difficult and ultimately pointless.

The first ten to come once I've decided to cease praying to Allah for forgiveness.

100. "Begin to Hope", Regina Spektor
http://images.artistdirect.com/Images/artd/amg/music/cover/3630355_rsalbum_200.jpg
The first on the list - I've included this on the merit of a handful of fantastic songs. There's "Fidelity", surely a candidate for the chirpiest song of the past decade. There's "Better", which features The Strokes' Nick Valensi on guitar. But it's mostly here because of "Samson" - without a doubt one of the most beautifully sad songs of all time.

99. "Eyes Open", Snow Patrol
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ks_RsY0-8LI/RYrt-vcUeNI/AAAAAAAAACM/IjOWkFnIN_k/s320/eyes+open.jpg
Okay, I lose a wallop of credibility here but I'm not particularly bothered. Again, this is essentially a favourite off the back of about 5/6 songs I love. You're all familiar with the obvious (Open Your Eyes, Chasing Cars) but my favourite tracks are "Make This Go On Forever", a slowly-building belter that, at just under 6 minutes, isn't long enough - and "Set the Fire to the Third Bar", quite easily the stand-out track thanks to Martha Wainwright's guest appearance.

98. "American Pie", Don McLean
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_tNivN70scSM/SOrTPlNnlgI/AAAAAAAAAZM/0igrfTHrK34/s200/american-pie-by-don-mclean.jpg
Mostly famed for the title track, which is of course an all-time classic, but contains many other great tracks. "Vincent" is a touching tribute to Vincent Van Gogh ("You took your life as lovers often do; But I could have told you, Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.") My favourite track is probably "Empty Chairs" though, a bleak interpretation of a breakup:

"And the fragrance of your flowers rest beneath my head
A sympathy bouquet left with the love that's dead"

97. "It's Not Me, It's You", Lily Allen
http://www.punknews.org/images/covers/lily-allen-its-not-me-its-you.jpg
I feel a little bit sick putting this above lyrics like that but alas, I generally prefer this record. Aside from the single "Not Fair", which I view as an irritating splurge of crude lyrics, I find it packed with witty lyrics, strong pop songs and a nice representation of what I consider to be adolescent whining. She's often portrayed as a bratty attention-seeker but when she turns to romantic tracks like "Chinese" or self-motivation such as "I Could Say", she's actually got a bit of substance. LOL HATERS GONNA HATE GREG xo

96. "Gorgeous George", Edwyn Collins
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc400/c480/c4808091312.jpg
I hadn't even heard of his music outside of "A Girl Like You" until last year - the track he's most famous for courtesy of a stupidly groovy tune - but this album took me by surprise. "Low Expectations" is a favourite - which is refreshingly disposed against the typical "THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER" belters - and other typically blunt lyrics (a highlight on "North of Heaven" being: "Some mothers talking about Guns N Roses / Like I give a ****, at best I think they suck"). "This music won't take you higher unless you're a moron".

95. "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", Kanye West
http://www.hiphopmusicdotcom.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Kanye-West-My-Beautiful-Dark-Twisted-Fantasy-200x200.jpg
It's only been out for less than a year so I could never put it particularly high - I might tire of it in a couple of years. However, the unique kind of self-flagellation, ego-bashing and theatricality behind some of these songs is genius - the audacity to sample King Crimson on "POWER", the extravagance in performance of "All of the Lights", but most of all the willingness to admit he's occasionally in the wrong ("Runaway").

94. "Back to Black", Amy Winehouse
http://www.electraradio.com/~pochettes/200/amy%20winehouse%20-%20back%20to%20black.jpg
Well once you've had your face photoshopped onto a record you have to include it in such lists, don't you? Many favour the debut, Frank, and I can see why - because this one's so in your face and with as much subtlety as a sledgehammer - but I feel this was more consistent.

93. "The Beatles (The White Album)", The Beatles
http://al-tereg.planetaclix.pt/images/369f.jpg
Stupidly inconsistent, daringly long, a sign of self-indulgence and lack of direction, a mishmash of conflicting personalities, evidence of decline and feuding - but in amongst all the chaos there's tracks such as "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Sexy Sadie", "Blackbird" and "Dear Prudence". More than enough to forgive "The Continuing Story Of Bungalow".

92. "Exodus", Bob Marley and the Wailers
http://i43.tower.com/images/mm106274943/exodus-bob-marley-wailers-cd-cover-art.jpg
Mostly for Side Two - Jamming, One Love, Waiting In Vain, Three Little Birds - and because everyone loves a bit of Bob.

91. "Loaded", The Velvet Underground
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RPUuM-53Qtc/RfWQ1AXQ3PI/AAAAAAAACG4/lofuwg_LaAs/s200/Loaded.jpg
Most would of course pick the debut ("Velvet Underground & Nico") or the self-titled one a couple of years later, but I'm not particularly fond of either. I know it led to Lou Reed leaving, because of its radio-friendly nature, but if that hadn't happened we wouldn't have gotten 'Transformer' (oddly I haven't put Transformer on the list but still). "Sweet Jane" is my favourite track.

I'm afraid so - but yeah same. I own Ray of Light on CD too and it's probably my second favourite, but I've tried to keep down on the multiple entries (only 8 or so artists have more than one)

Shaun

80. "The Great Escape", Blur
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc400/c457/c45706btb3a.jpg
I personally didn't really enjoy Parklife because that bloke who went on to do Eastenders' voice slightly irritates me - and this album sort of ditched all of the cockney stuff in favour of indulgent tracks like The Universal, Country House or Charmless Man. Also find the Ken Livingstone appearance on "Ernold Same" amusing.

79. "Dog Man Star", Suede
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6s1DT0046iQ/TbYj5F-NCZI/AAAAAAAAADI/Kcnhg6i3n3E/s200/Suede-Dog-Man-Star-276108.jpg
Melodramatic, inspired by Bowie, traces of Britpop, references to James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, a vocal performance as gorgeous as "The Wild Ones"; it's aspiration in a record (and indeed a title).

78. "The La's", The La's
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf600/f657/f65729o6mny.jpg
Their only studio album, the Liverpool band are the go-to inspiration for the likes of Oasis, The Libertines and virtually anyone who's tried to copy them. There's obviously "There She Goes" which doesn't need explaining - but "Timeless Melody", "Doledrum" and "Feelin'" put across very strong impressions that they were a band that could (ably) span multiple eras.

77. "In Utero", Nirvana
http://covers.mp3panda.com/11/110205/alb_1039339_big.jpg
Oooh Shaun, you're so subversive, picking this one and not Nevermind. WELL NEVERMIND DOESN'T HAVE A SONG CALLED "RAPE ME", SO IT WAS NEVER GOING TO WIN.

76. "Dusty In Memphis", Dusty Springfield
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jJAG_tiB6jQ/SVC7s9YqTnI/AAAAAAAABBY/dD3xPvsLVLs/s200/Gay+albums_Dusty.jpg
It's hardly surprising that the URL for the picture of this is taken from a list of 'Gay albums'. You can argue that she's not an artist, since none of the tracks were written by her, but if you give a woman as uniquely talented as her songs crafted by the likes of Carole King, Randy Newman and Burt Bacharach you're bound for success. Favourites are "Son of A Preacher Man", "The Windmills of Your Mind" and "In the Land of Make Believe".

75. "Is This It?", The Strokes
http://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/20356.gif
Often cited as one of the best, and most important, records of the 2000s, this personally isn't my favourite album of the band - but it's undeniably brilliant. I'm undecided as to which tracks are favourites because they're simultaneously so diverse and so similar, but I'll provisionally say "Hard to Explain" (the first track of theirs I heard... embarrassingly because of a mashup with 'Genie in a Bottle'), "Soma" and "Take It Or Leave It". I'd also be lying if I didn't mention "Someday" because that song will forever prompt endless gleeful smiles on my face.

74. "Blue Lines", Massive Attack
http://www.tonspion.de/system/files/images/alben_7D/376138.jpg
Those who were here in 2007/8 will remember when I was firmly lodged up the trip-hop outfit's collective arse - and I am indeed still a fan (they've just been (rightly) overtaken by a great number of artists). The obvious source of meditative joy is "Unfinished Sympathy", but I've also a massive soft spot for "Safe From Harm" and "Five Man Army".

73. "Pearl", Janis Joplin
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w308/seberly1/zap_janis4.jpg
Because I'm scared if I don't include her, her spirit will rise and screech at me like only she could. "Me and Bobby McGee" is a force to be reckoned with.

72. "Beggars Banquet", The Rolling Stones
http://www.mclub.com.ua/images/alb/cover499_150520.jpg
Obviously having "Street Fighting Man" and "Sympathy for the Devil" is reason enough - but I'll lie and say I think "No Expectations" and "Salt of the Earth" are really amazing and the only two reasons I picked it.

71. "Abbey Road", The Beatles
http://heavyriff.com/wp-admin/images/AbbeyRoad.jpg
OMFG SHAUN WHY IS THIS SO LOW, Karl screams, as he tears off his bollocks and hurls them at me. WELL KARL, I retaliate, because some of the tracks, like "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "Polythene Pam", are just bloody absurd. So yeah. In its defence, however, it made the list, and has beautuabtuautbautuabutuueueutuful tracks like "Something", "Here Comes the Sun" (ohay George Harrison my favourite) and I really love "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Even Ringo managed a good'un! (Octopus' Garden).

70. "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs", Derek and the Dominos
http://musictap.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/DerekDominoesLayla.jpg
Yeees there's obviously "Layla", but my personal favourite from the album is "Keep On Growing". Also very fond of "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" and "Bell Bottom Blues" - they're probably my second favourite band to turn to if I want sexy guitars.

69. "Bringing It All Back Home", Bob Dylan
http://www.music-lyrics-chord.com/cover/Bob_Dylan_Bringing_It_All_Back_Home.jpg
The only thing holding me back from picking loads of Dylan is how ****ing ugly his artwork is. Thankfully songs like "Gates of Eden", "Subterannean Homesick Blues" and "On the Road Again" aren't ugly. Oh and I love the false-start on "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" where he suddenly bursts into laughter.

68. "Sound Affects", The Jam
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c3/The_Jam_-_Sound_Effects.jpg
Most might pick All Mod Cons, but with "That's Entertainment!" (my personal favourite of the band) and some grittier tracks than their usual city-warfare ("Set the House Ablaze", "Boy About Town") I think this is easily my favourite album of theirs.

67. "Live at the Apollo", James Brown
http://img-cdn.officialmp3s.mobi/art/2550-187-200/james-brown-introduction-by-fats-gonder-opening-fanfare-live-1962the-apollo.jpg
I generally don't collect live albums because I find the sound of audiences that I'm not a part of a little too envy-inducing. They don't come much shriller than the screams at the start of "Lost Someone" but for me it kind of reinforces what made him so great - the ability to reduce a stage to rubble just with dancing and vocals.

66. "Cheap Thrills", Big Brother and the Holding Company
http://img.mp3mixx.com/images/covers/21/216024/alb_1523046_big.jpg
Well it has Janis, it has "Piece of my Heart", it has a ludicrously great cover of "Summertime" and is generally a lovely blend of psychedelia, excellent vocals and mellow rhythms.

65. "Urban Hymns", The Verve
http://www.mp3crank.com/cover-album/The-Verve-Urban-Hymns.jpg
Just for 'The Drugs Don't Work' really. Also love 'Lucky Man' a lot.

64. "Please Please Me", The Beatles
http://assets.rollingstone.com/assets/images/amg/c528765mjru.jpg
I think this is their most overlooked record. For a debut at the start of the 60s it's so corroborative with what we now come to expect from a modern record: cohesive sounds, great songwriting and something fresh. "Anna (Go to Him)", "Misery" and "Baby It's You" are my favourite tracks - but I've literally put every track on 5 stars.

63. "Music for the Masses", Depeche Mode
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rRA0caxvFek/TbS8Pk9HKFI/AAAAAAAACOc/Z2tA8AazaCQ/s260/depeche-mode-music-for-the-masses-1987_178.jpg
I still don't know much about the band at all, and only own two albums, but this one's excellent from start to finish. There's something hypnotic about the opener ("Never Let Me Down Again") that lures you in with the primary rhythm and then bashes you on the head with about 50 different instruments in a kaleidoscopic fashion. Favourite tracks are "Pimpf", "To Have and to Hold" and "Strangelove".

62. "Strangeways, Here We Come", The Smiths
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/37/Smiths_-_Strangeways_here_we_come.jpg/200px-Smiths_-_Strangeways_here_we_come.jpg
Their last (4th) album and by most not really held up in the same light as Meat is Murder or The Queen is Dead - but I found this one more terrifying than both. Whether that's with the screaming riots at the start of "Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me" or the oddly jaunty "Girlfriend in a Coma".

61. "Two Suns", Bat For Lashes
http://recklessandfamous.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/200px-bat_for_lashes_two_suns.jpg
In short, the best Bush since Bush. Björk is in an entirely different league, Tori Amos was just ****ing dull, Florence + the Machine too poppy. This album earnestly hones in on the kind of theatricality and mysticism that made Kate a phenomenon - but it's also entirely unique. Her voice is less shrill, more silky, especially on 'Travelling Woman' - and my favourite song of hers (and one of my favourites of the past 10 years) - 'Moon and Moon'.

Stu
23-05-2011, 06:30 PM
I like every single album there.

Have to say it was a pleasant surprise it wasn't Violator. NLMDA is beyond epic live.

Edit : And yes, Girlfriend In A Coma is so oddly uplifting, right?

60. "Origin of Symmetry", Muse
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KmFBesw2Zx8/SfAcYQIUmBI/AAAAAAAAD1I/f-okznhth_s/s200/muse-origin_of_symmetry.jpg
I think Muse were the first band really that I stumbled upon and spawned a love for rock music - Absolution at the time - and since then I've really become attached to this album the most. The obvious hit from the album was their cover of 'Feeling Good', which I've become bored of. My personal favourites are 'New Born', 'Bliss' and 'Plug In Baby'.

59. "Silent Alarm", Bloc Party
http://i43.tower.com/images/mm105907228/silent-alarm-bloc-party-vinyl-cover-art.jpg
Two albums from the noughties in a row! Oooo!
Um.
Basically, Kele Okereke, stop dicking around with keyboards and do something as good as this again, yeah?

58. "There's a Riot Goin' On!", Sly & the Family Stone
http://www.jukepod.fr/pochette/sly-and-the-family-stone-theres-a-riot-goin-on.jpg
Scary, powerful, political, funky, uncomfortable, weird, amazing. I love Sly's voice.

57. "Daydream Nation", Sonic Youth
http://medias.fluctuat.net/albums-covers/6/6/0/album200-3066.jpg
I really don't like the album sleeve at all. But then, until this year I really didn't like the album at all, so what's my two cents worth? (two cents...surely...)
I DIGRESS
I was basically listening to this the other week and it finally struck me. Kim

56. "Abraxas", Santana
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_aRIdDrwDIgs/SYoRdd6US8I/AAAAAAAACBY/vPk-V9OCO1Q/s320/santana_abraxas+%28Custom%29.jpg
OYE COMO VA MI RITMO, BUENO PA GOSAR MULATA.

55. "Post", Björk
http://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/39762.gif
Again, I never "got" her until recently (although I loved Volta upon its release - I just forgot about it). I genuinely think her mind should be examined for portals to other dimensions.

54. "Songs in the Key of Life", Stevie Wonder
http://www.rankapple.com/_templates/_images/images/AlbumGraphics/StevieWonderSongsInTheKeyOfLife.jpg
I want to marry this man. How can you be that talented and only have 3 and a half senses?

53. "Low", David Bowie
http://streetlegalplay.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/david-bowie-low.jpg
Whilst blue, blue, electric blue isn't the colour of the room where I currently live, the amount I can thoroughly immerse myself in 'Sound and Vision' is ludicrous. Also love 'Be My Wife', 'Speed of Life' and 'Warszawa'.

52. "Exile On Main Street", The Rolling Stones
http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/exileonmainst200.jpg
UOBFAUOBAOUBGUOABFAOUB. My interpretation of the album. Supposed to be positive. All Down The Line <3

51. "Led Zeppelin", Led Zeppelin
http://www.destination-rock.com/rockint/images/ledzep1.jpg

50. "Harvest", Neil Young
http://recordgeekheaven.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/200px-after_the_gold_rush.jpg
I initially found his voice a bit silly (not quite falsetto, just...whiny) but the songwriting is faultless - particularly "Don't Let It Bring You Down" (which was featured on the American Beauty soundtrack) and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" (which I first found through a Saint Etienne cover).

49. "Strange Days", The Doors
http://www.slantmagazine.com/images/music/strangedays.jpg
Just 'People Are Strange' is enough really. I haven't been able to immerse myself in another whole album of theirs like this one - the lyrics are weird, the tunes something out of Quentin Tarantino's mind and the album sleeve is also rather cool. Favourite songs = the aforementioned, 'You're Lost Little Girl', 'My Eyes Have Seen You' and 'Strange Days'.

48. "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?", Oasis
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zEJKsuet7RA/R64JMCVLRRI/AAAAAAAAAcQ/TvQq6v9dmOE/s200/Oasis---%28What%27s-The-Story%29-Morning-Glory.jpg
dno if u no abt this album rly guess its a bit of a risk pickin it lol

47. "Electric Warrior", T.Rex
http://i43.tower.com/images/mm106447409/electric-warrior-marc-bolan-t-rex-cd-cover-art.jpg
I like glam rock. This one is also a bit classically inspired - tracks like 'Monolith' and 'Mambo Sun' borrowing a lot from soul music and still bashing out tracks like 'Get It On'.

46. "A Rush of Blood to the Head", Coldplay
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5cbxG1xt9t0/TGw1rn370XI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/SEgFnSRltSw/s320/coldplay.jpg
Well firstly there's their best singles - In My Place, The Scientist, Clocks, God Put A Smile On Your Face - but it's tracks like 'Politik' and 'Warning Sign' that really thrusts this album in my face - these two proving there's more to them than soppy bedwetting rock like Fix You. ****ING GET OVER IT, STU.

45. "Parallel Lines", Blondie
http://www.bestmp3albums.com/covers/200/Blondie_-_Parallel_Lines.jpg
mmm Debbie Harry.

44. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", Elton John
http://www.eltonography.com/albums/pix/goodbye_yellow_brick_road.jpg
Back when he had his head up other peoples' arses rather than his own, he was actually able to write good songs. This album goes on a little bit too long in my opinion but the likes of 'Saturday Night's Alright' help keep it fresh.

43. "Space Oddity", David Bowie
http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/spaceoddity200.jpg
I think people overlook the album and just think "oh that Ground Control to Major Tom song, that was good". I know Ricky Gervais cites his favourite song as 'Letter to Hermione' from this album and I can sort-of see why... the album's poetic, romantic, optimistic and symphonic in its execution.

42. "Electric Ladyland", The Jimi Hendrix Experience
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc700/c779/c77953wcp15.jpg
Mostly because of stand-out tracks - I've put another album higher than this - but aside from the obvious (Crosstown Traffic, Voodoo Chile, All Along the Watchtower) I really love 'Gypsy Eyes'.

41. "Pet Sounds", The Beach Boys
http://photo.sing365.com/music/picture.nsf/Beach-Boys-Pet-Sounds-Cover/48256C71003578A2482569850001EEF4/$file/Pet+Sounds.jpg

http://www.sinbajar.com.ar/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/radiohead-ok-computer-1997-200x200.jpg
*sobs* I'm sorry for anything I said, when I was younger and foolish, about Radiohead being "boring", "****" or "crap". They're actually rather amazing.

39. "Favourite Worst Nightmare", Arctic Monkeys
http://futuremusiccharts.web-log.nl/futuremusiccharts/images/albumhoes_arctic_monkeys_favourite_worst.jpg
yesyesyes it's nowhere near as good as OK Computer but I've known it longer (I'm not sure how that works either). This record can make me pumped (Brianstorm), sing along like a twat (Fluorescent Adolescent), mellow (Only Ones Who Know) and sexy (505). I also think 'If You Were There, Beware' is underrated.

38. "Thriller", Michael Jackson
http://sites.google.com/site/culturebrats/home/thriller.jpg
Because 'Human Nature' has an almost religious impact on me. + there's a couple of other good'uns lol x

37. "Highway 61 Revisited", Bob Dylan
http://www.rousefamily.com/Highway61Revisited1965.jpg
Ballad of a Thin Man, Tombstone Blues, Like A Rolling Stone, Bob looking sexy on the cover. SECOND FAVOURITE ALERT.

36. "The Queen Is Dead", The Smiths

Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people
And I want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their home
And I'm welcome no more

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well the pleasure, the privilege is mine

35. "Imagine", John Lennon

Had to remove this image Shaun it was causing a virus warning
I haven't actually seen the film... but every single track on the album is phenomenally catchy. Oh and he's sexy. I don't care what you say, he's sexy.

29. "London Calling", The Clash
http://images.wikia.com/lyricwiki/images/f/f7/The_Clash_-_London_Calling.jpg
Have to be in a pretty odd mood to want to listen to them really, since they're a bit tame by today's standards if I fancy a thrashing (in which case I just phone LemonJam)... but 'Train in Vain' is enough to placate me in any mood.

28. "Room On Fire", The Strokes
http://photo.sing365.com/music/picture.nsf/The-Strokes-Room-on-Fire-Cover/0A8E5C157963EFF948256DCD00060093/$file/Room.jpg
Reptilia is amazing... so are What Ever Happened?, 12:51 and I Can't Win... I'm besotted with the drummer... I have a friend on Tumblr stalking this list and we share glee in them.

27. "I Am A Bird Now", Antony and the Johnsons
http://geordierussell.instone.net/Jukebox/Img/A/Antony-I_Am_a_Bird_Now.jpg
His voice should get a National Heritage status... this album is just stupidly moving and pretty. 'Hope There's Someone', 'You Are My Sister' and 'Fistful of Love' are my favourite three songs but I love it from start to finish.

26. "Definitely Maybe", Oasis
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d4/OasisDefinitelyMaybealbumcover.jpg
Because whilst What's the Story? might have had more in the way of karaoke hits this is just packed to the brim with "I am going to put on sunglasses and flick you the Vs" tunes. Supersonic <3

25. "Revolver", The Beatles
http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/revolver.jpg
Widely regarded as the best album of all time, and I have given every track 5 stars, I've decided to cut this from the rest because I'm really controversial and stuff xxx (but really just because I prefer to listen to the others).

24. "Hounds of Love", Kate Bush
http://alternativeclassix.blogs.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/09/07/kate_bush.jpg
(it's in the trees! it's coming!) WHEN I WAS A CHILD RUNNING IN THE NIGHT AFRAID OF WHAT MIGHT BE. HIDING IN THE DARK, HIDING IN THE STREET, AND OF WHAT WAS FOLLOWING ME.

literally every line in that song is made to be sung with triumph. She is a goddess.

23. "Unknown Pleasures", Joy Division
http://www.mp3lyrics.org/j/joy-division/unknown-pleasures_2x2.jpg
a bit of a comedown after that song but oh well. *slouches and grumbles and shifts from side to side in an imaginary indie club*

22. "Kala", M.I.A.

21. "Blue", Joni Mitchell
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e1/Bluealbumcover.jpg
Might not be advisable to listen to all of these in the order I've put them, really, you'd soon be diagnosed as bipolar. There's a scene in last year's The Kids Are All Right where Annette Bening sings a large chunk of 'All I Want'. It's that good. And then there's 'A Case of You', 'River', 'California', 'Blue'...

20. "Plastic Ono Band", John Lennon
http://www.oocities.org/dr_boogie/images/plastic.jpg
Obviously Imagine his most famous record but I think this is the most solid... I generally love all of his albums (except the rock and roll one :/) but this one has 'Mother', 'Isolation', 'God' and I think the last track is absolutely mortifyingly sad ('My Mummy's Dead').

19. "Innervisions", Stevie Wonder
http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre300/e394/e39431qknyi.jpg
Mostly because of 'Living for the City'... I just love the bass on that. Also love 'Higher Ground', 'He's Misstra Know It All' and 'Don't You Worry About A Thing'. My grin watching him rock Glastonbury (I wasn't there :p) was as big as his always is.

18. "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme", Simon and Garfunkel
http://i43.tower.com/images/mm106693618/parsley-sage-rosemary-thyme-simon-garfunkel-cd-cover-art.jpg
Listen to '7 O'Clock News/Silent Night'... whilst they were flawless with recording harmonies and pop songs, they were also brilliant at penning simple but powerful political ideas: singing Silent Night in the background of a harrowing news bulletin (featuring details on Vietnam, peace protests, Nixon, drug overdoses, civil rights marches and mass-murder) just sends shivers down my spine.

17. "The Boatman's Call", Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
http://www.lyrics.as/images/album/thumb/The_Boatmans_Call16374.jpg
From the political to the romantic... I can't put into words how succinct and poignant the track 'Into My Arms' is. The whole album is very bitter and depressing but it feels like you've lived a whole life afterwards.

16. "Funeral", Arcade Fire
http://quartofechado.weblog.com.pt/discos/arcade_fire_funeral.jpg
Few can pull off a debut album with four tracks with the same title. But theirs was just amazing. Aside from 3 of the Neighborhoods (#4, Kettles isn't so good I feel) my favourites would be 'Rebellion (Lies)', 'Wake Up' and 'Haïti'.

15. "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", Bob Dylan

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TyQu3p_vvLY/SjQWZfwq7SI/AAAAAAAADKs/WLQ7DUpxH-s/s200/JimiHendrix67AxisBoldAsLove+up.jpg
I think this is the most psychedelic album. And therefore, naturally, the best. I can genuinely see myself in 30 years time doing a Lester Burnham with this stuff.

13. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", The Beatles
http://cdn.pitchfork.com/media/sgtpeppers.jpg
Again I've given every track 5 stars whereas I haven't with all of the top ten LOL but oh well... I think sometimes the sheer wackiness of this album can be its own downfall. That said, it has 'A Day in the Life', 'Getting Better' and the lovely 'She's Leaving Home'. Oh and Lucy.

12. "Disintegration", The Cure
http://images.artistdirect.com/Images/Sources/AMGCOVERS/music/cover200/drd600/d684/d68462a7451.jpg

I know this is realistically nowhere near the top 10 (or the top 100) of the best albums of all time, but I've grown up with this and am continually finding new favourites and surprises in the record. Aside from the singles, which I think are some of the best of their career (Bones, Read My Mind, When You Were Young) there's 'Bling' which I find rather glorious along a bumpy road, and 'Why Do I Keep Counting?' which doesn't particularly make sense BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO, IT'S EPIC. END OF DISCUSSION. -is releasing pent-up anger over Pitchfork's 5.5 review of this-

Disintegration above Sgt. Peppers? HA! UP YOURS AGAIN CONVENTIONAL THINKING!

One of my favourite albums ever. I don't know would I agree that they are poor at making consistent albums. I think they just have so many. But off the top of my head Pornography, Head On The Door, Wish, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Bloodflowers were all really good.

Their like Pink Floyd. Such a massive catalogue is bound to give out some stinkers. Unless you have Lennon and McCarthney in the same band. Or you're Depeche Mode from 1984 on.

Great albums in that list though.

I don't really want to talk too much about this record because it's a bit of a personal affair since they were my dad's favourite band and I've sort of correlated how much I miss him with the title track... but that aside I love the richness that only they really dared to aim for.

Okay. Having 'Life On Mars?' is really enough to cement it in the top 10. But I've picked this top, and have said it's my favourite album for a fairly long time now, because of how cross-generational the songwriting is. There's childish honky-tonk happy-go-lucky piano tunes like 'Changes' and 'Queen Bitch', there's overblown and slightly nonsense extravagance in 'Life On Mars?' and 'Eight Line Poem'... but two of my favourite tracks from it are the precautionary ones, 'Oh! You Pretty Things' and the tribute to his first son, 'Kooks', which is just deliriously happy with pride, humour and father-to-son messages. It's by no means his most important or defining record but it's just packed with infectious, bouncy, chirpy tunes. And that is the end of my list.
